Kenya Country Report OceanDocs
At the start of the 1990s, DFID support to sustainable agriculture mainly comprised a series of projects which supported GoK’s national agricultural research and communications services. DFID support for district level agriculture service delivery activities, principally through the EMI project, had recently ceased, although with the expectation that further support would be developed. In response to a DFID (EA) policy decision to withdraw from infrastructure development, support for construction of rural infrastructure had also wound down. 2. Following the death of the Senior RNR Adviser for Kenya in 1992, development of the SA portfolio drifted until 1994, when appointment of a new Senior RNR Adviser was rapidly followed by approval of several projects,...

An approach to assess the potential of agroecosystems in providing environmental services PAB
Turetta,Ana Paula Dias; Tonucci,Rafael; Mattos,Luciano Mansor de; Amaro,George; Balieiro,Fabiano de Carvalho; Prado,Rachel Bardy; Souza,Henrique Antunes de; Oliveira,Aline Pacobahyba de.
Abstract The objective of this work was to present an approach to evaluate soil functions in agroecosystems and their impact on environmental services (ES). An approach with case studies was proposed to assess the relationship between the establishment and management of agroecosystems, in three Brazilian biomes (Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Caatinga), and their environmental services provision, considering the specificities of each area. A set of soil parameters that can be used as indicators to monitor changes in the agroecosystem was also proposed. The environmental services types most affected by the establishment and management of the agroecosystems were the supporting and provisioning services, showing the potential of agricultural management in...

Labour inputs and financial profitability of conventional and agroforestry-based soil fertility management practices in Zambia AgEcon
Ajayi, Olu Clifford; Akinnifesi, Festus K.; Sileshi, G.; Kanjipite, W..
Several agro-ecological practices have been developed to increase the range of soil fertility management options available to farmers, but little information is available on their labour input requirement and profitability relative to conventional practices. This study used a multiple visit cost-route method to estimate labour inputs and financial profitability of agroforestry-based and conventional (with and without fertiliser) soil fertility management practices in eastern Zambia. Results show that aggregated over a five-year cycle, labour inputs used under agroforestry practices were lower than fertilised maize fields but higher than non-fertilised continuous cropped maize. Agroforestry practices were more profitable (NPV ranging between $233 and $327...

ASPECTOS TEÓRICOS E PRÁTICOS ASSOCIADOS À DECISÃO DE USO DE AGROTÓXICOS: UMA ABORDAGEM INTEGRADA ENTRE A AGRICULTURA, MEIO AMBIENTE E SAÚDE PÚBLICA. AgEcon
Soares, Wagner Lopes; Porto, Marcelo Firpo De Souza.

Sustainable Agriculture: An Update AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Provides some background on concerns about the sustainability of agriculture, outlines and discusses views about what constitutes sustainable agriculture and contrasts the sustainability of modern industrialised agriculture with that of traditional agriculture. Then the question is considered (taking into account the available evidence) whether organic agriculture is more sustainable than non-organic agriculture. Barriers to switching from non-organic to organic agriculture are mentioned. The development of agriculture usually has a serious negative impact on wild biodiversity. Whether or not more intensive agriculture would reduce the negative ecological footprint is unclear but many scientists believe it will do this. Globally, there has been a rapid...

An Economic Examination of Alternative Organic Cropping Systems in New York State AgEcon
Chan, Stephanie; Caldwell, Brian; Rickard, Bradley J..
This paper provides an economic analysis that compares the profitability and land management capability of four different organic cropping systems used to produce winter squash (Cucurbita pepo cv. ‘Delicata’) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata cv.’ Farao’). The organic cropping systems are part of a long term experiment designed for vegetable production in the Northeast, and designed to maintain ecological integrity and contribute to environmental stewardship. Our research addresses the causal chain from soil processes to economic outcomes including soil quality, efficiency in cycling of nutrients, off-farm impacts, pressures from weeds, insects and diseases, crop yield and quality, and marketing opportunities. Interactive crop budgets were...

Chemical Use Reductions in Urban Fringe Agriculture AgEcon
Adelaja, Adesoji O.; Sullivan, Kevin P.; Hailu, Yohannes G.; Govindasamy, Ramu.
Using an augmented profit function framework designed to account for externalities related to chemical use in agriculture, this paper explains the chemical use choices of farmers in an urban fringe farming environment. It further estimates empirical logit models of reduced insecticide, fungicide, herbicide, and fertilizer usage. Results suggest that farmers who perceive their regulatory environment to be strict, who have experienced right-to-farm conflicts, and who have farms larger in size are more likely to reduce their chemical use over time, vis-à-vis other farmers. The results also suggest the importance of other farm structural and business climate factors in determining chemical use reduction choices.

AS INOVAÇÔES TÉCNICAS NA TRANSIÇÂO AGROECOLÒGICA: O CASO DA ASSOCIAÇÂO DOS AGRICULTORES ECOLOGISTAS DE IPÊ E ANTÔNIO PRADO (AECIA) AgEcon
Moura, Luciane D. De; Diesel, Vivien.
Household Level Financial Incentives to Adoption of Conservation Agricultural Technologies in Africa AgEcon
Haggblade, Steven; Tembo, Gelson; Donovan, Cynthia.
Although several studies have been conducted to determine the viability of conservation agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa, almost all such studies are fragmented – often country specific – and with undue emphasis on output effects. However, assessment of the attractiveness of these technologies in Sub-Saharan Africa requires a detailed case-by-case comparison of changes in output and input costs and benefits. This paper reviews a set of responses known collectively as “conservation” or “sustainable” agriculture. Though definitions vary, these technologies typically involve agricultural management practices that prevent degradation of soil and water resources and thereby permit sustainable farm productivity without environmental degradation.

The purpose of this paper is to empirically show the importance of the social and joint responsibility certification to enhance the economic opportunities of family agriculture. Parallelly, it was tried to identify the most important obstacles in the area, from the different points of view, (political, social security and sanitary), in the region under study (Missões Gaúchas). This work provides a useful tool to the formulation of public policies in this area, approaching to the opinion of interviewed farmers in relation to their interest of taking part of that process and their expectations regarding to the future.

Analyzing Resources for the Production of High-Value Agricultural Products in the California High Desert AgEcon
Phillips, Jon C.; Hays, Lauren.
Urbanization of previously undeveloped land is a critical concern in Southern California. Housing development brings with it several potentially detrimental effects, among which are hardening of the landscape (pavement), diminished water absorption into the soil, and increased harmful runoff into the Pacific Ocean. The High Desert Region of San Bernardino County, California is an area currently experiencing significant development pressure. It is our belief that the development of agricultural production could, to some extent, substitute for residential and commercial development, and that agricultural production is a more sustainable use of the land in this area. This report examines and inventories resources of an unincorporated area near the Cajon Pass...

Sustainable Agriculture AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper provides an overview of concepts of sustainable agriculture and possible methods of attaining sustainability of agricultural yields and production. Reasons are given as to why modern industrialised agriculture might be less sustainable in terms of yields than traditional agriculture. The question of whether organic agriculture is likely to be more sustainable than non-organic agriculture is considered as well as organic agriculture’s likely impact on wild biodiversity. The impact of the development of agriculture on wild biodiversity is assessed because some environmentalists see the conservation of wild biodiversity as an important ingredient of sustainable development. However, there is a policy conflict between conservationist groups. Some...

Competing Visions of U.S. Agriculture: Can We Have Our Cake and Eat It Too in Reforming Federal Farm Policy AgEcon
Dobbs, Thomas L..
Two alternative visions for U.S. agriculture are described—“the global competitiveness vision” and the “sustainable agriculture vision”—together with farm policy reform proposals associated with each vision. The USDA’s proposed policy reforms (released in January 2007) also are briefly explained and compared to those of groups associated with the global competitiveness and sustainable agriculture visions. The author closes the article with a discussion of the compatibility of different reform proposals and the challenges of passing legislation containing major policy reform.
