| Androgenesis is a form of uniparental reproduction leading to progenies inheriting only the paternal set of chromosomes. It has been achieved with variable success in a number of freshwater species and can be attained by artificial fertilization of genetically inactivated eggs following exposure to gamma (gamma), X-ray or UV irradiation (haploid androgenesis) and by restoration of diploidy by suppression of mitosis using a pressure or thermal shock. The conditions for the genetic inactivation of the maternal genome in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) were explored using different combinations of UV irradiation levels and durations. | Stress enhances or inhibits neurogenesis in mammals and some fish species. The link between the two processes is still unclear. Most studies have been performed in very specific stressful or altered environments. Despite the known inter-individual divergence in coping abilities within populations, the relationship between the stress axis and neurogenesis has never been addressed in unstressed individuals. Here we correlate brain expression of the pcna (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and neurod1 (neurogenic differentiation factor 1) genes, two markers of neurogenesis, with transcripts of cortisol receptors in three fish species living in very distinct environments. | To face future decrease of marine resources, replacement of fishmeal and fish oil by plant products is nowadays worldwide priority for the aquaculture of carnivorous fish, especially salmonids. Genetic variability has been recently evidenced for growth ability on plant-based diet and pointed out potential genetic gains. In a context of fast feed evolution, this work compares heritabilities of growth parameters between rainbow trout fed with diet containing fish oil and fish meal and fish fed on diet devoid of marine products. Assessment of genotype diet interaction informs on potential family reranking between diets and potential consequences on current breeding programmes. |

| The influence of interaction between light intensity and tank wall colours on survival and growth of perch larvae (Perca fluviatilis L.) was investigated for 15 days after hatching. Three light intensities (250, 400 and 800 Ix) and four wall colours (black, dark grey, light grey and white) were used. At the end of the experiment, survival rates ranged between 1% and 26%, and varied according to the different treatments (P = 0.0001; df = 11). A global effect of light intensity was detected(P = 0.0001; df = 2) and the highest survival rate was observed under 250 Ix. | Polygenic sex determination, although suspected in several species, is thought to be evolutionarily unstable and has been proven in very few cases. In the European sea bass, temperature is known to influence the sex ratio. We set up a factorial mating, producing 5.893 individuals from 253 full-sib families, all reared in a single batch to avoid any between-families environmental effects. The proportion of females in the offspring was 18.3%, with a large variation between families. Interpreting sex as a threshold trait, the heritability estimate was 0.62 +/- 0.12. | We estimated genetic parameters of feed conversion ratio (FCR) and daily growth coefficient (DGC) using individual phenotypes measured in aquariums under a restricted feeding regime and genomic information on 2,722 SNP markers. The results showed a moderate heritability of both traits (0.26 for FCR and 0.41 for DGC) as well as close to unity negative genetic correlation between them. Thus, FCR of fish in aquariums could be improved by selecting fish for higher DGC. Nevertheless, these results must be taken with caution until we know whether individual FCR measured in aquariums also reflects the FCR of fish reared in groups. |

| The specific growth rate (SGR) of a cohort of 2000 tagged juvenile European sea bass was measured in a common tank, during two sequential cycles comprising three-weeks feed deprivation followed by three-weeks ad libitum re-feeding. After correction for initial size at age as fork length, there was a direct correlation between negative SGR (rate of mass loss) during feed deprivation and positive SGR (rate of compensatory growth) during re-feeding (Spearman rank correlation R=0.388, P=0.000002).
