Following the mass mortality of Ostrea edulis, some experiments were conducted with O. chilensis broodstock and spat coming from Chiloe Island (Chile). Concurrently, spat of th same species produced in a hatchery was cultivated. After a small period of growth, these oysters died during the summer. Microscopic observations showed Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae in the oysters' tissue. For these reasons, Ostrea chilensis has not been retained to temporarily replace O. edulis. |

The main objectives of the Mollusc Pathology Network (REPAMO) are to prevent introductions or outbreaks of infectious agents, prevent spread within a farm and especially from one farm to another, to study ways of decreasing the impact of infectious agent and to monitor the development of these pathogens in order to guarantee the health status of oysters exchanged with our commercial partners. On the whole, REPAMO's activities have not changed and include: - monitoring the development of diseases that have to be reported to authorities and carrying out analyses to classify zones: bonamiosis and marteiliosis; - baseline monitoring of farmed and wild populations of bivalve molluscs; - studying cases of abnormal mortality events; - controlling mollusc... |

Shellfish culture is widely spread throughout the world and is the focus of an important activity either as a fishing of shellfish deposits or as a culture. The greatest production areas are Northern America with the United States and Canada. Asia with Japan and Korea, Europe with France, the Netherlands and Spain. At some point, each of these countries has had to face more or less important epizooties of variable durations. Each time, some studies have been carried out to try and find the origin of the disease, understand its evolution and look for solutions to the crisis it lead to. If, in most cases, these mortalities could be linked to the presence of some infectious agents, some phenomena still remained unexplained, the mortalities potentially being... |

The protozoan Bonamia ostreae (Ascetospora), a paasite of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, was purified by differential and isopycnic centrifugations. Mice of the strain Balb/c were immunized with purified parasites and hybridomas were prepared by fusion of immunized mouse splenocytes with the mouse myeloma cell line P3-X63-Ag8-653. From the fusion, 12 clones were isolated and saved. The resulting antibodies were characterized with a solid phase radioimmunoassay (RIA). Antibodies from 7 clones reacted only with B. ostreae and not with normal host tissue. Although some of the antibiodies identified. One of these antibodies (20B2-1B12) has an apparent association constant of ca 3 X 10(8) M-1 and bound to a number of different sites on the parasite. These... |
