This study aimed to analyze the impact of ryegrass as a soil cover on soil moisture level, initial rice establishment, grain yield and weed control in irrigated rice planted after ryegrass. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in randomized blocks design with four replications. Ryegrass (cv. BRS-Ponteio) was planted in autumn and glyphosate was used as a knockdown before rice planting. Ryegrass plants were cut at 0, 0.15, 0.30 or 0.45 m above ground, resulting in different mulching levels. Rice (cv. Irga-424-CL) was planted in spring and was managed according to local crop recommendations. Although positive to the overall cropping system, ryegrass mulching suppressed rice emergence, especially with ryegrass cutting heights above 0.30 m, thus... |

Improved methods of weed control are required to support expansion of large-scale cowpea cultivation in mid-west Brazil. With the aim of testing our hypothesis that the tolerance of cowpea cultivars to sulfentrazone is dose- and genotype-dependent, we assessed the effects of increasing doses (0, 250, 500 and 1,000 g ha-1 of sulfentrazone) on the cultivars BRS Imponente, BRS Novaera, BRS Tumucumaque and BRS Itaim. The phytotoxic effects of sulfentrazone varied according to the dose of herbicide applied, although the symptoms were mild and only observable at the initial stages of development and at the highest dose tested. No statistically significant interactions were detected between cultivars and doses, and there were no significant differences between... |

In recent times, there has been an environmental pressure to reduce the amount of pesticides applied to crops and, consequently, the crop production costs. Therefore, investments have been made in technologies that could potentially reduce the usage of herbicides on weeds. Among such technologies, Machine Learning approaches are rising in number of applications and potential impact. Therefore, this article aims to identify the main machine learning algorithms used in integrated crop-livestock systems for weed management. Based on a systematic literature review, it was possible to determine where the selected studies were performed and which crop types were mostly used. The main research terms in this study were: "machine learning algorithms" + "weed... |

One of the main reasons for environmental disturbances such as declination in pasture productivity and biodiversity losses is the high infestation of herbaceous weeds, generally referred to as ?Juquira? in the Amazon region. If they are not adequately controlled, such infestation might lead to degradation of pasture, resulting in complete loss of productivity and subsequent abandonment of the area. In this sense, this chapter aims to describe the main invasive species present in the Amazon region, as well as to characterize both the old and innovative techniques of use in agriculture, in large and small scale, for the control of agricultural pests. |

Abstract The optimum plant density in Barraganete plantain (Musa paradisiaca (L.) AAB cv. Curare enano) was determined in Los Angeles-Provincia de Los Ríos, Ecuador. Treatments (sowing distance: T1 = 3m x 4m, T2 = 3m x 3m, T3 = 3m x 2m, T4 = 3m x 1.5m and T5 = 3m x 1m), were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with five treatments and three replicates per treatment. The number of hands per cluster, hand weight, weeks to flowering, weeks to harvest, production for export and weed incidence in plantain crop, were evaluated. Variance analysis was performed and means were submitted to the Tukey test at 5% probability (p = 0.05). The optimum sowing distance was 2m between plants and 3m between rows. The best density was 1666 plants. ha-1 and... |

In this article, we review allelopathy studies conducted in Brazil or involving plant species that occur in the country. Conceptions and misconceptions associated with allelopathy, as well as some international criteria to be applied in allelopathic research, are presented and discussed. We observed a sharp increase in the number of papers on this subject conducted in Brazil between 1991 and 2010. However, most studies are conducted under laboratory conditions, lack a clear hypothesis or a solid justification, and typically make use of target species that do not co-exist with the donor species under natural conditions. We also found that most studies do not take the additional steps in order to purify and identify the bioactive molecules. We recommend that... |
