Evaluation of the botanical origin of commercial dry bee pollen load batches using pollen analysis: a proposal for technical standardization Anais da ABC (AABC)
Barth,Ortrud M.; Freitas,Alex S.; Oliveira,Érika S.; Silva,Rosana A.; Maester,Fernanda M.; Andrella,Raquel R.S.; Cardozo,Gina M.B.Q..
High quality of bee pollen for commercial purpose is required. In order to attend the consumer with the best identification of the botanical and floral origin of the product, 25 bee pollen batches were investigated using two techniques of pollen grain preparation. The first started to identify pollen loads of different colors in two grams of each well mixed batch, and the second to identify pollen grains in a pool made of all the pollen loads comprised in two grams. The best result was obtained by this last technique, when a pollen grain suspension was dropped on a microscope slide and circa 500 pollen grains were counted per sample. This analysis resulted in the recognition of monofloral and bifloral pollen batches, while the use of the first technique...

Bacterial handling under the influence of non-uniform electric fields: dielectrophoretic and electrohydrodynamic effects Anais da ABC (AABC)
Fernádez-Morales,Flavio H.; Duarte,Julio E.; Samitier-Martí,Josep.
This paper describes the modeling and experimental verification of a castellated microelectrode array intended tohandle biocells, based on common dielectrophoresis. The proposed microsystem was developed employing platinumelectrodes deposited by lift-off, silicon micromachining, and photoresin patterning techniques. Having fabricated the microdevice it was tested employing Escherichia coli as bioparticle model. Positive dielectrophoresis could be verified with the selected cells for frequencies above 100 kHz, and electrohydrodynamic effects were observed as the dominant phenomena when working at lower frequencies. As a result, negative dielectrophoresis could not be observed because its occurrence overlaps with electrohydrodynamic effects; i.e. the viscous...

The influence of bromazepam on cortical power distribution Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sampaio,Isabel; Puga,Fernanda; Veiga,Heloisa; Cagy,Mauricio; Piedade,Roberto; Ribeiro,Pedro.
The EEG has been widely employed in the assessment of electrophysiological changes induced by distinct medications. Its sensibility in detecting alterations produced by a specific substance may be enhanced by methods of quantitative analyses (qEEG). The present study aimed at investigating the modulatory effects of bromazepam on brain dynamics. The effects of bromazepam (3mg) on EEG power distribution were tested in 10 healthy individuals, in a double-blind experiment. The electrophysiological measure was analyzed across experimental conditions, moments, and electrodes, in the delta, theta, alpha and beta frequency bands separately. A significant decrease of relative power was observed in delta and theta (main effect of condition). No interactions were...

Plasma membranes from insect midgut cells Anais da ABC (AABC)
Terra,Walter R.; Costa,Rita H.; Ferreira,Clélia.
Plasma membranes from insect midgut cells are separated into apical and basolateral domains. The apical domain is usually modified into microvilli with a molecular structure similar to other animals. Nevertheless, the microvillar structure should differ in some insects to permit the traffic inside them of secretory vesicles that may budd laterally or pinch-off from the tips of microvilli. Other microvillar modifications are associated with proton-pumping or with the interplay with an ensheathing lipid membrane (the perimicrovilllar membrane) observed in the midgut cells of hemipterans (aphids and bugs). The perimicrovillar membranes are thought to be involved in amino acid absorption from diluted diets. The microvillar and perimicrovillar membranes have...

The impacts of land use changes in the mercury flux in the Madeira River, Western Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lacerda,Luiz D.; Bastos,Wanderley R.; Almeida,Marcelo D..
Changes in hydrochemistry and Hg distribution in the Madeira River from Porto Velho to the confluence with the Amazon River were studied in two cruises in 1997 and 2002. Water conductivity was similar in both periods, but the pH was significantly higher in 2002, in particular along the middle reaches of the river. Total suspended matter concentrations also increased from 1997 to 2002 along the same river portion, which is a result of forest conversion to other land uses, in particular pastures and agriculture accelerated during the interval between the cruises. Dissolved Hg concentrations were similar along the river in both cruises, but particulate Hg concentrations increased significantly along the middle portion of the river, although the suspended...

Preparation and evaluation of a biomimetic scaffold with porosity gradients in vitro Anais da ABC (AABC)
Wang,Qianbin; Wang,Qiguang; Wan,Changxiu.
A novel biodegradable scaffold based on mimetic a natural bone tissue morphology with a porosity gradient structure was prepared in this paper. The result of surface morphology indicated that a graded porous structure was formed in the fabricated scaffold, where the dense layer (0%) was connected with the most porous layer (60%) by a middling porous layer (30%). To evaluate the degradability, graded porous scaffolds compared with homogeneous scaffolds were placed into a Tris-HCl buffer solution (pH = 7.4) for 28 days. It was found that both scaffolds presented the same degradation trend, and the graded porous structure did not change the original degradability of the scaffold. Moreover, the compressive strength of the graded porous scaffold was better than...

Action of plant proteinase inhibitors on enzymes of physiopathological importance Anais da ABC (AABC)
Oliva,Maria Luiza V.; Sampaio,Misako U..
Obtained from leguminous seeds, various plant proteins inhibit animal proteinases, including human, and can be considered for the development of compounds with biological activity. Inhibitors from the Bowman-Birk and plant Kunitz-type family have been characterized by proteinase specificity, primary structure and reactive site. Our group mostly studies the genus Bauhinia, mainly the species bauhinioides, rufa, ungulata and variegata. In some species, more than one inhibitor was characterized, exhibiting different properties. Although proteins from this group share high structural similarity, they present differences in proteinase inhibition, explored in studies using diverse biological models.

Metacercariae of Strigeidae Parasitizing Amphibians of the Chaco Region in Argentina Anais da ABC (AABC)
HAMANN,MONIKA I.; FERNÁNDEZ,MARÍA V.; GONZÁLEZ,CYNTHYA E..
Abstract: The goal of the present study was to analyze the metacercariae found in adult amphibians collected in the Argentinean Chaco region. A total of 194 frogs, Leptodactylus chaquensis, Leptodactylus latinasus, and Lepidobatrachus laevis was examined for digeneans. Three different larval trematodes of the genus Strigea (Digenea, Strigeidae) were found infecting the liver, mesentery, body cavity, and muscle of frogs. These metacercariae are described and illustrated for the first time and provide new information on the composition of metacercariae in amphibians, thus contributing to the knowledge of larval trematodes biodiversity in the Neotropical region. We also present new information on the morphology and morphometry of strigeid metacercariae.

Are sun- and shade-type anatomy required for the acclimation of Neoregelia cruenta? Anais da ABC (AABC)
REINERT,FERNANDA; LEAL-COSTA,MARCOS V.; JUNQUEIRA,NICIA E.; TAVARES,ELIANA S..
Sun and shade plants are often discriminated by a number of sun- and shade-type anatomies. Nonetheless, we propose that among tank-bromeliads, changes in rosette architecture satisfy the requirements for coping with contrasting light levels. The tank-bromeliad Neoregelia cruenta naturally colonises sub-habitats ranging from full exposure to direct sunlight, to shaded environments in sand ridge plains. We quantified anatomical and morphological traits of leaves and rosettes of N. cruenta grown under sun and shade conditions. Cells with undulated lateral walls within the water parenchyma are for the first time described for the family. Under high light, leaf blades were wider, shorter, and yellowish. The rosette diameter of sun plants was less than half that...

Antibiotic activity of Plectranthus ornatus Codd., a Traditional Medicinal Plant Anais da ABC (AABC)
NASCIMENTO,FERNANDA R.; ALBUQUERQUE,KAMYLLA R.S.; OLIVEIRA,MARCOS R.; PIZZIOLO,VIRGINIA R.; BRASILEIRO,BEATRIZ G.; DIAZ,GASPAR; DIAZ,MARISA A.N..
ABSTRACT The dichloromethane extract of Plectranthus ornatus Codd., a tradicional medicinal plant, showed antibiotic activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.4 mg.mL-1 and 100 percent of biofilm inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animals with mastitis infections. Based on these antibacterial activities, in addition to ethnopharmacological reports from healing men and farmers in Brazil, an herbal soap was produced from this active extract and was tested both in vitro and in vivo. In vivo assays conducted on these herbal soaps led to results similar to those previously conducted with the active extract. These results indicated the great potential of this plant for use as an excipient by preparing herbal...

Spectral properties and conformal type of surfaces Anais da ABC (AABC)
CASTILLON,PHILIPPE.
In this short note, we announce a result relating the geometry of a riemannian surface to the positivity of some operators on this surface (the operators considered here are of the form surface Laplacian plus a scalar multiple of the curvature function). In particular we obtain a theorem "à la Huber'': under a spectral hypothesis we prove that the surface is conformally equivalent to a Riemann surface with a finite number of points removed. This problem has its origin in the study of stable minimal surfaces.

ABSTRACT The impacts of white-rot fungi on altering wood chemistry have been studied mostly in vitro. However, in vivo approaches may enable better assessment of the nature of interactions between saprotrophic fungi and host tree in nature. Hence, decayed and sound wood samples were collected from a naturally infected tree (Carpinus betulus L.). Fruiting bodies of the white rot fungus Trametes versicolor grown on the same tree were identified using rDNA ITS sequencing. Chemical compositions (cellulose and lignin) of both sound and infected wood were studied. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to collect spectra of decayed and un-decayed wood samples. The results of chemical compositions indicated that T. versicolor reduced cellulose and lignin in similar...

Natural occurrence of hexavalent chromium in a sedimentary aquifer in Urânia, State of São Paulo, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bourotte,Christine; Bertolo,Reginaldo; Almodovar,Marta; Hirata,Ricardo.
Anomalous concentrations of hexavalent chromium have been detected in ground-water of the Adamantina Aquifer inat least 54 municipalities located in the northwestern region of the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil, occasionallyexceeding the permitted limit for human consumption (0.05 mg.L-1). An investigation was conducted in the municipality of Urânia, where the highest concentrations of chromium were detected regionally. It was defined that the originof this contamination is natural, since high concentrations of chromium were detected in aquifer sandstones (averageof 221 ppm) and also in pyroxenes (6000 ppm), one of the main heavy minerals found in the sediments. Besides, noother possible diffuse or point sources of contamination were observed in the...

Sampling procedures for inventory of commercial volume tree species in Amazon Forest Anais da ABC (AABC)
NETTO,SYLVIO P.; PELISSARI,ALLAN L.; CYSNEIROS,VINICIUS C.; BONAZZA,MARCELO; SANQUETTA,CARLOS R..
ABSTRACT The spatial distribution of tropical tree species can affect the consistency of the estimators in commercial forest inventories, therefore, appropriate sampling procedures are required to survey species with different spatial patterns in the Amazon Forest. For this, the present study aims to evaluate the conventional sampling procedures and introduce the adaptive cluster sampling for volumetric inventories of Amazonian tree species, considering the hypotheses that the density, the spatial distribution and the zero-plots affect the consistency of the estimators, and that the adaptive cluster sampling allows to obtain more accurate volumetric estimation. We use data from a census carried out in Jamari National Forest, Brazil, where trees with...
