ANALYSIS OF FOOD AWAY FROM HOME AND FOOD AT HOME CONSUMPTION: A SYSTEMS APPROACH AgEcon
Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Capps, Oral, Jr..
The demand for food away from home, food at home, and non-food items is investigated using a complete systems approach. Using the linear approximation of the dynamic version of the Almost Ideal Demand System, the results indicate that the share of total expenditure going to food away from home increases as the labor force participation rate of women increases. All expenditure elasticities are positive and all own-price elasticities are negative. Moreover, the demand for food away from home is more price sensitive than the demand for food at home. Seasonal patterns of consumption are also evident.

EXAMINING PACKER CHOICE OF SLAUGHTER CATTLE PROCURMENT AND PRICING METHODS AgEcon
Capps, Oral, Jr.; Love, H. Alan; Williams, Gary W.; Adams, Wendi L..
Using daily fed cattle purchase transaction records collected by the Packers and Stockyards Programs over the period April 1992 to April 1993, we identify characteristics associated with the choices of fed cattle procurement and pricing methods. The methodology involves the use of a multinomial logit model. Regional concentration; processing capacity; number of head per lot; average weight per head; cattle type; yield grade, quarterly grade, seasonality, and distance from packing plants play a significant role in determining the methods of procurement and pricing chosen by packers. The method chosen by packers to procure fed cattle also affects the choice of a given pricing method.

IMPORT DEMANDS FOR U.S. FRESH GRAPEFRUIT: EFFECT OF U.S. PROMOTION PROGRAMS AND TRADE POLICIES OF IMPORTING NATIONS AgEcon
Fuller, Stephen W.; Bello, Haruna; Capps, Oral, Jr..
This study estimates import demands for U.S. fresh grapefruit in Japan, France, Canada, and the Netherlands. Historically, these nations have imported about 90 percent of U.S. grapefruit exports. Four import demand functions were specified and estimated by joint generalized least squares based on the sample period 1969I to 1988IV. Results show that U.S. FOB price, per capita income of importing countries, exchange rates, price of substitutes, U.S. grapefruit promotion programs, and removal of trade restrictions have had an important effect on U.S. fresh grapefruit exports. Analyses suggest that U.S. producers can effectively promote fresh grapefruit in foreign markets, and that trade concessions have an important influence on grapefruit exports.

ANALYSIS OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION IN THE UNITED STATES: PROBABILITY AND LEVEL OF INTAKE AgEcon
Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Capps, Oral, Jr..
This article examines the impact of socio-demographic factors on individual consumption of alcohol in the United States using the Heckman procedure and logit analysis. Factors considered are urbanization, race, ethnicity, region, weight, height, sex, food stamp participation, employment status, diet status, day of consumption, household size, age, and income. All the variables, with the exception of ethnicity and food stamp participation, significantly influence the decision to consume alcohol. Results also indicate that urbanization, region, sex, food stamp participation, and household size significantly affect the level of alcohol consumption.

A RECOGNITION OF HEALTH AND NUTRITION FACTORS IN FOOD DEMAND ANALYSIS AgEcon
Capps, Oral, Jr.; Schmitz, John D..
A theoretical framework in which to formally consider health and nutrition factors in demand analyses is developed. The framework is employed to empirically identify and assess the impacts of information pertaining to cholesterol on the demands for beef, pork, poultry, and fish. Issues in considering health and nutrition factors in food demand analysis are documented.

Is Chocolate Milk the New-Age Energy\Sports Drink in the United States? AgEcon
Dharmasena, Senarath; Capps, Oral, Jr..
Data from U.S. households for calendar year 2008 were used in examining demographic and economic factors affecting demand for chocolate milk using Heckman two-step procedure. Price, income, age, education, region, race, Hispanic status, and presence of children were significant drivers of consumption of chocolate milk. Sample selection bias was statistically significant.

Assessing the Demand for a Functional Food Product: Is There Cannibalization in the Orange Juice Category? AgEcon
Yuan, Yan; Capps, Oral, Jr.; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
The demand for functional foods has increased notably in recent years due to growing consumer interest in diet and health issues. Currently, the food industry is introducing many types of new food products with functional attributes. Consequently, cannibalization is a critical issue for firms that offer multiple products within a certain product category. The identification and assessment of cannibalization are integral factors when making strategic decisions about new product introductions. Using scanner data from Information Resources, Inc. (IRI), pertaining to a particular functional food, namely a phytosterol-enriched product for orange juice, we find that no cannibalization effects exist with respect to its introduction. We also provide estimates of...

The Impact of Retail Promotion on the Purchase of Private Label Products: The Case of U.S. Processed Cheese AgEcon
Bouhlal, Yasser; Capps, Oral, Jr..
This study examines the impact of retail promotion on the purchase of private label products. The influence of private label coupons, national brand coupons, and store features is examined. To identify these effects, a logistic model Probit is estimated where the binary variable equals 1 if the household buys the private label product, and equals 0 if the private label product is not bought. The model gives the probability that Y=1 is chosen conditional on a set of explanatory variables. In this study we focus on the American processed cheese transactions and we use the ACNielsen Homescan Panel of U.S. households for the year 2005. No significant relationship was found between private label purchase and the level of private label couponing activity....

The Economic Effectiveness of the Cotton Checkoff Program AgEcon
Capps, Oral, Jr.; Williams, Gary W..
This report is an empirical analysis of the effectiveness of the marketing/promotion, nonagricultural research, and agricultural research activities associated with the cotton checkoff program over the period of 1986/87 through 2004/05. The analysis is based on a multi-equation, econometric, non-spatial, price equilibrium simulation model of U.S. and foreign fiber markets using annual data. The key average annual impacts of the cotton checkoff program on U.S. and foreign cotton and man-made fiber markets and their associated textile markets are reported. The results show that the returns to cotton producers as well as to cotton importers from the cotton checkoff program are positive. The average discounted benefit-cost ratios (BCR) for the cotton checkoff...

General Remedies to Local Problems: An Applied Researcher’s Manual to Multiple Imputation AgEcon
Kyureghian, Gayaneh; Capps, Oral, Jr.; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
Nonresponse is a pervasive and persistent problem in survey data. This research reviews several methods for imputing missing values. A special emphasis is placed on the multiple imputation methods as a more generalizable advanced remedy to missingness. An empirical application of these methods, along with a regression or conditional mean imputation, is provided. Contingent upon certain properties of data, inference based guidance to the choice and implementation of these methods is provided.

IMPACT OF FOOD CONTAMINATION ON BRANDS: A DEMAND SYSTEMS ESTIMATION OF PEANUT BUTTER AgEcon
Bakhtavoryan, Rafael; Capps, Oral, Jr.; Salin, Victoria.
A 2007 foodborne illness incident involving peanut butter is linked with structural change in consumer demand. Compensated and uncompensated own- and cross-price elasticities and expenditure elasticities were calculated for leading brands before and after the product recall using the Barten synthetic model and weekly time-series data from 2006 through 2008. Statistically significant differences in price elasticities for the affected brand, Peter Pan, were absent. After a period of 27 weeks, this brand essentially recovered from the food safety crisis. Significant differences in price elasticities were evident among non-affected brands. Hence, spillover effects and heightened competition are associated with the recall.
