Relationship between soil organic matter fractions and cover plants in Olive post planting Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Guimarães,Danielle Vieira; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Beiniach,Adnane; Bispo,Diêgo Faustolo Alves; Contins,Jéssica Gabriela Pimentel; Curi,Nilton.
Abstract Erosion is the main cause of soil degradation, compromising soil productivity and sustainability. As soil organic matter (SOM) is a key indicator of quality, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different olive tree managements on SOM and its soil fractions in soil (Inceptisol) and erosion sediments. Five treatments were installed: bare soil, olive cultivation in bare soil, olive tree intercropped with jack bean, olive tree intercropped with pearl millet, and olive tree cultivated with spontaneous vegetation; a contiguous area of native vegetation was used as reference. Carbon in soil and sediment were determined by wet oxidation with external heating, while the fractionation of SOM was performed based on granulometry. The Carbon Management...

Índices de qualidade do solo sob diferentes sistemas de uso e manejo florestal e cerrado nativo adjacente Rev. Ciênc. Agron.

Carbon pool ratios as scientific support to field morphology in the differentiation of dark subsurface soil horizons Scientia Agricola
Toma,Maíra Akemi; Owens,Phillip Ray; Silva,Carlos Alberto; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Silva,Elen Alvarenga; Curi,Nilton.
In soil surveys, it is usual to find profiles with an uncommon disposition of horizons. Dark horizons in depth might be either the consequence of erosion and redeposition of soil materials from upslope or an indication of the podzolization process, which forms a spodic horizon. Few laboratory analyses are known to characterize dark subsurface horizons which could allow for the differentiation of spodic from buried A horizons. Some researchers propose C-humic and C-fulvic acid fraction ratios and forms of carbon to analyze characteristics of these horizons. Therefore, this research aimed to characterize dark subsurface horizons found in soils under a Eucalyptus minimum tillage system in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and to relate soil organic...

Soil type spatial prediction from Random Forest: different training datasets, transferability, accuracy and uncertainty assessment Scientia Agricola
Machado,Diego Fernandes Terra; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Curi,Nilton; Menezes,Michele Duarte de.
ABSTRACT: Different uses of soil legacy data such as training dataset as well as the selection of soil environmental covariables could drive the accuracy of machine learning techniques. Thus, this study evaluated the ability of the Random Forest algorithm to predict soil classes from different training datasets and extrapolate such information to a similar area. The following training datasets were extracted from legacy data: a) point data composed of 53 soil samples; b) 30 m buffer around the soil samples, and soil map polygons excluding: c) 20 m; and d) 30 m from the boundaries of polygons. These four datasets were submitted to principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce multidimensionality. Each dataset derived a new one. Different combinations of...

Knowledge-based digital soil mapping for predicting soil properties in two representative watersheds Scientia Agricola
Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT: The estimation of soil physical and chemical properties at non-sampled areas is valuable information for land management, sustainability and water yield. This work aimed to model and map soil physical-chemical properties by means of knowledge-based digital soil mapping approach as a study case in two watersheds representative of different physiographical regions in Brazil. Two watersheds with contrasting soil-landscape features were studied regarding the spatial modeling and prediction of physical and chemical properties. Since the method uses only one value of soil property for each soil type, the way of choosing typical values as well the role of land use as a covariate in the prediction were tested. Mean prediction error (MPE) and root mean...

A hydropedological approach to a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range, southeastern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Pinto,Leandro Campos; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT: The Mantiqueira Range region is one of the most important headwaters in southeastern Brazil. In this context, the relationship between pedology and hydrology has been debated and analyzed in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science call hydropedology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hydropedological properties of a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, comparing two land-uses, native forest and pasture. The hydraulic conductivity results demonstrated that native forest (MFO) has a strong influence on this parameter, offering conditions for movement of water in the soil that are more adequate in this profile than in pasture....

Modeling and prediction of sulfuric acid digestion analyses data from PXRF spectrometry in tropical soils Scientia Agricola
Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Silva,Elen Alvarenga; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Pádua Junior,Alceu Linares; Gonçalves,Mariana Gabriele Marcolino; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Sulfuric acid digestion analyses (SAD) provide useful information to environmental studies, in terms of the geochemical balance of nutrients, parent material uniformity, nutrient reserves for perennial crops, and mineralogical composition of the soil clay fraction. Yet, these analyses are costly, time consuming, and generate chemical waste. This work aimed at predicting SAD results from portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry, which is proposed as a “green chemistry” alternative to the current SAD method. Soil samples developed from different parent materials were analyzed for soil texture and SAD, and scanned with pXRF. The SAD results were predicted from pXRF elemental analyses through simple linear regressions, stepwise multiple linear...

Aggregate breakdown and dispersion of soil samples amended with sugarcane vinasse Scientia Agricola
Ribeiro,Bruno Teixeira; Lima,José Maria de; Curi,Nilton; Oliveira,Geraldo César de.
Soil aggregation is a very complex issue related to important soil attributes and processes. The aggregate breakdown and dispersion of soil samples amended with sugarcane vinasse were evaluated using ultrasonic energy. Vinasse is an important byproduct of sugarcane industries, intensively applied to soils in Brazil as liquid fertilizer. Samples of two Oxisols and one Ultisol were used in this study. The physical and chemical characterization of soils was performed, and the 1 to 2 mm size aggregates (200 g) were packed in PVC columns (6.0 cm high and 4.0 cm internal diameter) and incubated with sugarcane vinasse under lab conditions for 1, 30 and 60 days. After incubation, aggregates were submitted to levels of ultrasonic energy, and the particle size...

Spatial prediction of soil properties in two contrasting physiographic regions in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT This study compared the performance of ordinary kriging (OK) and regression kriging (RK) to predict soil physical-chemical properties in topsoil (0-15 cm). Mean prediction of error and root mean square of prediction error were used to assess the prediction methods. Two watersheds with contrasting soil-landscape features were studied, for which the prediction methods were performed differently. A multiple linear stepwise regression model was performed with RK using digital terrain models (DTMs) and remote sensing images in order to choose the best auxiliary covariates. Different pedogenic factors and land uses control soil property distributions in each watershed, and soil properties often display contrasting scales of variability. Environmental...

Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
Solum depth and its spatial distribution play an important role in different types of environmental studies. Several approaches have been used for fitting quantitative relationships between soil properties and their environment in order to predict them spatially. This work aimed to present the steps required for solum depth spatial prediction from knowledge-based digital soil mapping, comparing the prediction to the conventional soil mapping approach through field validation, in a watershed located at Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Conventional soil mapping had aerial photo-interpretation as a basis. The knowledge-based digital soil mapping applied fuzzy logic and similarity vectors in an expert system. The knowledge-based...

Hybrid kriging methods for interpolating sparse river bathymetry point data Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Batista,Pedro Velloso Gomes; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Avalos,Fabio Arnaldo Pomar; Oliveira,Marcelo Silva de; Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Terrain models that represent riverbed topography are used for analyzing geomorphologic changes, calculating water storage capacity, and making hydrologic simulations. These models are generated by interpolating bathymetry points. River bathymetry is usually surveyed through cross-sections, which may lead to a sparse sampling pattern. Hybrid kriging methods, such as regression kriging (RK) and co-kriging (CK) employ the correlation with auxiliary predictors, as well as inter-variable correlation, to improve the predictions of the target variable. In this study, we use the orthogonal distance of a (x, y) point to the river centerline as a covariate for RK and CK. Given that riverbed elevation variability is abrupt transversely to the flow...

Pedotransfer functions for water retention in different soil classes from the center-southern Rio Grande do Sul State Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Santos,Walbert Júnior Reis dos; Curi,Nilton; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Araújo,Elias Frank de; Marques,João José.
Water retention in soil is used in many agronomic and environmental applications, but its direct measurement is time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, pedotransfer functions (PTFs) are alternatives to obtain this information faster and more economically. The objectives of this study were to generate and validate PTFs to estimate the water content at potentials of -33 kPa (field capacity) and -1500 kPa (permanent wilting point) for different soil classes from the central-south portion of Rio Grande do Sul State. The physical and chemical analyses database from soil surveys of the Celulose Riograndense Corp were used. The database is composed of particle size distribution (coarse and fine sand, silt and clay), soil organic matter, and water content data at...

Phosphorus transfer at a small catchment in southeastern Brazil: distributed modelling in different land use scenarios Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Bispo,Diêgo Faustolo Alves; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Marques,João José Granate de Sá e Melo; Bechmann,Marianne; Batista,Pedro Velloso Gomes; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Identifying and ranking nutrient loss risk areas are important steps towards integrated catchment management. This study aimed to apply the P index model at the Posses catchment, south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We applied the P index for the current land use at the Posses catchment and for two hypothetical scenarios: scenario 1, in which P fertilizer was applied to all land uses, except for native forests; and scenario 2, which considered the use of P fertilizer as in scenario 1, and that the Environmental Protection Areas referring to the riparian forests and springs were totally restored. Considering current land use, almost the whole catchment area (91.4%) displayed a low P loss risk. The highest P index was associated to croplands...

Xanthic- and Rhodic-Acrudoxes under cerrado vegetation: differential internal drainage and covarying micromorphological properties Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Skorupa,Alba Lucia Araujo; Tassinari,Diego; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Zinn,Yuri Lopes; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Soil internal drainage plays a major role in soil genesis, and it is mostly dependent on topography. However, the existence of sedimentary and meta-sedimentary rock strata with variable dip angle allows for strong differences in internal drainage for identical topographies, which result in a marked differentiation in the properties of overlain soils. This work aimed to investigate the micromorphology of soils formed from different dip angles of rock strata and their relationships to internal drainage, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Over horizontal strata, a Xanthic Acrudox lacking hematite and with blocky structure has developed. Over strata with 45° dip angle, strong drainage has resulted in intense desilication, forming a Rhodic Acrudox having...

Water erosion in soils under eucalyptus forest as affected by development stages and management systems Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Oliveira,Anna Hoffmann; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Klinke Neto,Gustavo; Araújo,Elias Frank.
The constant increasing of eucalyptus forest areas in Brazil requires an accurate monitoring of water erosion. The present study aimed to evaluate soil, nutrients and organic carbon losses occasioned by water erosion in eucalyptus planted forests (EPF) at different development stages (2, 3 and 7 years old). Soil erosion sediments were measured and sampled from standard erosion plots installed on Red Argisol-RA (Ultisol) and Haplic Cambisol-HC (Inceptisol). Soil loss decreased as the age of plants increased; at the beginning of plant development, the canopy barely covered the soil surface, exposing the soil to higher erosion at young EPF plantations. Furrow planting system was used in the Red Argisol area and caused higher soil losses (1.1 to 6.2 Mg ha-1...
