EU Ecolabel for food and feed products – feasibility study Organic Eprints
Sengstschmid, Helmut; Sprong, Niels; Schmid, Otto; Stockenbrand, Nina; Stolz, Hanna; Spiller, Achim.
The environmental impacts of the production and processing of food, feed and drinks make up between 20% and 30% of the total environmental impacts of consumable goods in the EU. In the case of eutrophication (the accumulation of nutrients in water causing a reduction in oxygen availability) they account for as much as 58% of the total impacts. The EU Ecolabel is a voluntary scheme that forms part of overall EU policy to encourage more sustainable consumption and production. To date, the EU Ecolabel scheme has developed criteria for products in the non-food sector. The Regulation that governs the scheme (66/2010) aims to extend the EU Ecolabel into new product categories including food. However, the Regulation stipulates that before extending to the food...

Present Status of Organic Fruit Growing in Europe Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Häseli, Andreas; Schmid, Otto; Willer, Helga.
Organic fruit growing in Europe has experienced remarkable growth rates since the mid 1990's. Southern states, especially Italy, Spain and France have the largest land area with organic fruit, are also growing olives, citrus and chestnuts. Mainly increasing interest of supermarket chains is responsible for this buoyancy, but also the availability of better plant protection products e.g. granulosis virus and mating disruption against codling moth, and Neem oil against Rosy Apple Aphid. State subsidies varying from 600 to more than 1600 Euro /ha/y in the EU-countries (15) are less decisive for the conversion of top fruit production. Market share of organic table fruit is only 1 to 2 %, reaching 4 to 5 % in Switzerland. For Switzerland, we estimate a market...

The TP Organics Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) was finalised in December 2009. The purpose of the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) is to enable research, development and knowledge transfer that will deliver relevant outcomes – results that will contribute to the improvement of the organic sector and other low external input systems. The document has been developed through a dynamic consultative process that ran from 2008 to 2009. It involved a wide range of stakeholders who enthusiastically joined the effort to define organic research priorities. From December 2008 to February; the expert groups elaborated the first draft. The consultative process involved the active participation of many different countries. Consultation involved researchers,...

Mit Bio zu einer modernen nachhaltigen Landwirtschaft. Ein Diskussionsbeitrag zum Öko- oder Biolandbau 3.0 Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Plagge, Jan; Reese, Steffen; Fertl, Thomas; Schmid, Otto; Brändli, Urs; Bärtschi, Daniel; Pöpsel, Gregor; Hermanowski, Robert; Hohenester, Hans; Grabmann, Gerti.

Schmid, Otto; Espig, Franziska.
In the EU funded research project Ecropolis (www.ecropolis.eu), a comparative analysis of relevant sensory related requirements in regulations and standards for mainly processed organic products was made. A potential impact matrix of standards requirements on sensory properties of organic food has been made. The empirical verification of product qualities through consumers and sensory laboratory testing showed significant impacts for oil and salami, but no impact for apple, cookies, and tomato sauce.

Food Safety Debate and Development of Standards/Regulations for Organic Farming and Organic Food Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto.
There is an on-going debate, in which way Organic Food production systems do contribute to food safety. Only few comparative studies do exist. However Organic Farming developed a system approach which is mainly focussing on the process of production rather than on the end-product analysis. This approach, which is traditionally outlined in Standards and Regulations for Organic Farming, can bring benefits for food safety issues such as less contamination with chemicals, etc. But not all food safety areas are covered in standards/regulations, mainly because Food Safety is an issue of public health laws, which Organic Farming has to fulfil as well.

Herausforderungen für den Wissenstransfer in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Alfoeldi, Thomas; Weidmann, Gilles; Schmid, Otto; Niggli, Urs.

Anken, Thomas; Richner, Walter; Mäder, Paul; Schmid, Otto.
In a field trial of several years duration, an organic cultivation technique (BIO) was compared to ploughing, shallow tillage and no tillage. In the case of BIO, soil tillage was accomplished both by ploughing (prior to maize) and by mulch seeding (prior to cereals). The maize yields of the various techniques showed no significant differences in the case of slurry application. BIO-wheat yielded slightly lower in certain years, a fact attributable to low plant density. Wide spacing between rows (25 cm) and hoeing of the cereals enabled mulch seeding without weed-regulation problems in the case of BIO. Where slurry fertiliser was applied, the apparent nitrogen utilisation of the plants – despite application via an umbilical-hose spreader – was low,...

Grosse Chance verpasst – Biowein-Regelung für Europa Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Weibel, Franco.
