The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of production disease related indicators on 192 organic dairy farms in Germany, Spain, France and Sweden. The following indicators were used: raised somatic cell count (>100,000 cells/ml, subclinical mastitis), high fat/protein ratio (risk of ketosis), low milk fat (risk of acidosis), prolonged calving interval, clinical lameness, and mortalities of calves and cows. Prevalence of the assessed indicators varied widely between farms and countries. The median prevalence (interquartile range) were 51.3% (15.4) for subclinical mastitis, 10% (7.7) for risk of ketosis, 3.2% (4.7) for risk of acidosis, 42% (20.7) for prolonged calving interval, and 14.2% (20.4) for clinical lameness. The incidence risk of... |

A high level of animal health is demanded by an increasing number of consumers and expected to be realised especially from organic livestock farming. Furthermore, animal health can be used as an indicator for sustainability within the farm system. In a current study on 20 organic sow herds, conducted to assess the effects of the implementation of animal health plans, constraints which limit the possibilities of appropriate diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures are evaluated. Previous results show a high variability with regard to the prevalence of production diseases, the availability of relevant resources like labour time or investments, the perception of diseases by farmers, and the expertise and management skills to deal with diseases. In order... |

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of a restriction to home-grown feedstuffs and abstinence from supplementation with synthetic amino acids (AA), as ideal objectives in organic pig production according to the IFOAM standards, on growth performance and carcass characteristics. One hundred individually housed pigs were allocated to four dietary treatments and fed from growing through finishing to compare three organic barley/wheat-based diets with an isocaloric conventional diet supplemented with synthetic AA. Protein sources in the organic treatments were either faba beans, supplemented with potato protein to the same AA level as the control diet (FA+PO), peas and lupines (PE+LU) or faba beans and lupines (FA+LU), both without further... |

Due to the outgoing transitional arrangements for the use of conventional protein sources for monogastric animals in organic livestock farming, alternatives are urgently needed. The aim of this study was to investigate the suitability of the leaf mass of clover-like legumes in the diet of pigs. Therefore the yields of digestible protein per hectare of the investigated plant samples are compared to that of faba beans, lupines and peas as established organic protein sources. The yields of digestible crude protein per hectare of the clover-like legumes are higher than that of faba beans and peas. Although the faba beans and peas have some higher crude protein digestibility of about 80%, the examined plant samples are due to the higher content of protein in... |

A high level of animal health is demanded by an increasing number of consumers and expected to be realised especially in organic farming. In a study on 20 organic sow herds, conducted to assess the effects of the implementation of animal health plans, the status quo of animal health of sows and piglets and possible constraints which limit the possibilities of appropriate diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures were assessed. The on-farm assessment brought up a high variability among the farms with regard to standard livestock data and the occurrence of weak-points in hygienic, nutritional and animal health management. Recommendations were elaborated together with the veterinarian and the advisory service. However, in the first year after being given... |

Production diseases (PDs) emerge from complex interactions between a multitude of variables. In order to prevent and control PDs, measures need to be taken that are likely to be effective in the farm context. In this study, an impact analysis was performed on 60 organic dairy farms in Germany to assess the relationships between 13 system variables and to determine factors with a large impact on PDs. Direct impacts were estimated during a round-table discussion between farmer, veterinarian and advisor using an impact matrix. Indirect impacts were computed and evaluated by graph analysis. Across farms, feeding, hygiene, and treatment had the highest direct impact on PDs, whereas knowledge and skills, herd health monitoring, and dry cow management were... |

Organic farming is based on the four principles health, ecology, fairness and care, and is governed by EU regulation 834/2007. The question leading to this research was whether these provisions are sufficient to ensure good animal health. Prevalences of production diseases in 192 organic dairy farms in France, Germany, Spain and Sweden were assessed based on routinely collected herd data and locomotion scoring. Herd-level indicators were determined for udder health, metabolism, reproduction and lameness. The median (min - max) prevalence of subclinical mastitis was 51.3% (18.9 - 94.2) and 14.2% (0 - 79.2) of the animals were lame. Prevalence of subclinical ketosis was 10% (0 - 45) and 42% (4.3 - 90.5) of the animals had a prolonged calving interval.... |

Conclusions: Organic farming has committed itself to outperforming conventional farming in a number of areas including animal health. However, organic standards based on minimum requirements do not automatically lead to a high status of animal health that exceeds the level in conventional production and thus, does not in all respects meet consumers’ expectations. Improvements are crucial to support and strengthen consumers’ confidence and their willingness to pay premium prices. These are urgently needed to cover the higher production costs in organic farming and thus ensure a viable organic dairy production. According to previous knowledge, assessments of the quality of organic milk provides inconsistent results and often falls short of expectations as... |

Existing data on animal health and welfare in organic livestock production systems in the European Community countries are reviewed in the light of the demands and challenges of the recently implemented EU regulation on organic livestock production. The main conclusions and recommendations of a three-year networking project on organic livestock production are summarised and the future challenges to organic livestock production in terms of welfare and health management are discussed. The authors conclude that, whilst the available data are limited and the implementation of the EC regulation is relatively recent, there is little evidence to suggest that organic livestock management causes major threats to animal health and welfare in comparison with... |
