Methods For Understanding Learning And Innovation Networks To Support Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture – The Approach Of The EU Research Project SOLINSA 21
Moschitz, Heidrun; Home, Robert.
Methods For Understanding Learning And Innovation Networks To Support Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture – The Approach Of The EU Research Project SOLINSA Transition to sustainable agriculture can be seen as radical innovation, which is driven by various factors. The EU research project SOLINSA looks at the particular role that Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture (LINSA) play in bringing about change. LINSAs respond to the demand for agriculture in transition by developing new intermediary tasks and roles and involving new actors and institutions into alliances for objectives that contribute to sustainability. Acting at the boundaries of established policy networks, LINSAs connect different policy authorities to...

ESRS Summerschool 2014 : Theoretical Approaches to the Ecologisation of Agrifood Systems and Rural Landscapes 21
Lamine, Claire; Faugère, Elsa.
Transitions towards more sustainable agrifood systems and rural landscapes are at the core of societal demands, technological but also social innovations and renewed public policies at various scales. In rural sociology they are addressed through different theoretical frameworks and the main objective of the ESRS PhD Summer School this year, is to discuss these competing and sometimes articulated frameworks and thereby to help the PhD students to clarify their own theoretical choices and to position them in relation to other theoretical frameworks that are used in rural sociology. For students who are rather at the beginning of their PhD, the aim will be to help them organize their state of the art and clarify their problematisation, while for students...

Consumer attitudes in North-west England to organic and regional food 21
Padel, S.
The market for organic foods in the UK is considered to be one of the leading ones in Europe, and world-wide is estimated to have a value of £1 billion (SA, 2003). The main reason why consumers buy organic food is considered to be health benefits, followed by taste. Of growing importance also are concerns for the environment and animal welfare, but these more altruistic concerns remain less important then personal ones. The rapid increase of demand for organic food over the last few years is seen to be the result of various food-scares (Farodoye, 1999; MINTEL, 1999; SA, 1999; Datamonitor, 2002). The development of the market appears, therefore, driven primarily by consumers, but retailers, especially the multiples, have had a key role in furthering growth,...

Studying conversion as a human activity system 21
Padel, Susan.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Farmers convert to organic farming for a variety of reasons including environmental concerns, problems with conventional systems, and personal and financial reasons. They also vary in their management styles. These personal characteristics are rarely considered as explaining variables in comparative studies of farming systems, because of the contrasting methods used to evaluate personal objectives and attitudes as opposed to farm activities. Farming should be seen as a human activity system, in which people actively manage some natural resources, for the purpose of producing output, influenced by their subjective values and attitudes. The Farming Systems Research (FSR) approach aims to...

Was geschieht bei Systemaufstellungen?

Technology Platform Organics: Knowledge Generation and Exchange in Organic Food And Farming Research 21
Padel, Susanne; Pearce, Bruce; Cuoco, Eduardo; Schlueter, Marco; Niggli, Urs; Schmid, Otto; Willer, Helga; Huber, Machteld; Halberg, Niels; Micheloni, Cristina.
The paper illustrates the role and activities of Technology Platform Organics (TP Organics) in addressing the requirement that research in organic food and farming systems generates output of relevance to wider end-users. It describes approaches to research and knowledge exchange and suggests that a more participatory approach can improve organic research outcomes. It describes different models of research and knowledge exchange and their pros and cons. The criteria for success of a participatory approach to research also need to be different. These are discussed.

Several actors in science, civil society and policy call for changes in the current publication and reputation system, which have implications for organic farming research. Change processes include funding and agenda setting, support for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, societal relevance and impact as criteria for research evaluation, open access publication and transparent, plural and interactive forms of peer-review and recognition. These developments show synergies that help to increase the support and reduce the effort for evaluation beyond scientific impact.

The new tendencies in the scientific research of the organic food system in Finland 21
Nuutila, J..
The European Union as well as the Finnish authorities are guiding us towards a more sustainable world and the organic food system has an important role in it (Commission of European Communities 2004, MMM 2012). It is obvious that to develop the system more sustainable, we need food chain stakeholder-based research to give us better solutions as well as new innovations. The scientific research of organic food-related subjects in Finland has, for couple of decades already, been targeted mostly to the agricultural sector for the farm level operations. For being a complicated system, the research of the organic system needs more multidisciplinary, even holistic approach in the future. Also a better commitment from both, the Government as well as from the food...

The role of soil science in optimization of soil resource management 21
Schjønning, P..
Soils in the Nordic countries are threatened, primarily by erosion, compaction, and loss of OM. The EU Soil Thematic Strategy has suggested a Framework for implementation of tools to counteract the threats to a sustained soil quality. Soil scientists should take part in this process and accept the need to do so in a close cooperation with stakeholders and fellow col-leagues in related scientific branches. The diversity of soils calls for the development of GIS-based tools to identify the best strategy at given locations. An isolated focus on soil quality indicators in monitoring programmes is strongly discouraged.

How can veterinarians be interesting partners for organic dairy farmers? French farmers’ point of views 21
Duval, Julie; Bareille, Nathalie; Fourichon, Christine; Madouasse, Aurélien; Vaarst, Mette.
Organic dairy farmers must live up to the organic goal of ‘good health’ in respect the organic principles and regulation. Veterinarians could be the organic dairy farmers’ expected sparring partners in reaching this goal but have found difficulties to establish advisory relationships with them. The objectives of this study are −from organic dairy farmers’ points of view- (i) to describe farmers’ objectives and strategies regarding herd health, (ii) to describe private veterinarians’ roles in farmers’ animal health promotion strategies and (iii) to identify farmers’ reasons for accepting veterinarians in an advisory role. Fourteen organic dairy farmers were interviewed using qualitative research interviews. Data collection and analysis was performed using a...

Entrepreneurial Culture And Capability of Organic Farmers’ Organizations in the Philippines 21
Buena, Maria Rowena; Whitney, Cory W..
The entrepreneurial culture of farmers’ organizations of Magsasaka at Siyentipiko Para sa Pag- unlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG) in the Philippines is a contribution to Organic 3.0. The mechanisms necessary to reinforce an entrepreneurial culture for the Organic farmers’ organizations of MASIPAG are described. Different PGS groups have similar entrepreneurial capabilities yet dissimilar competitive success and organizational cultural dimensions. Much work is needed to develop the entrepreneurial capabilities, we recommend that farmers actively participate in marketing activities within their localities, improve production, and take advantage of expanding markets; farmers’ organizations leaders should encourage members to increase production and entice...

Baars, Ton; Baars, E..
Experiential science is based on the unique knowledge gathered by experienced practitioners. Both the reflective evaluation of case studies and expert judgement processes and the use of pattern recognition are core elements of experiential scien-tific methodology. Development of experiential knowledge and insights are thus pri-marily based on experts’ actions and the reflections on those actions. The methodol-ogy has been created based on intensive cooperation between single farmers or farmer groups and scientists/advisors. Experiential knowledge is not only holistic, but also adequate. As in formal science, experienced practitioners develop valid knowl-edge and in new, unknown situations they have a capability to integrate their diagno-sis (“knowing...

Sundrum, Albert; Trangolao, A.; Köpke, Ulf.
