Wood, C.D; Boustead, P.; Mora, Y.; Grijalva, M..

Halare, I. A..

Co-Management of Artisanal Fisheries in Mozambique: A case Study of Kwirikwidge Fishing Centre, Angoche District, Nampula Province OceanDocs
Gervasio, H.; Lopes, S..
Mozambique is situated on the east coast of Africa between 10°27´S and 26°52´S latitude and has a coastline of 2,780 Km, which can be divided into three regions: The Northern region (characterised by the occurrence of corals and rocks); the Central region (sandy) and the Southern region (composed of dunes). Partly, this division determines the distribution and the potential of the marine ecosystems, their access and also influence the choice of fishing methods and equipment. In Mozambique, fishing is a highly ranked activity not only for the absorption of the local labour force but also for the provision of aquatic protein products to the local populations and earning hard currency for the country. The main marine resources are crustaceans (mainly prawn,...

Dilemma of Small-scale Fishers at the Dawn of Industrial Fishing in Kenya OceanDocs
Muchiri, M.S..
People of the Kenya coast have lived off the Indian Ocean for as long as memory can go. Folklore and legend reflect a history of dependence on the sea for livelihood, including fisheries. Due to technological limitation coupled with small human populations, harvesting from the sea had little effect in the past. Fishermen relied on simple fishing gear operated either from the shore or from dug-out and small planked canoes to supply needs of their families....

Lopez, J.; Sow, I..

Re, M.E..
The species composition, population structure, seasonality in catches and fishing of octopuses along the Argentine coast are described from available statistical data and capture samplings. Three species of octopuses, Octopus tehuelchus, Eledone massyae and Enteroctopus megalocyathus are caught. An artisanal intertidal fishery of O.tehuelchus occurs mainly in summer, from November-December to March-April in the North Patagonian coast, especially in the San Matias Gulf, by hooks. E.massyae is caught by coastal trawlers all around the year but mainly in winter and spring in Mar del Plata and Necochea areas. E.megalocyathus is caught by hooks in the intertidal zone and by diving in the subtidal zone, from the North Patagonian gulfs (March to November)to the...

Obstacles To The Development Of Small Scale Fish Trade In West Africa OceanDocs
Tall, A..
Background information is presented of the importance of the artisanal fisheries sector in West Africa in terms of income and employment generation, foreign exchange earning and as a major supplier of animal protein to low income urban dwellers and the rural poor. Processing methodologies of smoking, salting/drying and fermentation is still traditional although improved technologies are being introduced and gradually adopted and coupled with a few semi-industrial processors to produce a final product with preferred tastes and market preferences. West Africa artisanal fisheries could benefit considerably from increased trade to the so called "ethnic market" in Europe, USA and other developed countries. Some key trading routes have been identified for the...

Morsan, E..
The purple clam, Amiantis purpurata, inhabits the warm-temperate waters of the southwestern Atlantic, from Espírito Santo (Brazil) to the San Matías Gulf (Argentina). There are no previous studies dealing with its biology and populations dynamics. Astock located in Playa Villarino (San Antonio Este, San Matías Gulf) supports the only artisanal fishery targeting this species. Some peculiar aspects of its dynamics revealed by this study have significant implications for management: 1. It constitutes the southernmost population of this species, and appears to be isolated from other populations located to the north 2. Individuals are slow-growing 3. It seems to be composed of just one or a few annual classes, which are older than 10 years . 4. The spatial...

Co-Management in Small-Scale Fisheries: A Synthesis of Southern and West African Experiences OceanDocs
Sverdrup-Jensen, S.; Raakjaer Nielsen, J..
This presentation summarizes the findings from eight African countries where case studies of co-management arrangements in artisanal fisheries have been undertaken during the period 1996-97. The countries concerned are Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In most of the cases co- management represents a new approach to fisheries management. In some cases, it has only been applied within the last 3-5 years and in a few it is merely being considered as an option. The comparison of cases at this early stage gives an indication as to what appears to be the critical issues in the planning and implementation of fisheries co- management arrangements in the African context.
