This is a first-rate, beautifully produced book, the contents and presentation of which are an example to all local flora writers. I use the phrase ‘local flora’ with hesitation; Arkansas is larger than the whole of England by 3000sq. miles I Introductory chapters, brief yet to the point, explain ferns and allied plants to the naturalist and layman; an illustrated glossary is a plus; pteridophyte distribution and ecology, discussed naturally in an Arkansas context, make interesting reading. A well illustrated key is given to the 32 genera included. The bulk of the book is given to descriptions of these genera, keys to the 78 species found in Arkansas, and clear descriptions with a full page line-drawing of each species by one of the leading botanical... |

During the greater part of the Palaeogene the Tremp Basin was an area which underwent rapid subsidence as compared with the axial zone of the Pyrenees to the north, and the Ebro Massif to the south. As a result the sea occupied this area for a long time and deposition of the Ager Formation took place during the Late Paleocene and Early Eocene in a bay forming an appendix of the Atlantic Ocean. At the maximum of the transgression probably a connection with the Tethys existed. During this entire development the Tremp Basin was tectonically separated from the more southerly Ager Basin by the Montsech High which underwent much less subsidence. The southern side of the Tremp Basin, under the influence of this high, subsided less rapidly than the central part.... |

INTRODUCTION Flatworms living as commensals on parasitic copepods from marine fishes were known already as- early as 1835, when Johnston described Udonella caligorum from Caligus spec., a parasite of Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.). Since then a number of similar genera and species have been described, but none of these is clearly different from Udonella caligorum, as far as can be judged from the descriptions. Therefore only one valid species is recognized by most modern authors (Price, 1938; Sproston, 1946; Ivanov, 1952b). Calinella ophiodontis Kay, 1945, a species not listed by these authors, probably is another synonym to be added to the long list, but Kay's material should be re-examined before a final decision can be made. In Yamaguti's compilation... |

The present bibliography on pelagic Tunicates has been compiled over a period of 4 years, mainly by the first author. It is meant, not as an official publication, but as a working aid for students of pelagic Tunicates. It comprises about 1300-1400 different titles of books and articles. For obvious reasons the mere listing of all those titles in alphabetical order would be impractical for specialized demands. Splitting this list in as many subheadings as possible in a way like the Zoological Record would be ideal. However, many articles and books are difficult to place under one heading; the same titles would have to be mentioned under a number of different headings. With as many headings as possible this would mean a multiplication of the 1300-1400 titles... |

Amsinckia menziesii (Lehm.) Nels. & Macbr., a species occurring in western North America on moist slopes and fields, open valley floors and hillsides, has been found very rarely in 5 places of our country (Gorinchem 1913, Renesse 1952 and 1958, Wageningen 1963, Blauwkapel 1963, Rockanje 1963). In an oats crop naar Venray and Broekhuizen it was found again and collected in 1964. The ecology of this species seems to be the same as that of Lycopsis arvensis L. subsp. arvensis. |

Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on Datronia were carried out. Phylogeny based on ITS, nLSU and RBP2 regions revealed that Datronia in current sense includes species belonging to three distantly related clades in polypores. The Datronia in a restricted sense is proposed for the clade including the type species D. mollis and D. stereoides. Neodatronia gen. nov. was proposed for two new resupinate species, N. gaoligongensis and N. sinensis. Species of Neodatronia differ from Datronia s.s. by their resupinate basidiomes, moderately to frequently branched skeletal hyphae in subiculum. Datroniella gen. nov., typified by D. scutellata was proposed for species in the other clade. Four new species of Datroniella, D. melanocarpa, D. subtropica, D. tibetica and D.... |

The cephalosomic appendages, including the rostrum, are redescribed in the bathypelagic harpacticoid Aegisthus mucronatus Giesbrecht, 1891 (Aegisthidae). Profound sexual dimorphism was found in all cephalosomic appendages. For the first time reference is made to the presence of a mandible in the male and figures are given for the male maxillula. Distinct sexual differences are also observed in the structure of the labrum and the labium. The structure and ornamentation of the male antennula clearly shows that the Aegisthidae belong to the monophyletic group Cervinioidea, including also the Rotundiclipeidae and Cerviniidae. Brief comments are made on the nature of the first pedigerous somite, the structure of the anal somite and of the caudal rami. The... |

With the kind permission of the Director of the Leiden Museum and the able assistance of Mr. H. C. BLÖTE, to whom I am much indebted for his services; some hundreds of specimens of undetermined Sumatran Carabidae have, during the past few months, been sent to me for indentification. Among these I have found examples of one new genus and ten new species, which are described in the succeeding pages. Some of these species were represented only in the Leiden Museum, but of others I found specimens in the collection of the F. M. S. Museum, Kuala Lumpur, while my own collection contained examples of four of them. Some of the type specimens are in the Leiden Museum, some in the British Museum, and some in my collection, as mentioned at the close of the respective... |

The family Lemnaceae is divided into 2 subfamilies, Lemnoideae with the genera Spirodela and Lemna — the latter with 2 subgenera, Lemna and Staurogeton — and Wolffioideae with the genera Wolffia, Wolffiopsis, Wolffiella, and Pseudowolffia, the last two being new and based on former infrageneric taxa. All these taxa are described, and their types indicated; keys are provided for their distinction. Recognized species names are listed with their synonyms, a few being newly reduced. There are 5 new specific combinations. A list of invalid and dubious names is added. The excluded names are listed separately. An explanatory glossary is given of the terminology used in the descriptions, and is illustrated by some diagrams (fig. 1). |

As one of the fundamental units of ecology and biogeography, the geographic distribution of the endemic and threatened ebony leaf monkey Trachypithecus auratus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1812) on the islands of Java, Bali, and Lombok (Indonesia) has been assessed. All localities where the species has been collected are listed, and forty-two areas (each in itself consisting of numerous smaller sites) where the species has been recorded are discussed. The species occurs in a large variety of forest types, including mangrove, beach, and freshwater swamp forest; everwet lowland and hill forest; dry decidious forest; montane forest up to 3,000 – 3,500 m a.s.l.; and in some forest plantations (teak Tectona grandis, rasamala Altingia excelsa, acacia Acacia spp).... |

The geomorphology of western Galicia is reconsidered in the light of Nonn's monograph (1966), and an envelope map of the relief, as defined by Stearns (1967) and Pannekoek (1967), and an interpretation of the latter are also presented. The envelope map shows more clearly than an ordinary contour map that the major relief features are not controlled by the lineations of the Hercynian basement but by late- or post-Hercynian faults, some of which may have been reactivated in Tertiary times. Concerning the geomorphological evolution, the author agrees with most of Nonn's conclusions, although there is some divergence on minor points. The isolated mountain massifs, capped by remnants of older pediplains, already existed in Upper Miocene times. The depressions... |

Platycheirus aurolateralis, a second sibling of P. scutatus, new for the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Recently, two new species were described in the Platycheirus scutatus (Meigen, 1822) complex: P. aurolateralis Stubbs, 2002 and P. speighti Doczkal, Stuke & Goeldlin de Tiefenau, 2002. Re-examination of the material of P. splendidus revealed that P. aurolateralis also occurs in the Netherlands. The Dutch records of both P. aurolateralis and P. splendidus are summarised in a table and a distribution map. A key is provided for the males of all four species of the Platycheirus scutatus complex. The differences between the males are also summarised in a table. The two specimens of P. splendidus recorded from France and Belgium (Smit 2001) are... |

The editor has received the first and second fascicle of a treatise of the vascular plants of West Virginia. According to the preface this flora, when complete, will present descriptions, illustrations, geographical data and other information, particularly of local interest for the approximately 2000 species found growing without cultivation in that State. The first part contains the Pteridophyta, Gymnospermae, and Monocotyledoneae, the second part the Dicotyledoneae, p.p. (Saururaceae-Leguminosae). Keys are given for genera and species. The rather short descriptions are completed by many for the greater part original line drawings. Nomenclature and sequence are those of the 8th edition of Gray’s Manual, 1950, by M. L. Fernald. |
