De rode schouderboktor Rhamnusium bicolor bereikt in Nederland de noordwestelijke grens van het verspreidingsgebied. Uit Nederland waren tot nu toe veertien exemplaren bekend waarvan de laatste in 1941 werd verzameld. Op 17 mei 2011 werden voor het eerst sinds 70 jaar weer twee exemplaren aangetroffen in het Geuldal. Het is onduidelijk of deze populatie zich recent heeft gevestigd, of dat de soort al die tijd onopgemerkt heeft stand gehouden.

The generic classification of the Afrotropical Bolboceratini is discussed. Fourteen genera are recognized, five of them new: Bolboceratellus, Bolbodius, Bolboceratex, Namibiobolbus and Meridiobolbus. Microbolbus Vulcano et al. is synonymized with Mimobolbus Vulcano et al. Bolbaffroides and Bolboceratops are raised to generic rank. The genera are keyed, diagnosed, and their species are listed. Many new combinations are proposed, mainly for species hitherto combined with Bolboceras Kirby.

De hydrophilide Dactylosternum abdominale dook de laatste jaren op steeds meer plaatsen rondom Nederland op. In 2006 werd de soort eindelijk ook in Nederland ontdekt. In tegenstelling tot de meeste vertegenwoordigers van de familie der spinnende waterkevers leeft D. abdominale niet in het water, maar op het land in rottende materialen. Eén exemplaar van deze kosmopoliet werd verzameld in een rottende zwam te Warmond.

Als voorbereiding op een samenvattende publicatie over de Nederlandse prachtkeverfauna werd een grote hoeveelheid materiaal van deze keverfamilie uit openbare collecties en een aantal privéverzamelingen bewerkt. Hierbij werden twee soorten ontdekt die niet op de lijst van inlandse prachtkevers stonden: Anthaxia godeti en Trachys scrobiculatus. De eerste soort werd in 1938 al herkend, maar later als synoniem van A. quadripunctata beschouwd en weer afgevoerd. Hoewel Anthaxia godeti vroeger minder zeldzaam blijkt te zijn geweest dan de nauwverwante A. quadripunctata, moet de soort inmiddels als verdwenen worden beschouwd. To find the insects associated with seeds of a Brazilian native leguminous plant, Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus Hassl., fruits were collected from isolated trees in Tres Barras, Parana, Brazil. A sample of 500 g of fruits with 2353 seeds was evaluated in the laboratory. It was found that 77.4% of the seeds were not damaged by insects, 12.4% of the seeds were damaged and 10.2% of the seeds were empty. The bruchid species Ctenocolum crotonae (Fåhraeus) was detected for the first time in this plant. This species was recorded in Mato Grosso, Brazil and, in this paper, the geographical distribution is amplified to include Parana State. The succession of Scarabaeidae in cattle dung deposited in pasture were observed from January to August 2001 in Itumbiara County, State of Goiás, Brazil (18º25'S; 49º13'W). Fresh cattle dung pats were exposed on a pasture area for one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten days and then taken individually to the laboratory for screening and identification of the Scarabaeidae therein present. A total of 100 dung pads were exposed in the field from which 3,229 specimens of Scarabaeidae were recovered. The most frequent species found were: Ataenius aequalis Harold and Aphodius lividus Balth. The majority of specimens were collected in cattle dung exposed for one and two days.

Realizou-se um estudo sobre a fauna de artrópodes associados a fezes de aves poedeiras em granja do estado de São Paulo, de janeiro de 2001 a dezembro de 2002. O objetivo foi verificar a freqüência de dípteros e coleópteros coletados por meio do funil de Berlese e pelo método de flutuação, além de correlacionar os métodos de coletas e a possível sazonalidade dos mesmos ao longo das estações. Das setenta e cinco coletas realizadas, capturaram-se 29.499 artrópodes, sendo 16.702 Diptera (seis famílias) e 12.797 Coleoptera (quatro famílias). Algumas espécies de artrópodes apresentaram relação direta entre o método de coleta, as estações do ano e a precipitação pluvial, com aumento significativo do número de insetos coletados em determinadas épocas do ano.

Realizou-se um estudo sobre a fauna de artrópodes associada às fezes bovinas em Goiás, de janeiro a dezembro de 1998. O objetivo foi verificar a freqüência dos Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera e Macrochelidae (Acarina) considerados importantes no processo de degradação das fezes bovinas nas pastagens e no controle de Diptera. Vinte placas fecais bovinas foram coletadas aleatoriamente, a cada mês, com oito dias de idade, colocadas em recipientes plásticos e levadas ao laboratório. Os artrópodes foram obtidos pelo método de flutuação em água. Foram coletados 52 espécies de artrópodes em 10 famílias, incluindo, 24 Coleoptera (três famílias), 12 Diptera (três famílias), 10 Hymenoptera (três famílias) e seis Macrochelidae (Acarina).

Description of the larva of Alampoides alychnus (Kirsch, 1873), the first known species with bioluminescent immatures in Euplinthini (Elateridae, Agrypninae)

Mature larva of Alampoides alychnus (Kirsch) is described and compared to known Pyrophorini immatures. Larvae were collected live in the soil of a region dominated by sugarcane plantation and gallery forest in Campo Novo dos Parecis, Mato Grosso, Brazil. They were maintained in laboratory and the pupal period lasted 14 days. This larva differs from other Pyrophorini larvae mainly by bioluminescent pattern: one pair of luminous spots on the mesonotum, and a longitudinal series of median spots on the metanotum and all abdominal segments. The morphology of larva and the bioluminescent pattern of larva and pupa are described for the first time to the genus and the tribe. The fact that adults show no trace of luminescence is emphasized.
