The aim of this project was to establish the “state of the art” for inter-row hoeing and its associated agronomic practices in organic cereal and pulse crops. To achieve this a detailed review of literature was undertaken. • To facilitate inter-row cultivation in cereal and pulse crops, some adjustment of row spacing may be required. For cereals, drilling crops in 25 cm rows can reduce yield compared with normal drilling practice, primarily due to greater intra-specific competition amongst the crop (i.e. competition between crop plants). • The yield penalty resulting from widely spaced crop rows can be minimised using a number of approaches, depending on the drill: 1. Reducing the seed rate in widely spaced crop rows can help to minimise excessive... |

Factors reducing yield of organic white clover seed production were investigated in Denmark. In thirty-six fields from different regions, density of flower heads and their area, and weevils of the genera Apion and Hypera, hatching from flower heads, were assessed. In fifteen of these fields, additional measurements were made in order to calculate potential yield and yieldreducing factors. Flower heads had a mean of ninetytwo florets per head, of which proportionately 0,59 were intact, 0,08 were not pollinated and 0,34 damaged by weevils; 0,16 of the florets contained larvae of Apion species. In intact florets the mean number of seeds was 3,6. Density and size of flower heads were correlated with low density of flower heads leading to significantly more... |

Introduction In Switzerland, the organic sector has been trying to reduce the massive import of protein crops for feed by encouraging grain legume cultivation during the past years (Clerc et al, 2015). The main limiting factors of low yield stability and high weed pressure were successfully overcome through intercropping of peas and faba beans with barley and oats, respectively. Thus, the production of peas and faba beans grew continuously from 2010 to 2015 from 200t and 90t to 1170t and 560t, respectively (bioaktuell 2017). For more diversification of domestic grain legume cultivation and supply, FiBL has started field trials with blue (Lupinus angustifolius) and white lupins (L. albus) in 2014. The high risk of anthracnose, caused by the fungal agent... |

Intercropping (IC) is the simultaneous cultivation of more than one crop species on the same piece of land. The IC practice offers many advantages to organic agriculture in terms of resource use, yield stability, weed management, and increased diversification of agroecosystems. Field experiments carried out at two sites in Denmark over three consecutive cropping seasons showed that ICs of cereals and grain legumes gave higher yields, less weeds, lower infection with plant diseases, and higher grain quality compared to corresponding sole crops. |

Six Vicia sativa varieties were cultivated in the year 2011 in northern Germany in pure stand and in different seed ratios in mixed cropping with oat. Parameters of yield differentiated to V. sativa and oat as well as yield performance and weed development were assessed. Results showed a better yield performance of V. sativa compared to other grain legumes. The harvest of V. sativa in pure stand with the combine is not advised because of the low resistance to lodging. A mixed cropping of V. sativa and oat with 50 % of the seed rates of pure stand showed for the most tested varieties the highest yield of V. sativa and total yield of V. sativa and oat. |

At the Experimental Farm of the Thünen Institute of Organic Farming the effect of sulphur fertilisation in form of MgSO4 and CaSO4 of a red clover-grass mixture was tested in the years 2013 - 2015. At the beginning of the vegetation period clover-grass plots were fertilised in the first and second year of usage with 30 and 60 kg S ha-1 and were compared to unfertilised plots. The fertilisation resulted in significantly higher fresh weight and - with one exception of the second year usage in 2013 higher dry matter yields. The forage quality was significantly increased by sulphur fertilisation. Due to higher sulphur contents in the fertilised plots the N/S-ratios showed values below the threshold of 15 for an adequate sulphur supply. The N-withdrawals... |
