Some Remarks concerning subspecies of Ducula aenea from Celebes and surrounding Islands Naturalis
Hoogerwerf, A..
Though Schlegel (1866, p. 200) as well as Hartert (1898, p. 135) pointed out that Carpophaga paulina, described by Bonaparte (1850, p. 35) and now known as Ducula aenea paulina (Bp.), originating from the Sula Archipelago (East of the East Coast of Celebes) seemed not quite similar to birds from Celebes, lack of sufficient material refrained these authors from separating Sula birds. But this was done by Siebers (1929, p. 152/3) who separated them under the name Ducula aenea sulana, on account of their smaller wing measurements and the darker (more chestnut coloured) nuchal patch. The Sula birds should be also smaller than nuchalis from the Philippines and (doubtful) pulchella from Togian 2) which, according to Siebers, should belong to the same...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 42. A preliminary review of the Oriolidae Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C..
Asian orioles that have been reviewed since Greenway (1962) are discussed and recommendations are made for the recognition of subspecies. Reasons are provided for the split of Oriolus steerii Sharpe, 1877a, from Oriolus xanthonotus Horsfield, 1821, originally proposed in Dickinson et al. (1991) when such reasons were omitted. Problem areas remain and research is suggested, some morphological, some molecular.

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 52. An introduction to the bird collections of Brian Houghton Hodgson (1801-1894) Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C..
Hodgson spent most of his career in Nepal and several years of retirement in Darjeeling, making collection in both areas. Dates relating to these periods are clarified and his collections and donations are discussed. His drawings, touched upon briefly, are now receiving further study and will be reported upon in due course.

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 44. A preliminary review of the Corvidae Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Eck, S.; Martens, J..
Certain Asian species of corvids, mainly those that have been reviewed since 1962, are discussed and attention is drawn to recommended changes in subspecific or specific status. Problem areas remain and research is suggested, some morphological, some molecular and some into voice. The rationale behind the ongoing revision of Corvus macrorhynchos is explained, but it is recommended that it be considered hypothetical and further developments awaited so that all relevant taxa can be assigned safely to species.

The avifauna of Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
The avifauna of the island of Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) is reviewed. Introductory sections, which include a chapter on the history of ornithological discovery, are followed by the main part, a systematic account in which each species and subspecies known from Flores is treated separately. A discussion of the zoogeography, a gazetteer, a list of references and an index complete the volume. At present 214 forms (210 species) are accepted as having been reliably recorded. Of these, ca. 160 are, or may be assumed to be, residents, and of ca. 100 the eggs have been collected and are described. The balance consists of visiting sea and freshwater birds, migrants from the North and migrants from the South. It is likely that few additions remain to be made to...

Prolegomenon to further studies in the Chrysococcyx 'Malayanus' group (Aves, Cucilidae) Naturalis
Parker, S.A..
In its present state, the corpus of knowledge constituting our understanding of the Chrysococcyx 'malayanus' group is too unorganized to be used directly as the foundation for a modern systematic appraisal. A n attempt is here made to rectify this by overhauling the available facts. Stemming from this exercise, a few simple preliminary adjustments to the nomenclature and taxonomy of the group are suggested. The taxa here recognized are C. minutillus (with subspecies peninsularis subsp. nov., albifrons, cleis subsp. nov., minutillus and barnardi), C. russatus (subspecies aheneus, jungei, misoriensis and russatus), C. rufomerus, C. crassirostris and C. ruficollis. The type description of Cuculus malayanus Raffles, 1822 being recognizable as a femalephase...

Scientific results of the Surinam expedition 1948-1949 : Part II. Zoology No. 3. Birds Naturalis
Junge, G.C.A..
During the Scientific Surinam Expedition 1948-1949 Mr. P. H. Creutzberg collected only a few specimens of birds, which came in the Leiden Museum. Most of the collected birds belong to species well known from Surinam as Butorides striatus, Piaya cayana, Rhynchocyclus flaviventris. Others like Leucopternis albicollis are not exceptionally rare. One species, however, proved to be new for Surinam. It is of interest to mention it here together with some other species, rarely recorded from Surinam, collected by Mr. W. C. van Heurn in 1911 and by Mr. H. A. Boon in 1901. Leucopternis melanops Lath. A specimen (♀) of the Black-Faced Hawk was collected by Mr. W. C. van Heurn at Guyana Goudplacer on October 9, 1911. Guyana Goudplacer is situated on the railroad about...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 56. The authorship and date of Turdus rubrocanus Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Walters, M..
This name from J.E. & G.R. Gray’s 1847 Catalogue of B.H. Hodgson’s materials from Nepal was not based on a description therein, although it is generally cited from there, and correctly so except for the date. It is valid from there only under the little-used Articles 11.6 and 50.7 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (I.C.Z.N., 1999). These rules allow Hodgson’s 1844 nomen nudum to be reintroduced together with an ‘indication’ although still without a description. In exploring the validity of the citation from 1847 we found that over time the rules of nomenclature have changed and that what should not have been acceptable in 1962 and 1964, is now acceptable. We also draw attention to a colour plate that seems likely to have been...

Current studies on megapode phylogeny Naturalis
Brom, T.G.; Dekker, R.W.R.J..
Hypotheses regarding the phylogenetic relationships between megapodes and other birds are reviewed, and it is concluded that the available evidence supports a sistergroup relationship between megapodes and all other galliforms. Current studies in this direction are discussed. The resolvement of intrafamilial relationships has gained less attention so far and the most probable hypothesis based on traditional characters is presented.

A digital catalogue of primary type specimens in German ornithological collections - a three year project running within GBIF - Germany - Vertebrata Naturalis
Elzen, R. van den; Frahnert, S.; Quaisser, C..
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international initiative that aims to enable the worldwide exchange of biodiversity-related data through the internet. Within a three year project funded as a German contribution to GBIF the information about primary types of birds (and other vertebrates) in German collections will be made available through the internet (http://www.gbif.de). This information includes the original description, status (syntypes, holotypes, etc.), current taxonomic classification, collecting data, mode of preparation, current location as well as digital images of type specimens. So far, 900 of the expected 4000 primary type taxa of birds have been investigated and digitised. It is expected that by the end of the...

The type-locality of Pteronetta hartlaubii (Cassin, 1859) (Aves, Anatidae) Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
Currently, the type locality of Pteronetta hartlaubii is considered to be the Camma River, Gabon, but this is an error, and must be Rio Boutry, Gold Coast (now Ghana), where the holotype was obtained by H.S. Pel. In a note, reference is made to a few other specimens obtained by the collectors Pel and Nagtglas which in recent literature have been overlooked.

Notes on two small collections of Birds from new Guinea Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
INTRODUCTION Over the past few years the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie has received, from different sources, several small collections of birds from various parts of New Guinea. This is a report on two of these. No ornithologist accompanied the expedition to the Sterren-gebergte (Star Mountains) of 1959, under the leadership of Dr. L. D. Brongersma and Captain (Air) G. F. Venema (Brongersma & Venema, 1960), but the mammal preparator Mr. J. J. Staats obtained a collection of some 120 bird skins. The majority of these are from the highlands in the Sterren-gebergte area, but a few specimens were collected in the lowlands near Hollandia and Tanahmerah. All localities with their approximate altitudes are listed and most of them are shown on the...

On some birds observed in the Netherlands Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Among the birds and the eggs from the Netherlands received by 's Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie in 1930 there are some ones of special interest, which I mention in the following lines: Daption capense (Linnaeus). Some days ago I received from Mr. J. J. TER PELKWIJK at the Hague the imperfect skull of a petrel, that has been found by Mr. S. BAKKER at the Hague between half August and half September 1930 on the shore of Hoek van Holland north of the Noorderpier. Comparing the skull with skeletons in our collection, I found that it belongs to the Cape Petrel, Daption capense (L.). This is the second time that this species is recorded from the Netherlands, for in the beginning of last century a specimen of the Cape Petrel has been found dead near...

Description of a new species of Bush Warbler of the genus Cettia Bonaparte, 1834 (Aves: Sylviidae) from Yamdena, Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia Naturalis
Rozendaal, F.G..
The use of mistnets in forest on Yamdena (Tanimbar Islands, South Moluccas, Indonesia) revealed the presence of an undescribed bush-warbler of the genus Cettia Bonaparte, 1834. The new species is described and illustrated here and its morphological characters and vocalizations are compared with those of Asian-Pacific congeners in the subgenus Horeites Hodgson, 1845. It is considered most closely related to the Southwest Pacific warblers previously known as Vitia Ramsay, 1875. In addition, the identity of Cettia bivittata Finsch, 1901, is discussed.

Geographic variation and subspecies of Corvus Enca (Horsfield, 1821) Naturalis
Oortwijn, R.G.M..
In this paper a survey is given of the geographic variation and the subspecies of Corvus enca (Horsfield). For that purpose the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden and the Zoölogisch Museum in Amsterdam were studied and compared with the literature. My examinations resulted in the following division of subspecies: - Corvus enca compilator Richmond: Malaya, Sumatra, Simalur, Nias, Borneo, (Rhio Archipelago). - Corvus enca enca (Horsfield): Java, Bali, Celebes, Sula Islands, (Mentawei Islands). - Corvus enca violaceus Bonaparte: Ceram (and perhaps Buru). - The birds from Mindoro, Samar, Mindanao, Palawan, Balabac and Luzon possibly belong to two or three subspecies. Geographic variation also appears to exist among the...

Een oude vondst op Java van de Groote Aalscholver (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris territori (Math.) in het museum te Buitenzorg Naturalis
Hoogerwerf, A..
In De Tropische Natuur (jrg. Raffles Museum, no. 12, May 1936, p. 120. „It is most curious' schreven wij „that there was no satisfactory formal record of this bird from Java when it breeds in hundreds in the eastern part of the island.", hetgeen echter niet geheel juist was, want Vorderman noemde deze aalscholver voor Java (Nat. Tijdschr. Ned. Ind., vol. 60, 1900, p. 99) naar aanleiding van Ogilvie Grant's opgave in Cat. Brit. Museum (vol. 26, p. 376) waar sprake is van een door...

The Micronesian megapode Megapodius laperouse: conservation and research needs Naturalis
Stinson, D.W.; Glass, P.O..
Introduction The Micronesian megapode Megapodius laperouse, one of the smallest megapode species, is endemic to the Mariana (M. l. laperouse) and Palau (M. l. senex) Islands in the western Pacific. We outline here the outlook for the species and aspects of their biology that need investigation. A more detailed account of the status and biology of M. l. laperouse in the Marianas is in preparation. Status and distribution The Micronesian megapode in the Marianas is now restricted to the remote volcanic islands north of Saipan, with the exception of a small remnant population on Aguijan and a reintroduced population on Saipan. In historic times, this species was found on the larger coral islands of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, but was common only on...
