Delmas, François; Heral, Maurice; Laplana, Ramon; Loubersac, Lionel; Prou, Jean.

Modelisation of oyster shell growth at 3 stations in the Patuxent river (Chesapeake Bay) ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Goulletquer, Philippe; Bacher, Cedric.
In oyster production area the determination of the stock, estimation of mortality and growth rates are determinant for knowledge of the fishery. Growth models can be used to predict the time to reach marketable size (76 mm in Chesapeake Bay). They are also important in term of management, when they can predict the future value of the stock (Askew, 1978). Oyster growth models can be built by analysing growth of natural oysters but absolute age is orten unknown. Many authors report growth data in Chesapeake Bay for suspended oyster culture. Unfortunalely, modelisation of the growth was not developed. In that study oyster, shell growth models have been established at three stations in the Patuxent river. Seasonal eITects on growth were integrated in the model

L'élevage conchylicole sur filière : revue bibliographique ArchiMer
Robert, Stephane; Prou, Jean; Le Moine, Olivier; Taillade, Sylvie.

The French Polynesian experience (Pearl oyster management, a manual) ArchiMer
Berthe, Franck; Prou, Jean.
French Polynesia is currently the world's largest producer of cultured black pearls with exports worth U5$150 millions annually. The activity has become of prime socioeconomic importance the archipelagos with strong support and control of the government. In the mid-1980s, mass mortality of the black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margarltlfera, has occurred in several atolls and challenged the development of pearl farming activity. Consequent studies and surveys have described several pathological conditions. None of those is considered to pose significant threat to the industry. However, they are monitored by a surveillance program in order to prevent and control emerging diseases. The government of French Polynesia has developed efforts to maintain high...

Dardignac, Marie-jose; Prou, Jean.
A retrospective study has been carried out on the possible relationships between the spat recruitment of mussels from the Pertuis Breton (France) and some environmental factors at different periods of the year. A significant negative correlation between recruitment and temperature has been found at two periods of the reproductive cycle; the first one coinciding with gametogenesis and the second one taking place just before spawning. But, no relation was noticed with temperature or salinity during the plantonic stage. These results are discussed. An interesting relationship was found between recruitment and "E.T.P.", an index expressing the drying power of air, taking into account temperature, wind, sunshine and moistness. Dessication appears to be...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Prou, Jean; Heral, Maurice.
Following the development of net protection techniques (1980), Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum farms develop in the ponds of Charente-Maritime. The county production for 1984 is about 100 tonnes, for a turnover of 4.5 Million Francs. To this day, farmers cultivating clams in ponds over a full cycle get better growth results during the first year. The size of 24 mm is obtained with a density of 200 individuals per square metre. However, due to the type of water input in ponds and to the limited primary production developing in the latter, it appears that biomasses in farms during the second year should not be greater than 0.5 to 1 kg per m² (30 to 50 clams per m²). Thus, the development of clam culture in marsh areas comes to a halt, as farmers are...

Raillard, Olivier; Razet, Daniel; Prou, Jean; Heral, Maurice.

Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The excess of farmed mollusc biomass in some French shellfish-farming basins (Marennes-Oléron basin, Isle of Ré, Isle of Bourgneuf) has been clearly highlighted. This manifests itself as a decrease of growth consistency of the molluscs and an increase in chronic mortality rates not linked to pathogenic agents. To this excess of farmed biomass are added the biomass of oysters or "wild" mussels or biomass linked to abandoned concessions.

Effect of the density of the culture and the depth on the seasonal variation of the biochemical composition of Crassostrea virginica in patuxent river (Chesapeake Bay) ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Heral, Maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Forget, Maïté; Bougrier, Serge; Razet, Daniel.
The project of cultivation of oyster has been designed to evaluate the growth rate, the mortality, the reproductive effort, production and biochemical composition of the oyster function of the density and the depth. This plan was intended: - to build model of growth rate, - to demonstrate the action of the different parameters on growth rate (temperature, food effect...), - to evaluate the density effect to see if the available food could be a limiting factor, - to estimate the effect of the depth joined to the impact of the high turbidity near the bot tom, - to detect the mortality related to the prevalence of diseases. The project began in July 1989 by dredging 20 000 small oysters at the mouth of the Patuxent River near Cove Point. Three experimental...

Retention efficiency in oyster Crassostrea gigas exposed to variable food quantity and quality ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Prou, Jean; Heral, Maurice; Bougrier, Serge.
Relative retention efficiency (Er%) of Crassostrea gigas was estimated in the laboratory with 7 diets consisting of algae and silt. Total particulates varied from 1.34 mg/l in natural sea water to 27.65 mg/l in natural sea water enriched with silt. It was also calculated from field experiment to get high concentration of seston up to 66 mg/l. It appeared that Crassostrea gigas did not adjust its retention according to the food quality and the gill porosity was controlled by the concentration of particulate matter. In low seston load (1.34 mg/l) the oyster showed no change in retention for particles larger than 3-4 µm (Equivalent Spherical Diameter, ESD) but at the highest concentration (66 mg/l) it could only retain with a maximum efficiency particles...
