Hermit crab (Decapoda, Anomura) attraction to dead gastropod baits in an infralittoral algae bank BABT
Pezzuti,Juarez C. B.; Turra,Alexander; Leite,Fosca P. P..
Hermit crabs use gastropod shells as shelter and are adapted to follow chemical cues released from tissues of dead or injured gastropods as a way to find new and more adequate shells. The species composition, crab size, shell types adequacy and physical condition were compared between attracted individuals and crabs collected in previous samples. The previous sampling was carried out in five areas before each experiment. Then, five baits of crushed gastropods in nylon net bags were installed in these areas. Three samples were taken at 30min intervals, capturing all crabs within a circle of 60cm diameter. Attraction of hermit crabs was tested for four different gastropod baits to verify specificity of the chemical cues. Clibanarius antillensis, Pagurus...

Galactans: an overview of their most important sourcing and applications as natural polysaccharides BABT
Delattre,Cedric; Fenoradosoa,Taratra Andrée; Michaud,Philippe.
Since last decades, lot of biological and rheological properties of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides were described. Among them, galactans and more especially sulfated galactans from seaweeds have shown interesting and specific properties not only as texturing agents but also as biological active compounds on several organisms. This class of polysaccharides includes classical sulfated galactans extracted from seaweeds and classified as agar and carrageenans. However, some galactans are more complex and their specific structural features have been characterized after their extraction from terrestrial plants, seaweeds but also animals and microoragnisms. This review catalogues the origins, structural characteristics and potentialities of these...

Evaluation of gastric anti-ulcer activity in a hydro-ethanolic extract from Kielmeyera coriacea BABT
Goulart,Yara Cavalcante Fortes; Sela,Vania Ramos; Obici,Simoni; Martins,Juliana Vanessa Colombo; Otobone,Fernanda; Cortez,Diogenes Aparicio; Audi,Elisabeth Aparecida.
The antiulcer activity of a hydro-ethanolic extract prepared from the stems of Kielmeyera coriacea Mart. (Guttiferae) was evaluated in rats employing the ethanol-acid, acute stress and Indomethacin models to induce experimental gastric ulcers. Treatment with K coriacea hydro-ethanolic extract provided significant antiulcer protection in the ethanol-acid and Indomethacin models, but not in the acute stress model. These results suggested that the K coriacea hydro-ethanolic extract increased resistance to necrotizing agents, providing a direct, protective effect on the gastric mucosa.

In this study a total of 16 Fusarium verticillioides strains isolated from corn feed samples were characterized by fumonisin (FB) production and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). All the strains produced FB1 and FB2 with levels ranging from 2.41 to 3996.36 µg/g, and from 1.18 to 1209.91 µg/g, respectively. From the 16 F. verticillioides strains, four were identified as low (3.59 to 1289.84 µg/g), eight as intermediate (>1289.84 to 3772.44 µg/g) and four strains as high (>3772.44 µg/g) fumonisin producers. From the total of 105 loci amplified, 60 (57.14%) were polymorphic. RAPD analysis showed very similar patterns among low, moderate and high fumonisin-producing strains. Although RAPD markers were capable of discriminating the different F....

Partitioning optimization of proteins from Zea mays malt in ATPS PEG 6000/CaCl2 BABT
Ferreira,Graziela Batista; Evangelista,Alex Ferreira; Severo Junior,João Baptista; Souza,Roberto Rodrigues de; Santana,José Carlos Curvelo; Tambourgi,Elias Basile; Jordão,Elizabete.
This work aimed to establish the relationship between the compositions and pH of ATPS PEG 6000/CaCl2 and the proteins partition from maize malt and also to simplify the process optimization in ATPS for a statistical model, established by response surface methodology (RSM). Results showed that these were no influence of pH on the phase diagrams and on the composition of tie line length of PEG 6000/CaCl2 ATPS. SRM analyses showed that elevated pH and larger tie line length were the best conditions for recovering of maize malt proteins. The maximum partition coefficient by PEG 6000/CaCl2 ATPS was about 4.2 and was achieved in ATPS in a single purification step. The theoretical maximum partition coefficient was between 4.1-4.3. The process was very suitable...

Isolation of bacteriocin - producing lactic acid bacteria from 'Ugba' and 'Okpiye', two locally fermented nigerian food condiments BABT
Nwuche,Charles Ogugua.
In this work, 100 samples each of 'ugba' and 'okpiye' were evaluated for the presence of bacteriocin producing lactic acid bacteria. Thirty strains showing antibacterial activity against at least one of the indicator organisms were selected from a total of 752 colonies isolated from the condiments. Out of the 30, only five strains retained activity after the pH of the broth supernatant was adjusted to 6.5. When evaluated by the agar-well diffusion assay, the spectra of inhibitory activity showed that Staphylococcus aureus was the most sensitive indicator organism tested, while Listeria monocytogenes was the most resistant. One strain (UG 2) was active against Escherichia coli. The assays using the cell-free supernatant of the cultures showed that the...

Functional response of the predator Eriopis connexa (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to different prey types BABT
Sarmento,Renato Almeida; Pallini,Angelo; Venzon,Madelaine; Souza,Og Francisco Fonseca de; Molina-Rugama,Adrián José; Oliveira,Claudinei Lima de.
This work evaluated the functional response of adult females of Eriopis connexa to different densities of Macrosiphum euphorbiae and Tetranychus evansi. When preying upon aphids, E. connexa presented a sigmoidal functional response (Type III). This behavior, however, changed drastically to an exponential (Type II) functional response, when mites (T. evansi), rather than aphids, were offered to E. connexa. Such different patterns showed that this coccinellid needed to adopt distinct strategies according to the kind of prey available. Since predators were believed to be able to regulate prey populations only when adopting Type III functional response. E. connexa would be a good candidate for a biological control agent of M. euphorbiae, but would not suppress...

Expression and Localization of Olfactory Receptor AcerOr1 from Chinese Honey Bee, Apis cerana cerana (Hymenoptera, Apidae) BABT
Guo,Lina.
ABSTRACT Olfactory receptors are essential for recognition and detection of odor in honeybees. Although we have cloned and characterized the sequence of olfactory receptor AcerOr1 before, the tissue distribution and location of this gene in the nurse and the forager worker Apis cerana cerana were not very clear. To further investigate this information of AcerOr1 gene, we analyzed its expression and localization. The results showed that AcerOr1 mRNA was predominantly expressed in the antennae of nurse and forager bees, while the AcerOr1 protein was predominant in thorax, and its expression in antennae was higher in forager than in nurse. IHC revealed that AcerOr1 mainly localized in the olfactory neurons of the antennae. In addition, the staining intensity...

Shelf life of custard apple treated with 1-methylciclopropene: an antagonist to the ethylene action BABT
Benassi,Guilherme; Correa,Guilherme Augusto Simões Francischini; Kluge,Ricardo Alfredo; Jacomino,Angelo Pedro.
Custard apple (Annona squamosa L.) presents very short storage life at room temperature, in part due to heavy losses in firmness. This process is associated with the production and action of the hormone ethylene. In order to retard the ripening evolution in custard apple, fruits were treated with the competitive ethylene antagonist 1-methycyclopropene (1-MCP) at concentrations of 0, 30, 90, 270 or 810 nL L-1 for 12 h at 25ºC and then stored at 25ºC for four days. The soluble solids content (SSC), firmness and percentage of ripe fruits (firmness < 0.5kg) were determined during the experimental period. There were no differences among treatments as to the SSC. Fruits treated with 810 nL L-1 of 1-MCP showed higher firmness than the control fruits. Both ,...
