Abreu,Raimunda; Ronchi-Teles,Beatriz; Monné,Miguel; Vianez,Basílio.
The occurrence of Cerambycidae (Lamiinae) was evaluated in trunk and branch samples of cardeiro (Scleronema micranthum), a forest species from the Central Amazon. Samples were exposed to biodegradation for 24 months on the forest soil, during which adults and larvae were collected and their attack was evaluated. From a total of 643 cerambycids collected, 606 were immatures and 37 were adults. Two species of Acanthoderini, Psapharochrus longispinis (Bates) (17 specimens) and Steirastoma melanogenys White (17 specimens) were collected, as well as one species of Onciderini, Jamesia globifera (Fabricius) (three specimens). Most larvae were found in the bark of trunks and branches, while pupae and adults were mainly found in the sapwood.

Surveying neotropical social wasps: an evaluation of methods in the "Ferreira Penna" research station (ECFPn), in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil (Hym., Vespidae, Polistinae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Silveira,Orlando Tobias.
A survey of social wasps was made in the area of the "Ferreira Penna" Research Station (ECFPn) in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil. Traditional collecting methods as the use of Malaise traps and the search for individuals and colonies of wasps along trails in the forest and by river margins, were applied in a more systematized fashion. Seventy-nine species belonging to 18 genera were discovered within a discontinuous period of 52 days of collecting. Angiopolybia pallens, Polybia liliacea, and several Agelaia species were the most frequently collected species. Active search for wasps in the forest and by river margins was far more efficient than Malaise traps regarding the discovery of polistine species.

First standardized inventory of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the natural grasslands of Paraná: New records for Southern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Franco,Weslly; Feitosa,Rodrigo Machado.
Abstract Despite the large number of studies investigating ant diversity in Brazilian biomes, no ant-related studies have been carried out in Campos Gerais, a grassland physiognomy in Paraná state. The present study is the first inventory of the ant fauna in one of the few conservation units protecting the Campos Gerais landscape, the Guartelá State Park (PEG). Sixty samples were collected from different habitats within PEG using pitfall traps. Qualitative samples of leaf litter were collected from forest fragments and submitted to Winkler extractors. In addition, manual qualitative sampling was carried out in the various physiognomies within the PEG. A total of 163 species was collected and sorted into 43 genera and nine subfamilies. Five genera and 28...

Evaluation of Fenoxaprop-P-Ethyl Resistant Littleseed Canarygrass (Phalaris minor) in Pakistan Planta Daninha
ABBAS,T.; NADEEM,M.A.; TANVEER,A.; AHMAD,R..
ABSTRACT To test resistance status of Phalaris minor (littleseed canary grass) to fenoxaprop-P-ethyl in Pakistan, a field survey was conducted during 2014. Uncontrolled P. minor plants were selected for seed collection from wheat fields where fenoxaprop-P-ethyl was used to control P. minor. Seeds were collected from eight different locations near Fasialabad, Pakistan. Susceptible plants were also selected near Faisalabad having no history of fenoxaprop-P-ethyluse for comparison. These seeds were grown in pots for resistance confirmation using completely randomized design with factorial arrangement having four replicates. Four doses of fenoxaprop-P-ethylcontrol (0X), 46.9 (0.5X), 93.7 (1X) and 187 (2X) g a.i. ha-1 were sprayed at 3 to 4 leaf stage of P....

A Choice Modelling Survey of Community Attitudes to Improvements in Environmental Quality in NSW Catchments AgEcon
Mazur, Kasia; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
The survey was designed to estimate environmental values suitable for integration into MOSAIC, a bio-economic model for catchment and farm level planning. Local residents, as well as distant rural and distant urban communities, were surveyed in three NSW catchments (Lachlan, Namoi and Hawkesbury-Nepean) using choice modelling (CM). The survey aimed to find out respondents’ attitudes about, and preferences for, potential natural resource management (NRM) improvements. In total, 3,997 responses were collected from seven different locations in NSW. Fourteen split samples were established to allow for testing of incentive compatibility in CM, the impact of respondent location on values held, and scale effects. This research report describes the development...

Examining the Costs of Producing Processing Snap Beans and Green Peas in New York State AgEcon
Ho, Shuay-Tsyr; Rickard, Bradley J.; Kikkert, Julie; Klotzbach, Kathryn; Reiners, Stephen; Smith, Marc.
It has been a long time since we have seen a cost of production study for horticultural crops, notably processing vegetable crops, in New York State; however, research in this arena is completed in many other states and continues to offer useful information to industry stakeholders. This type of information is especially important in the processing vegetable sector in New York State as it has seen substantial acreage decreases in recent years. Here we develop a survey to collect data from processing vegetable growers in New York State and use it to calculate costs and net returns of producing snap beans and green peas. Our results indicate that the average cost of producing snap beans in New York State is $568 per acre and is $563 per acre for green peas;...

Vulnerability to risk among small farmers in Tajikistan: results of a 2011 survey AgEcon
Lerman, Zvi; Wolfgramm, Bettina.
Tajikistan is judged to be highly vulnerable to risk, including food insecurity risks and climate change risks. By some vulnerability measures it is the most vulnerable among all 28 countries in the World Bank’s Europe and Central Asia Region – ECA (World Bank 2009). The rural population, with its relatively high incidence of poverty, is particularly vulnerable. The Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) in Tajikistan (2011) provided an opportunity to conduct a farm-level survey with the objective of assessing various dimensions of rural population’s vulnerability to risk and their perception of constraints to farming operations and livelihoods. The survey should be accordingly referred to as the 2011 PPCR survey. The rural population in Tajikistan is...

THE EUROPEAN IDENTITY AND CITIZENSHIP OF THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN GÖDÖLLŐ AgEcon
Farkas, Tibor; Kolta, Dora.
The process of globalization already affects all the European countries. Its positive and negative consequences are challenging governments and peoples, too. One of the possible answer for the members of society is the strengthening their status as citizen. This paper will examine what are the differences in national identity, culture, attitudes among different countries in Europe and will analyze how it is possible to create the "public" in different countries. That is to develop civil initiatives and movements and to exert a great effort so that the citizens “opinion” has a real influence on the social life. There is an important role of the education, because its task is to raise a successful young generation which will gain good knowledge and its...

Estimating Demand Elasticities for a Small Island Economy: Fiji AgEcon
Hone, Phillip; Haszler, Henry; Tubuna, Sakiusa; Waqavonovono, Epeli.
An understanding of the responsiveness of food demand to price changes is critical to decision making in the area of food policy. The estimation of these elasticities is difficult in developing countries, such as Fiji, due to a lack of reliable data. We review the existing data on food demand elasticities in Fiji and examine alternative approaches to their estimation given the data constraints present. We use a stated preference approach to provide a new set of estimates of food demand elasticities for Fiji using cross section data.

In the last few decades the number of civilization diseases has surged and mortality rate caused by them has been responsible for most deaths for a long time. Researches found out that it is the new way of life of people that is responsible for it. Study outlines the reasons for the development of health-protective foods, then it makes the notion of functional foods and the market facts that hinder their spread clear. Authors analyse the basic model of nutrimarketing and they outline the consequent business and collective marketing tasks. Supporting it we launched a representative survey with 402 people to test the consumers’ judgement. For all the consumers clear and chemical free features came to the first place. 4.66 value on a 1-5 scale proves that...

CONSUMER FOOD SAFETY BEHAVIOR: A CASE STUDY IN HAMBURGER COOKING AND ORDERING AgEcon
Starke, Yolanda; Ralston, Katherine L.; Brent, C. Philip; Riggins, Toija; Lin, Chung-Tung Jordan.
More Americans are eating hamburgers more well-done than in the past, according to national surveys. This change reduced the risk of E. coli O157:H7 infection by an estimated 4.6 percent and reduced associated medical costs and productivity losses by an estimated $7.4 million annually. In a 1996 survey, respondents who were more concerned about the risk of foodborne illness cooked and ordered hamburgers more well-done than those who were less concerned. However, respondents who strongly preferred hamburgers less well-done cooked and ordered them that way, even after accounting for their concern about the risk of illness.
