A Fisheries Co-management Case Study from The Gambia OceanDocs
Njie, M.; Mikkola, H..
User involvement in fisheries management has been around for some time, but few analytical papers have been published on the subject in Africa. Most of these initiatives fall under the rubric of co-management. But what is the concept of co-management in theory and how does it work in practice? In reviewing a comprehensive artisanal fisheries development project, we will attempt to answer this question in the context of The Gambia.

CERTCOST News Organic Eprints
Rebsdorf, Simon Olling.
The EU research project, CERTCOST, has issued the first digital CERTCOST newsletter. Despite the fact that organic certification and its costs might be a somewhat dry subject from a consumer’s point of view, we intend to present the results in a eatable manner. The International Center for Research in Organic Food Systems, ICROFS, is responsible for dissemination of the CERTCOST project.

ECONOMICS AND ECONOMISTS FOR ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ADVANCEMENT AgEcon
Schapper, Henry P..
My subject arises from a recent, though limited, personal experience in economic planning in an underdeveloped country. This was as a member of the Economic Survey Mission on the Economic Development of Zambia organised jointly by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the F.A.O. It confronted me with questions about the usefulness of economics and the adequacy of economists for the development of policies to enable the majority of mankind to be freed from the shackles of poverty.

WOOL IN 1980 AgEcon
Watson, Alistair S..
Since the introduction of a reserve price scheme in 1970, the interest in wool marketing previously shown by agricultural economists has not been maintained outside the public service and the wool industry itself. Nor is the subject as divisive amongst wool growers with, in general, 'orderly marketing' now acceptable to all factions of wool growers. The history of wool marketing discussion in Australia is reviewed and some reasons for this changing climate of opinion are discussed. An attempt is made to assess the actual performance of the buffer stock scheme in the light of the academic literature of the 1960s.

MULTIPRODUCT PRODUCTION CHOICES AND POLICY RESPONSE AgEcon
McIntosh, Christopher S.; Shumway, C. Richard.
A restricted profit function model of California agriculture is specified and estimated subject to prior information provided by economic theory. Symmetry, homogeneity, and convexity of the profit function are maintained in the estimation. Parameter estimates and elasticities are presented for four input and 10 output equations. Tests of the hypotheses of nonjointness in inputs and Hicks-neutral technical change in variable inputs and outputs are rejected. The impacts of decoupling agricultural program payments are examined.

THE ROLE OF EMOTIONS AND PERCEIVED CONTROL IN THE RECOVERY STRATEGY OF SERVICE COMPANIES AgEcon
Kolos, Krisztina; Kenesei, Zsofia.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of service recovery tactics. The research included a qualitative study based on 30 interviews with customers and employees of a telecommunication company. This was followed by a quantitative study using between subject experimental designs based on scenarios. Our research results suggest that employees’ positive emotions and perceived control during the recovery process make consumers more satisfied.

AN ANALYSIS OF MARKETING CHANNELS OF LOCAL FOOD IN SCOTLAND AgEcon
Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Watts, D.; Leat, Philip M.K..
Local food and its possibilities for addressing sustainable regional growth, food availability, accessibility and affordability has received considerable attention in the discussion on and development of the National Food Policy in Scotland. In terms of methodology, the paper continues the analysis of the local food database for Scotland constructed in Watts et al (2010) by exploring the marketing outlets used by the local food enterprises. This subject is important because it may provide information about the degree of entrepreneurship of the involved firms.

ECONOMIC THRESHOLDS: AN APPLICATION TO FLORICULTURE AgEcon
Schumacher, Sara K.; Marsh, Thomas L.; Williams, Kimberly A..
This paper introduces conjunctive optimal pest management and production decision rules applied to the floriculture industry. A grower is faced with optimally controlling multiple pests and applying cultural controls to maximize the expected net present value of benefits within a discrete time framework, subject to biological and marketing constraints.

OPTIMAL PEST CONTROL IN FLORICULTURE PRODUCTION OF ORNAMENTAL CROPS AgEcon
Schumacher, Sara K.; Marsh, Thomas L.; Williams, Kimberly A..
We develop a conceptual bioeconomic model of floriculture production, wherein optimal decision rules depend on an intertemporal economic objective to maximize profits subject to economic and biological processes. The necessary conditions highlight intertemporal tradeoffs between aesthetic benefits and expected future net benefits of insect stocks, which have important policy implications.

THE JOURNAL OF FOOD DISTRIBUTION RESEARCH: A 15-YEAR PERSPECTIVE, 1984-1998 AgEcon
Corbett, James J..
In order to identify future implications for research in a discipline, it is sometimes necessary to investigate areas that have been examined previously. In this paper, a content analysis of 15 years of research articles published in the Journal of Food Distribution Research was undertaken to examine the direction that researchers have taken in the field of food distribution. An identification was made of the salient subject/topic areas documented over a significant period of time, 1984 through 1998.

ESTIMATING A MIXED STRATEGY EMPLOYING MAXIMUM ENTROPY AgEcon
Golan, Amos; Karp, Larry S.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
Generalized maximum entropy may be used to estimate mixed strategies subject to restrictions from game theory. This method avoids distributional assumptions and is consistent and efficient. We use this method to estimate the mixed strategies of duopolistic airlines.

Consumer Information in the food service industry vs. food retailing AgEcon
Rogge, C.B.E.; Becker, Tilman C..
In order to define consumer expectations over a traceability and information system for the entire food supply chain, the information behaviour of consumers in the food service industry has been subject to an analysis for the first time. In comparison to consumers in retailing, significant differences appear in information seeking behaviour as well as in the information desired.

SOCIAL GAIN, WELFARE, POLITICAL ECONOMY AND A' THAT AgEcon
Kelso, Maurice M..
The economic criterion of public investment choice is aggregate consumers' surpluses and producers' rents generated by the investment. Its analytical model is a social revenue function and a social cost function. It is a welfare criterion only so far as efficiency is a welfare component and then subject to severe limitations. It is argued here that the economist's conclusions rest in part on a set of value preferences; therefore, the test of their rightness is in part their acceptability to the public choice-maker.

Social Security Tax and Benefit Issues, Questions and Answers for Farmers and Workers AgEcon
Smith, Stuart F..
Social Security taxes are a major and growing expense of operating a farm business. Self-employed farmers and family farm workers have some flexibility in managing cash income subject to Social Security. A basic understanding of Social Security benefits as well as costs is required to make a rational decision about optimum coverage.
