The effect of dietary phosphatidylcholine in postlarval penaeid shrimp: 2. Preliminary culture results OMA
Tackaert, W.; Camara, M.R.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although dietary phospholipids (PL) and particularly phosphatidylcholine (PC) have been found to enhance growth and survival in penaeid shrimp, precise requirements have yet to be established. Substantially variable responses of feeding PL have been noticed in crustaceans in relation to the growth stage of the animals and the composition of the other dietary ingredients. In several shrimp feeding trials phospholipids of unspecified composition, have been used, such as crude lecithin, as a result of which it is difficult to draw conclusions with regard to the optimal levels/types of dietary PL required by penaeid shrimp. This paper is part of a broad study which aims to assess the dietary effect of different levels/types of purified PL in marine fish and...

Osmotic stress resistance as a quality diagnostic for penaeid postlarvae OMA
Rees, J.F.; Curé, K.; Piyatiratitivorakul, S.; Menasveta, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL-5) were reared for 10 days on Artemia nauplii enriched with various levels (2.65, 5.30, 12.60, 22.35 and 31.20 mg/g DW) of (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). On day 5 and 10, their resistance to osmotic shocks (transfer from 30 ppt to 0, 5, and 10 ppt diluted seawater) was analyzed. After 5 days, postlarvae fed Artemia containing 12.6 mg/g (n-3)HUFA or more had a significantly higher resistance (p<0.05) than controls. Five days later, no significant difference could be detected among the treatments. A positive correlation was found between the stress resistance of PL-10 and the survival recorded five days later in each tank (p<0.02). It is concluded that...

Effect of a dietary phospholipid supplementation on growth and fatty acid composition of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) juveniles from weaning onwards OMA
Geurden, I.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Two 40-day feeding trials using extruded diets were conducted to assess the effect of a dietary phospholipid (PL) supplementation on growth, survival and fatty acid composition of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) from weaning onwards. Two dietary treatments (FO and PL) were tested; both had an identical extruded basis (92,5% total diet weight) coated with a different lipid fraction (7,5% total diet weight). Diet PL contained 2% egg yolk PL (69% pure). In diet FO the PL was replaced by hydrogenated coconut oil. The isolipidic diets contained an equal amount of fish oil ethyl esters providing 1,6% (% diet weight) of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). A diet water...

Growth response of penaeid postlarvae to dry diets containing Artemia biomass meal OMA
Abelin, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
The results are presented of a feeding experiment conducted with post-larvae of Penaeus monodon and P. vannamei using formulated dry feeds in which Artemia biomass was incorporated. The total and partial substitution for Artemia nauplii were evaluated. Survival rates in the experiment were not very high, indicating that nutritionally balance dry diets do not support the same growth as Artemia nauplii, which must contain a particular ingredient yet to be identified

Increasing cyst yields in Artemia culture ponds in Vietnam: the multicycle system OMA
Baert, P.; Anh, N.T.N.; Quynh, V.D.; Hoa, N.V.; Sorgeloos, P..
In this study, one-cycle and multi-cycle culture systems for Artemia in seasonal salt ponds are compared. In one-cycle systems, Artemia is inoculated only once per season, while in multi-cycle systems ponds are drained and re-stocked several times per season. In Vietnam, three-cycle systems gave significantly higher cyst yields than did the one-cycle system. However, after two cycles, systems were not significantly different. Food limitation probably caused the steady decline in cyst yields, as observed in the one-cycle ponds. In these ponds, females have smaller broods (from the second cycle onwards) and during the last cycle the number of adult females is lower than in multi-cycle ponds.

Live food mediated vitamin C transfer to Dicentrarchus labraxand Clarias gariepinus OMA
Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Dhert, Ph.; Pector, R.; Mai Soni, A.F.; Nelis, H.; Ollevier, F.P.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Live food enrichment techniques, using formulated diets and emulsions for improving the nutritional quality of Brachionus and Artemia , were studied as a tool for transferring ascorbic acid (AA) to fish larvae. Artemia nauplii enriched for 24h with an experimental emulsion containing 20% HUFA and 0%, 10% and 20% ascorbyl palmitate (AP) were administered to catfish larvae in a 20-day feeding trial. Survival was not affected by the dietary AA, but from day 7 onwards a significantly positive effect of supplemental AA on growth was demonstrated. At the end of the experiment the 20% AP group weighed 30% more than the control (0% AP), i.e. 9.5 and 6.3mg DW, respectively. Evaluation of the physiological...

Three simple culture devices for aquatic invertebrates and fish larvae with continuous recirculation of the medium OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Persoone, G..
The 3 culturing devices described are based on the principle of the classic air-water lift, which facilitates continuous recirculation and aeration of the cultivation medium. The first device is a "circulation cylinder", convenient for hatching eggs of the brine shrimp Artemia salina and for culturing algae and protozoans. In the second device, an internal basket (i.e., a glass cylinder with plankton-gauze bottom) prevents the animals being carried along in the air-water lift. The third device, analogous to the second, is provided with a lateral waste-drain and a water collector with siphon, which empties regularly into the main culture vessel. The second and third devices proved to be excellent for the cultivation of a variety of...

Enrichment of live food with essential fatty acids and vitamin C: effects on milkfish (Chanos chanos) larval performance OMA
Gapasin, R.S.J.; Bombeo, R.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Nelis, H.J..
The effects of essential fatty acids (EFA) and vitamin C-enriched live food on growth, survival, resistance to salinity stress and incidence of deformity in milkfish larvae reared in tanks were investigated. Larvae were either fed rotifers cultured on Chlorella sp. and newly hatched Artemia nauplii (control), highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)-enriched rotifers and Artemia nauplii or HUFA + vitamin C-enriched rotifers and Artemia nauplii. Milkfish growth in outdoor nursery ponds was also assessed to compare with growth in indoor tanks. Milkfish fed rotifers/Artemia enriched with HUFA (32-48 mg dry weight, DW) or HUFA + vitamin C (33-45 mg DW) exhibited...

International study on Artemia : LX. Allozyme data suggest that a new Artemia population in southern Chile (50° 29' S; 73° 45' W) is A. persimilis OMA
Gajardo, G.; Mercado, C.; Beardmore, J.A.; Sorgeloos, P..
An Artemia population from a site recently described in Chile and located in a semi-arid and humid hydrographical zone (Torres del Paine National Park), was electrophoretically characterized and cross-bred (followed through F3) to reference samples of A. franciscana (San Francisco Bay, California, USA) and A. persimilis (Buenos Aires, Argentina), which are the species most likely to be found in Chile. The population exhibited high levels of genetic variability as judged by the percentage of polymorphic loci (P=53.3), mean number of alleles per locus (n=2.2) and mean heterozygosity (H=0.176). Contributions towards a specific DHA enrichment in the live food Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia sp. OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Sorgeloos, P.; Devresse, B..
This paper reports on enrichment techniques oriented towards a specific DHA accumulation in the live prey Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia sp. The product used in these experiments (DHA7) is an experimental emulsion with a DHA/EPA ratio 6.7:1. Rotifers enriched with this pure DHA7 emulsion contained up to 69 mg/g DW DHA and a DHA/EPA ratio of 1.6. The DHA/EPA ration could be increased to a much higher level by different enrichment techniques. Dilution of the DHA7 emulsion with coconut oil prior to enrichment also had a beneficial effect on the DHA/EPA ratio of the rotifers. Using a mixture DHA7/coconut oil 3:7 the DHA/EPA ratio could be raised to 4.9. In Artemia DHA levels were slightly influenced...

International study on Artemia: 57. Morphological and molecular characters suggest conspecificity of all bisexual European and North African Artemia populations OMA
Triantaphyllidis, G.; Criel, G.R.J.; Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Thomas, K.M.; Peleman, J.; Beardmore, J.A.; Sorgeloos, P..
A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of bisexual Artemia populations revealed that populations representing the species A. franciscana, A. persimilis, A. urmiana, A. sinica and a recently described species from Kazakhstan have a pair of spine-like outgrowths at the basal parts of their penes, whereas populations from Southern Europe and North Africa (i.e. Mediterranean populations) lack these spine-like outgrowths. Allozyme and DNA polymorphisms, detected by allozyme starch gel electrophoresis and AFLP fingerprinting, respectively, suggested conspecificity of the studied populations from the broader Mediterranean basin. Male specimens from the collection of the Natural History Museum of London (UK) of the extinct...

Effect of vitamin C incorporation in live food on the larviculture success of aquaculture species OMA
Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A study was undertaken to upgrade the levels of vitamin C in Artemia and Brachionus through bioencapsulation and to investigate in this way the requirements for ascorbic acid (AA) during larviculture of fish and prawn. Ascorbyl palmitate (AP) was used as the vit C source because of its stable and lipophylic characteristics which allowed its incorporation in booster emulsions and its readily conversion into AA by Brachionus and Artemia . Under standard conditions very high levels of AA could be incorporated into the Artemia nauplii: supplementation of the enrichment emulsion with 20% AP (w/w) increased the AA-content up to 2000 ppm after 24h enrichment. Also in...

The effect of lipid supplementation on growth and fatty acid composition of Tapes philippinarum spat OMA
Caers, M.; Coutteau, P.; Lombeida, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The present study investigated the possible use of emulsions as an artificial lipid supplement to live algae for seed of the Manila clam Tapes philippinarum. The uptake and assimilation of an emulsion, rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and fed at concentrations of 20 and 40% of the algal dry weight, were verified analytically by fatty acid analysis of the animals and their diets. Dietary requirements for n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) were examined by supplementing Dunaliella tertiolecta, which contains no polyunsaturated fatty acids longer than 18:3n-3 and Tetraselmis suecica, which contains EPA but only trace amounts of DHA. An algal...

An intensive approach to Atlantic halibut fry production OMA
Holmefjord, I.; Gulbrandsen, J.; Lein, I.; Refstie, T.; Léger, P.; Harboe, T.; Huse, I.; Sorgeloos, P.; Bolla, S.; Olsen, Y.; Reitan, K.I.; Vadstein, O.; Øie, G.; Danielsberg, A..
The larval stage is regarded to be the main bottleneck of halibut production. Halibut eggs were obtained from captive broodstock both by stripping and by natural spawning. Artificial photoperiods were used to increase the total spawning season. Yolk sac larvae are presently produced either in small stagnant units or in large flow through systems. A major consideration is to avoid stress of the larvae, caused by mechanical disturbances of the larvae and by high bacterial load or high ammonia levels in the water. The experimentation showed that halibut larvae began to ingest algae earlier than rotifers Brachionus sp. Supplementation of algae to first feeding tanks resulted in enhanced survival and growth rate of the larvae. Both rotifers...

Preliminary data on the heritability of some quantitative characteristics in Artemia OMA
Tackaert, W.; Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A standard method has been developed to produce F1-generation cysts from different zygogenetic strains and their cross-breeds. The F1 cysts were used to determine the quantitative heritability of the following characteristics: cyst hatchability, cyst diameter, larval growth, and temperature resistance of the freshly-hatched nauplii.Data are given for cysts produced from nine strains and seven cross-breeds. Important differences for all characteristics studied were noted between the cross-bred and the parental strains.

International study on Artemia: 19. Hatching data for ten commercial sources of brine shrimp cysts and re-evaluation of the "hatching efficiency" concept OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A comparative hatching study has been carried out with reference Artemia cysts as well as cysts from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, the People' s Republic of China, the Philippines and the USA. Hatching rate, percentage and efficiency vary considerably from one cyst source to another. These hatching criteria are, however, not strainspecific since significant variation is found among cyst batches from the same geographical origin. The limitations of the "hatching efficiency" concept are discussed and a new criterion "hatching output", i.e. the biomass of nauplii expressed in mg dry weight produced per gram cyst product, is proposed for evaluation of the hatching quality of Artemia cyst brands. The...
