Aims Exopolysaccharides (EPS) are industrially valuable molecules with numerous useful properties. This study describes the techniques used for the identification of a novel Vibrio bacterium and preliminary characterization of its EPS. Methods and Results Bioprospection in marine intertidal areas of New Caledonia followed by screening for EPS producing brought to selection of the isolate NC470. Industrial potentialities related to biotechnology of microalgae are examined, highlighting a wide spectrum of applications which concern principally nutrition, health, environment and energy. The french situation of research on microalgae, especially at Ifremer, is assessed, showing that the main axis are fine chemistry, aquaculture, environment, bio-process engineering. A previously reported bacterial bioemulsifier, here termed microbactan, was further analyzed to characterize its lipid component, molecular weight, ionic character and toxicity, along with its bioemulsifying potential for hydrophobic substrates at a range of temperatures, salinities and pH values. Analyses showed that microbactan is a high molecular weight (700 kDa), non-ionic molecule. Gas chromatography of the lipid fraction revealed the presence of palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids; thus microbactan may be considered a glycolipoprotein. Microbactan emulsified aromatic hydrocarbons and oils to various extents; the highest emulsification index was recorded against motor oil (96%). Extraction of natural substances and chemical synthesis are the main sources of pharmaceutical molecules. When possible, one may transfer the gene of the molecule in living cells creating individual factories producing on demand and in a safe way the requested molecule. Today, bacteria, yeast, mammalian cells and plants constitute the main plate-forms for various commercial products. Microalgae present numerous advantages and could offer a powerful tool for the production of commercial molecules in a near future.

A bibliographic database of scientific papers published by authors affiliated to research institutions worldwide, especially focused in Europe and in the European Atlantic Area, and containing the keywords “microalga(e)” or “phytoplankton” was built. A corpus of 79,020 publications was obtained and analyzed using the Orbit Intellixir software to characterize the research trends related to microalgae markets, markets opportunities and technologies that could have important impacts on markets evolution. Nuclear reactions are a very important natural phenomenon in the universe. On the earth, cosmic rays constantly cause nuclear reactions. High energy beams created by medical devices also induce nuclear reactions in the human body. The biological role of these nuclear reactions is unknown. Here we show that the in vivo biological systems are exquisite and sophisticated by nature in influence on nuclear reactions and in resistance to radical damage in the body of live animals. Immunization with cancer cells is of great demand in anti-cancer therapy. However, current cellular vaccines are inefficient and there are questions regarding their overall safety. We report a simple and straightforward approach for improving of cellular cancer vaccines. Through treatment of cancer cell cultures with purified protease, it is possible to make preparations of cell-surface antigens that are free of intracellular content and contain two orders-of-magnitude less protein than the whole lysate of an equivalent number of cancer cells. Optimising Blue Fluorescent Protein (BFP) for use as a mammalian reporter gene in parallel with Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). Nature Precedings

To obtain an optimised form of BFP for use as a reporter gene in mammalian cells, the brightest available GFP form, EGFP, was mutated at 5 different positions, yielding 8 different mutagenised forms of BFP. The intensity of the fluorescent signals attained in mammalian cells with all these various versions of BFP was analysed by flow cytometry of transiently transfected COS 7 cells. The best mutant obtained can be detected readily both by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy, even when expressed together with GFP. Novel methodologies are currently being evaluated for the Chemical Analysis of soybean seeds as well as developing mature soybean embryos by FT-IR/NIR Microspectroscopy. This is the first report of FT-NIR Chemical Images obtained with 1 micron resolution. NIR spectra of Proteins, Oil and DNA fibers are obtained for regions as small as 1μ^2^.

With the environmental risk assessment (ERA) for genetically modified plants (GMP) the identification of equivalence or differences in the composition of ingredients of GMPs and non-GMPs has to be investigated. The strategy is based upon the idea that traditionally cultivated crops have been used safely for many years, thus every divergence within the compounds of a GMP in contrast to its non-GMP counterpart could refer to a risk and has to be further analysed.

New fungal sources for α-L-Rhamnosidase: an important enzyme used in the synthesis of drugs and drug precursors Nature Precedings

Two fungal strains were isolated and tentatively identified as Penicillium VY and Aspergillus VY. All the isolated species show the maximum production on third day in a liquid culture media. The pH optimum was found to be 10.0 for Penicillium VY and 11.0 for Aspergillus VY. The temperature optima were 50ºC in both the cases. The enzyme produced by Penicillium VY was found to be stable in the pH range 3.0-7.0 and 3.0–6.0 in case of Aspergillus VY. The enzyme does not loose activity up to 40º C in case of Penicillium VY and 40ºC in case of Aspergillus VY if exposed for 1 h.
