Integrated Management of the Golf of Guinea Fight against Coastal Pollution OceanDocs
Akpabli, R.K..
The countries bordering the Golf of Guinea are the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Guinea Equatorial, Gabon and Sao-Tome-et-Principe (which is actually an Island in the Golf of Guinea). These countries together make up about one third of the population of Sub-Saharan-Africa. In the coastal zones the population has considerably increased. Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast, is estimated to have a population of 2.5 million. With a yearly growth rate of 5% it will augment to 8 million in 2025. In Nigeria, Lagos, which is situated in the coastal zone, has more than 9 million inhabitants. In Cameroon, Duala, which is situated in the estuary Wouri, has more than 1.4 million inhabitants. In Ghana, Accra and its metroplitan zone has...

Hozbor, M.C.; Hernández, D.R.; Cucchi Colleoni, A.D.; Costagliola, M.C.; Peressutti, S.R..
The northern sector of the Argentine continental shelf (34º S-41º S) is a highly productive area that sustains important fishery resources like Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) and is characterized by the presence of frontal zones with retention of detritus and plankton. In marine environments the bacterioplankton represents one of the main components of the trophic nets and plays a key role in biogeochemical cycles. In this ecosystem biomass and bacterioplankton distribution as well as their relation to environmental variables were analyzed. The highest chlorophyll a values, not significantly related to bacterioplankton (p > 0.05), were found in frontal and coastal areas. Abundance, bacterial biomass and cell volume values ranged 0.48-5.42 x 106...

Pérez Santos, I.E.; Arencibia Carballo, G.; Capetillo Piñar, N.; Isla Molleda, M..
In this work the result of the project “Determination of the environmental impact on aquaculture in the coastal zone" is presented. Where there were sampled more than 28 points. The water quality of the ecosystems is studied around the shrimp farms like coastal lagoons, rivers and the coastal area, where the shrimp farm get the water from, and at the same time the waste water of the process is spilled. The obtained values of the analisis in water and silts give a valuation of the environmental state of the area; revealing that the lagoon Las Playas is in a not well environmental state, (salinity of 47 ppt, DQO between 3,26 and 6,14 mg/L, N-NO3 700 - 900 µg/L, ammonium 36 - 148 µg/L and silicates between the 1600 and 3400 µg/L) and silts (carbon and...

Rodríguez Martínez, R.; Torres Rodríguez, I.; Suárez Melo, Y.; García Fuentes, O.; Beltrán González, J..
The concentration of hydrocarbons of petroleum in marine sediments in areas of industrial, harbour and fishing interest to the N of the island of Cuba, as the bays of Cienfuegos, Port Father, Guantánamo, Matanzas with special emphasis in Sagua La Grande and Havana. The results showed high levels of contamination for these organic compounds in the bay of Havana, with a medium 1 220 mg·kg-1 dry matter. The biggest accumulations were in the creeks of Marimelena and Atarés. A tendency exists to diminish the degree of contamination for petroleum in these sediments. In the bay of Sagua La Grande the concentrations of total hydrocarbons were not high (averague 45 mg·kg-1 dry matter), and it allowed to classify to this ecosystem with very little influenced by...

Major Fishes of West African Coastal Waters and Their Morphological Characterization, with Emphasis on Sarotherodon melanotheron Teleostei, Cichlidae) OceanDocs
Falk, T.M.; Teugels, G.G..
The West African coastal zone is rich in estuaries and lagoons. Estuaries are abundant in the area from the mouth of Senegal to Guinea (e.g., Sine Saloum, Casamance); lagoons are generally present from Cote d'Ivoire to the Niger Delta in Nigeria (e.g., Ebrie Lagoon, Porto Novo Lagoon, Lagos Lagoon). Because of their important diversity, it is difficult to give their physical and biological definitions. They are all, however, characterized by a typical and rich fish species composition

Coral reefs and their management in Tanzania OceanDocs
Wagner, G.M..
Coral reefs are very important in Tanzania, both ecologically and socio-economically, as major fishing grounds and tourist attractions. Numerous fringing and patch reefs are located along about two-thirds of Tanzania’s coastline. These reefs have been partially to severely degraded by human (primarily destructive fishing practices) and natural (particularly coral bleaching) causes. These immediate human causes have been brought about by various socioeconomic root causes, particularly poverty and lack of proper management. After decades of human and natural impacts there has been only limited reef recovery. This paper presents a region-by-region analysis of trends in the condition of coral reefs in Tanzania in relation to the causes of damage. While earlier...

Brahim., M.; Atoui, A..

Blivi, A.B..

Development And Climate Change In Egypt: Focus On Coastal Resources OceanDocs
El Raey, M.; Hagenstad, M.; Smith, J.; Agrawala, S.; van Aalst, M.; Conway, D.; Moehner, A..
This report presents the integrated case study for Egypt carried out under an OECD project on Development and Climate Change. The report is structured around a three-tiered framework. First, recent climate trends and climate change scenarios for Egypt are assessed and key sectoral impacts are identified and ranked along multiple indicators to establish priorities for adaptation. Second, donor portfolios are analyzed to examine the proportion of development assistance activities affected by climate risks. A desk analysis of donor strategies and project documents as well as national plans is conducted to assess the degree of attention to climate change concerns in development planning and assistance. Third, an in-depth analysis is conducted for coastal zones...

Coastal resources and management systems influenced by conflict and migration: Mecúfi, Mozambique OceanDocs
Bryceson, I.; Massinga, A..
Coastal resource utilization and management systems, bothtraditional and more recently conceived, were studied in Mecufidistrict, northern Mozambique in a post-conflict situation prior towhich a significant migration of people to the coast had occurred.A wide variety of coastal biotopes containing a multitude ofresources had been affected in various ways. Intertidalorganisms exhibited signs of decreasing abundance and averagesize, whereas offshore fishes and mangrove forests did not showsigns of overutilization. It was observed that traditional coastalmanagement systems were still influential, but that newerinitiatives were only beginning to enter into significant dialogueand cooperation with these. In the current circumstances ofpeace and political...

The environmental recovery of the main tourist destinations in the Colombian Caribbean during the Covid-19 quarantine Boletín de Investigaciones
Correa-Ramirez,Marco; Pacheco,Wilberto; Ricaurte-Villota,Constanza.
ABSTRACT To counteract the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic disease, the Colombian government decreed a quarantine period from March 24 to July 1, 2020, which forced the cessation of tourist activities and the closure of the main tourist destinations of the Colombian Caribbean: Santa Marta, Cartagena, and San Andrés. During this period, a significant increase in the environmental quality of these coastal zones was perceived. To quantify environmental changes in the coastal zone, the variation in chlorophyll concentration and total suspended solids observed by the Sentinel-3 satellite mission, 30 days before and after the start of the quarantine, was analyzed. The results showed a decrease in the concentration of chlorophyll (> 20 %) and suspended solids...
