Accident at work with fertilizer distributors in Austrian agriculture CIGR Journal
Kogler, Robert; Quendler, Elisabeth; Boxberger, Josef.
Accidents with fertilizer distributors at work happen in the Austrian agriculture every year.  In accordance with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the standards ISO 4254-1 and DIN EN 14017, fertilizer distributors undergo a risk assessment before construction and market entry to ensure their complying with these legal recommendations and to eliminate largely the risk of injury for the operators.  To determine the accident scenarios, causes, and technical solutions, a narrative analysis of 14 reports of accidents that led to moderate and serious injuries from 2008 to 2010 was done, eight victims interviewed, and seven accident machines and eight new ones, which were sold in 2013, evaluated according to applicable regulations.  Mostly farm managers were...

Some factors that may affect the physical-chemical properties of blueberries CIGR Journal
Guiné, Raquel P.F.; Gonçalves, Christophe; Gonçalves, Fernando; Costa, Daniela.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different production and conservation factors on some properties of blueberries. Among the production factors considered were cultivar (Duke, Bluecrop and Ozarkblue) and production mode (organic or conventional). Regarding the conservation factors were evaluated temperature (ambient or refrigeration) and storage time (0, 7 and 14 days). The properties under study belong to three categories: physical properties (color and texture); chemical properties (moisture content, sugars and acidity) and phenolic and antioxidant properties (total phenols, anthocyanins, tannins, ABTS antioxidant activity, DPPH antioxidant activity). The results revealed that moisture content was only influenced by cultivar...

Use of the correlation coefficient in agricultural sciences: problems, pitfalls and how to deal with them Anais da ABC (AABC)
Kozak,Marcin; Krzanowski,Wojtek; Tartanus,MaŁgorzata.
This paper discusses a number of aspects concerning the analysis, interpretation and reporting of correlations in agricultural sciences. Various problems that one might encounter with these aspects are identified, and suggestions of how to overcome these problems are proposed. Some of the examples presented show how mistaken and even misleading the interpretation of correlation can be when one ignores simple rules of analysis.

Epidemiological aspects of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in older Brazilians: a comparative approach BJID
Carvalho,Luiz Max Fagundes de; Câmara,Fernando Portela.
OBJECTIVES: To compare epidemiological aspects of young (15 to 49 years old) and older (more than 50 years old) AIDS patients. METHODS: We analyzed 511,633 AIDS cases notified to the Brazilian Ministry of Health in the period of 1980-2008 looking at sex, age ranges, educational level and exposure category. Patients were divided into three age groups: under 15, from 15 to 49 and over 50 years old. Using a comparative approach, we analyzed data with regard to category of exposure, education (expressed in years of schooling), and sex ratio among younger (15-49) and older adults (over 50 years old). Time series data were log-transformed and normalized, and the temporal trend was evaluated. RESULTS: AIDS incidence is increasing among people over 50 years old in...
