World wide many wine farms are converting into organic or biodynamic viticulture. The main reasons are better wine quality and healthier wine with the long-term aim of sustainability in viticulture. In 2005 a long-term study started in Geisenheim. The objective of the research program is to investigate, compare and optimise the techniques of integrated, organic and particularly biodynamic wine production in terms of resource protection and food quality. The goals of this study are to look at the effects on the biological and microbial activity in the soil, the vegetative and generative growth of the vine, microbiology, the grape and wine quality and the sustainability of the three viticultural systems. |

So far no official statistical data on the current status of organic viticulture in Europe exist. Even though most countries in the European Union, the EU accession countries and the EFTA countries collate data on their land under organic management, figures on land use patterns are not always available. The share of organic vineyards of all vineyards is still small. The percentage of organic vineyards is – with the exception of Greece, Italy, Spain - smaller than the percentage of organic land of all agricultural land in the respective countries. This is particularly striking for Austria and Switzerland where only little more than 1 % of the vineyards are organic whereas the total organic land is around eight per cent of all agricultural land. It is also... |

Currently no reliable modern growing methods for high quality plantlets are available for organic fruit tree and grapevine nurseries, suitable for Swiss conditions. Such methods need to be developed. Since 2005 organic fruit and wine producers have to use plantlets from organic nurseries. Currently, prices for these plants are higher and their external quality is lower than that of conventional plants. Therefore organic growers and nurseries have expressed their urgent demand for improved production techniques to reach an “as-conventional” quality of the organic plantlets. As part of the project on-farm research trials are carried out on: i) different fertilization concepts; ii) substitution of ramification-hormones (manual methods or natural... |

Service crops are crops grown with the aim of providing non-marketed ecosystem services, i.e. differing from food, fiber and fuel production. Vineyard soils face various agronomic issues such as poor organic carbon levels, erosion, fertility losses, and numerous studies have highlighted the ability of service crops to address these issues. In addition to their ability to increase soil organic matter and fertility, and reduce runoff and erosion processes, service crops provide a large variety of ecosystem services in vineyards such as weed control, pest and disease regulation, water supply, water purification, improvement of field trafficability and maintenance of soil biodiversity. However, associating service crops with grapevines may also generate... |

This conference represents a continuation of previous meetings and is intended to bring together active researchers and advisers involved in organic fruit growing to discuss latest results and methods. The main object is the coordination of research and to organize joint research projects. The official language of the workshop is English. Contributions are possible in English and German. Oral presentations will be simultaneously translated to English. --------------------- Table of Contents of the "10th International Conference on Cultivation Technique and Phytopathological Problems in Organic Fruit-Growing and Viticulture 2002": Fruit-growing - Resistance breeding - Breeding apples with durable disease resistance - Yield and Quality of New... |

The existing methods are applicable to multispecies cropping systems with perennials. However, the particular features of these cropping systems highlight the drawbacks of each of them. Therefore, combining these approaches, where and when it is possible, should be preferred. Whatever the method, evaluation of the new systems requires new indicators development, to account for the multiple productions with very different timescales and serving varying objectives. Development of simple and effective sets of indicators adapted to these systems is a powerful tool to boost the design realm, for practitioners and researchers alike. |
