Small Reservoirs, Landscape Changes and Water Quality in Sub-SaharanWest Africa ArchiMer
Cecchi, Philippe; Forkuor, Gerald; Cofie, Olufunke; Lalanne, Franck; Poussin, Jean-christophe; Jamin, Jean-yves.
Small reservoirs (SRs) are essential water storage infrastructures for rural populations of Sub-SaharanWest Africa. In recent years, rapid population increase has resulted in unprecedented land use and land cover (LULC) changes. Our study documents the impacts of such changes on the water quality of SRs in Burkina Faso. Multi-temporal Landsat images were analyzed to determine LULC evolutions at various scales between 2002 and 2014. Population densities were calculated from downloaded 2014 population data. In situ water samples collected in 2004/5 and 2014 from selected SRs were analyzed for Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) loads, an integrative proxy for water quality. The expansion of crop and artificial areas at the expense of natural covers controlled...

Analyse bacteriologique de l'eau par mesure potentiometrique de la reduction de l'acide lipoique ArchiMer
Charriere, G; Jouenne, T; Junter, G.
A simple potentiometric technique to detect and enumerate the bio-indicators of water contamination is described. The technique consists in measuring the redox potential of a specific culture medium saturated with oxygen where bacteria are incubated in presence of lipoic acid (LA). These micro-organisms reduce LA to dihydrolipoic acid, giving rise to an important potential drop in the system. This potentiometric "signal" reveals the presence of active metabolic bacteria in the medium. The major assets of potentiometric measurements in presence of LA lies in the reliability and intelligibility of the results (the redox phenomenon being qualitatively and quantitatively studied), associated to a very simple technology. Futhermore, this technique is perfectly...

Depuration: An administrative overview ArchiMer
Somerset, I.
At the 1964 National Shellfish Sanitation Workshop, Mr. Eugene Jensen presented a thought-provoking paper outlining the rationale for the depuration of shellfish. Mr. Jensen noted that "we are committed to the principal that shellfish must be as safe to eat as other ordinary food" and that "the problems of assuring the sanitary quality of coastal areas will increase rather than diminish. This is not the same as saying that pollution will increase" (Jensen, 1964). It is recognised that additional use of the waters and shore areas will have adverse impacts on the water quality and shellfish resource quantity and quality. If we are to maintain a program which will permit the consumer to eat shellfish in any form they choose, we must develop the means to...

Water quality criteria and monitoring for marine mollusc culture : the French experience ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Berthome, Jean-paul.
The impact of the main parameters of water quality which act on the life history of molluscs are presented. Two types of parameters are examined: the first are the physical-chemical parameters as temperature, salinity, turbidity, oxygen concentrations. They can be modified by perturbations directly related to human activities such as management of physical operations, e.g. constructions of dams, dredging for channels or for extraction of materials. Particular attention is given to inputs of nutrients with as consequences eutrophication and depletion of oxygen causing anoxie conditions. Attention will he focussed on some phytoplankton species like Gyrodinium aurelum which can cause mortalities in mollusc shellfish. The action of the main pollutants...

Impact of weather conditions on Escherichia coli accumulation in oysters of the Thau lagoon (the Mediterranean, France) ArchiMer
Derolez, Valerie; Soudant, Dominique; Fiandrino, Annie; Cesmat, Ludovic; Serais, Ophelie.
Aims The Thau lagoon shellfish are regularly impacted by microbial pollution of faecal origin, which cause European health standards to be exceeded and closure of the shellfish harvest. The aims of this study were to investigate the impact of weather and hydrological conditions on Escherichia coli (E. coli) accumulation factor (AF) between water and oysters and to evaluate the relevance of the use of this ratio for the purpose of sanitary risk assessment. Methods and results Water and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) were sampled simultaneously in situ during 18 months in periods of dry weather and after rainfall events. Shellfish sanitary thresholds were exceeded in both periods. The E. coli AFs measured after rainfall (median = 6) were lower than in dry...

Eutrophication modelling chain for improved management strategies to prevent algal blooms in the Bay of Seine ArchiMer
Passy, Paul; Le Gendre, Romain; Garnier, Josette; Cugier, Philippe; Callens, Julie; Paris, Francois; Billen, Gilles; Riou, Philippe; Romero, Estela.
Eutrophication of the Seine estuary and the Bay of the Seine is a crucial environmental issue for the management of ecosystems and economic activities related to fisheries and tourism. A large quantity of nutrients, especially nitrogen, is brought to the coastal zone by the Seine River, the main input of that area, but also by smaller rivers along the Normandy coast. This large delivery of nitrogen leads to an imbalance between nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and silica (Si), which affects the growth of planktonic organisms and can exacerbate the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). These events can be damaging for shellfish fisheries, an important economic resource for the region. The study describes a new modelling chain coupling a riverine and a...

Bilan des connaissances sur la qualité de l'eau dans la zone du polder conchylicole de Bouin - Projet LEAUPOLD ArchiMer
Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Buchet, Vincent; Dupuy, Beatrice.

An inter-laboratory study of the accuracy of microbial source tracking (MST) methods was conducted using challenge fecal and sewage samples that were spiked into artificial freshwater and provided as unknowns (blind test samples) to the laboratories. The results of the Source Identification Protocol Project (SIPP) are presented in a series of papers that cover 41 MST methods. This contribution details the results of the virus and bacteriophage methods targeting human fecal or sewage contamination. Human viruses used as source identifiers included adenoviruses (HAdV), enteroviruses (EV), norovirus Groups I and II (NoVI and NoVII), and polyomaviruses (HPyVs). Bacteriophages were also employed, including somatic coliphages and F-specific RNA bacteriophages...

Effects of hypoxia and elevated ammonia concentration on the viability of red snapper embryos and early larvae ArchiMer
Bardon-albaret, Agnes; Saillant, Eric.
The effects of hypoxic conditions and elevated ammonia concentrations on the viability of embryos and newly hatched larvae of the red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) were investigated. In all experiments, tested levels of hypoxia or ammonia concentrations were applied to embryos and unfed newly hatched larvae from three different spawns. Exposures began at 1 h post fertilization (pf) and lasted until all individuals in a group had expired. Survival rates were monitored daily in duplicates for each spawn in each treatment. Fertilized eggs exposed to 2 mg L− 1 dissolved oxygen (29% saturation) showed complete mortality before hatch while 81% of embryos in control groups (> 85% saturation) hatched and subsequently maintained high survival until 5 days pf....

Dynamics of an estuarine ecosystem - The Chesapeake Bay experience: Statistical approaches and water quality patterns ArchiMer
Alden, Rw.
A long-term water quality monitoring program has been established in the Virginian waters of the Chesapeake Bay. To date, over eight years of data have been analyzed to characterize spatio-temporal patterns and long-term trends in water quality. Complementary multivariate statistical procedures were employed to define spatial and seasonal patterns, while a series of non-parametric trend analyses were used for determining overall, site-specific, and season-specific long-term trends for water quality variables in the tributaries and mainstem of the Bay. Particular attention was focused on determining the effect of river flow on the trends, because flow rates in some of the tributaries have changed dramatically since the beginning of the monitoring program....

Combined effects of water quality and stocking density on welfare and growth of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Labbe, Laurent; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Severe, Armelle; Le Roux, Annick; Le Delliou, Herve; Quemener, Loic.
An 84-day experiment assessed the combined effects of two fresh water quality levels (H: 1.71 +/- 0.15 mg O(2)l(-1) and 0.28 +/- 0.01 mg l(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (T-AN), L: 5.15 +/- 0.07 mg O2l(-1) and 0.54 +/- 0.01 mg T- AN l(-1)) and 3 stabilized stocking densities: 24.8 +/- 0.2, 74.2 +/- 0.5 and 120.0 +/- 0.9 kg m(-3)) on rainbow trout. Fish were fed using demand feeders with rewards proportional to stocking density. Mass increase was significantly affected by water quality and stocking density, being highest in H water and the lowest at 120 kg m(-3). There was no significant difference in final weight between 25 and 74 kg m(-3), but at 120 kg m(-3) it was 27% and 19% lower in H and L water respectively than at 25 kg m(-3). Feed intake (FI) from day...

Review of grow-out techniques under tropical conditions: Experience of Thailand on seabass (Lates calcarifer ) and grouper (Epinephelus malabaricus) ArchiMer
Tookwinas, S.
Seabass and grouper have been reared in cages in coastal waters in Thailand for 10 years. The fingerlings are nursed for a month in nylon nursing cages. Then, the juvenile fish are reared in culture cages which can be stationary or floating. The cage is usually 5 x 5 x 2 metres. The stocking density is around 500 to 2000 fish per cage. The survival rate is approximately 80%. The selling price at the culture site is 80 baht and 250 baht per kg for sea bass and grouper respectively. The culture method and economics of culture are explained.

Spatial distribution and activity patterns as welfare indicators in response to water quality changes in European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Alfonso, Sebastien; Sadoul, Bastien; Cousin, Xavier; Bégout, Marie-laure.
In aquaculture, fish are exposed to unavoidable stressors that can be detrimental for their health and welfare. However, welfare in farmed fish can be difficult to assess, and, so far, no standardized test has been universally accepted as a welfare indicator. This work contributes to the establishment of behavioural welfare indicators in a marine teleost in response to different water quality acute stressors. Groups of ten fish were exposed to high Total Ammonia Nitrogen concentration (High TAN, 18 mg.L-1), Hyperoxia (200 % O2 saturation), Hypoxia (20 % O2 saturation), or control water quality (100% O2 saturation and TAN < 2.5 mg.L-1) over 1 hour. Fish were then transferred in a novel environment for a group behaviour test under the same water quality...

During 84 days, the effects of density on juvenile sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) (76 +/- 16 g) were studied in an experimental tank-based flow through system. Performance, stress response and resistance to virus infection were analysed under five stabilized rearing densities: 10, 20, 40, 70 and 100 kg m(-3). Water quality parameters (CO2, total ammonia nitrogen and O-2) were measured and maintained close to the recommended values for farmed sea bass by adjusting water renewal exchange. No significant differences were observed between density treatments, neither on stress response (cortisol) nor susceptibility to nodavirus. With regards to biological performances, the daily feed intake and specific growth rate were significantly lower in fish reared at...

Toward Long-Term Aquatic Science Products from Heritage Landsat Missions ArchiMer
Pahlevan, Nima; Balasubramanian, Sundarabalan V.; Sarkar, Sudipta; Franz, Bryan A..
This paper aims at generating a long-term consistent record of Landsat-derived remote sensing reflectance (R-rs) products, which are central for producing downstream aquatic science products (e.g., concentrations of total suspended solids). The products are derived from Landsat-5 and Landsat-7 observations leading to Landsat-8 era to enable retrospective analyses of inland and nearshore coastal waters. In doing so, the data processing was built into the SeaWiFS Data Analysis System (SeaDAS) followed by vicariously calibrating Landsat-7 and -5 data using reference in situ measurements and near-concurrent ocean color products, respectively. The derived R rs products are then validated using (a) matchups using the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data...
