Methods For Understanding Learning And Innovation Networks To Support Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture – The Approach Of The EU Research Project SOLINSA Transition to sustainable agriculture can be seen as radical innovation, which is driven by various factors. The EU research project SOLINSA looks at the particular role that Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture (LINSA) play in bringing about change. LINSAs respond to the demand for agriculture in transition by developing new intermediary tasks and roles and involving new actors and institutions into alliances for objectives that contribute to sustainability. Acting at the boundaries of established policy networks, LINSAs connect different policy authorities to... |

The market for organic foods in the UK is considered to be one of the leading ones in Europe, and world-wide is estimated to have a value of £1 billion (SA, 2003). The main reason why consumers buy organic food is considered to be health benefits, followed by taste. Of growing importance also are concerns for the environment and animal welfare, but these more altruistic concerns remain less important then personal ones. The rapid increase of demand for organic food over the last few years is seen to be the result of various food-scares (Farodoye, 1999; MINTEL, 1999; SA, 1999; Datamonitor, 2002). The development of the market appears, therefore, driven primarily by consumers, but retailers, especially the multiples, have had a key role in furthering growth,... |

Background: Developing sustainable farming system on large scale is very important for sustainable development of global agriculture. Scientific information about organic vs. conventional agriculture in the tropics is sparse. |

The paper illustrates the role and activities of Technology Platform Organics (TP Organics) in addressing the requirement that research in organic food and farming systems generates output of relevance to wider end-users. It describes approaches to research and knowledge exchange and suggests that a more participatory approach can improve organic research outcomes. It describes different models of research and knowledge exchange and their pros and cons. The criteria for success of a participatory approach to research also need to be different. These are discussed. |

Several actors in science, civil society and policy call for changes in the current publication and reputation system, which have implications for organic farming research. Change processes include funding and agenda setting, support for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, societal relevance and impact as criteria for research evaluation, open access publication and transparent, plural and interactive forms of peer-review and recognition. These developments show synergies that help to increase the support and reduce the effort for evaluation beyond scientific impact. |

The European Union as well as the Finnish authorities are guiding us towards a more sustainable world and the organic food system has an important role in it (Commission of European Communities 2004, MMM 2012). It is obvious that to develop the system more sustainable, we need food chain stakeholder-based research to give us better solutions as well as new innovations. The scientific research of organic food-related subjects in Finland has, for couple of decades already, been targeted mostly to the agricultural sector for the farm level operations. For being a complicated system, the research of the organic system needs more multidisciplinary, even holistic approach in the future. Also a better commitment from both, the Government as well as from the food... |

Experiential science is based on the unique knowledge gathered by experienced practitioners. Both the reflective evaluation of case studies and expert judgement processes and the use of pattern recognition are core elements of experiential scien-tific methodology. Development of experiential knowledge and insights are thus pri-marily based on experts’ actions and the reflections on those actions. The methodol-ogy has been created based on intensive cooperation between single farmers or farmer groups and scientists/advisors. Experiential knowledge is not only holistic, but also adequate. As in formal science, experienced practitioners develop valid knowl-edge and in new, unknown situations they have a capability to integrate their diagno-sis (“knowing... |
