Several ecological hypotheses try to explain geographical patterns in biodiversity. The Metabolic Theory of Ecology (MTE) predicts that temperature is the main determinant of richness patterns for ectothermic organisms and that the relationship between richness (lnS) and temperature (1/kT) is a linear relationship with angular coefficient (b) near -0.65. This study tested the MTE for continental zooplankton diversity in 63 lakes in Brazil. Copepoda, Cladocera and Rotifera, as well as the three groups combined, showed different patterns from that predicted by MTE, with b values equal to 0.871, 0.516, 0.720 and 0.901, respectively. Temperature explains 12.7% of the richness of Copepoda, 5.3% of Cladocera, 6.7% of Rotifera, and 11.4% of all zooplankton groups... |

The goal of this study was to evaluate the concordance amongst three zooplankton groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) and between the zooplankton groups and the environmental variables in the Luis Eduardo Magalhães reservoir, in the Mid-Tocantins River, Tocantins State, Brazil. Concordance patterns were found in relation to environmental variables, cladocerans, and rotifers, although values were relatively low. These results indicate that one should be cautious about the use of indicative taxonomic groups to detect environmental changes, where divergent results annul extrapolation possibilities and indicate the existence of distinct environmental factors controlling different groups. |

In this study, we analyzed the main distributional features of Scolecitrichidae species in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (northern region of Rio de Janeiro State) and determined and described their habitat partitioning, based on a night series of stratified samplings down to a depth of 1,200 m. A total of 18 species from seven genera were identified and grouped according to their depth distribution. Distinct vertical patterns of total density, richness, diversity, and evenness were observed, with a decrease in density and an increase in diversity and richness with increasing depth. The total scolecitrichid abundance was dominated by a few epipelagic migrant species (Scolecithrix danae, Scolecithricella minor, Amallothrix tenuiserrata, and Lophothrix... |

The aim of this work was to study the structure of the copepod community in relation to hydrographic conditions in Espírito Santo Bay, from 1993 to 1997. Zooplankton samples were obtained in the horizontal tows four times a year, using a 200 µm net. Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were determined in the water samples. The overall mean density of the copepods was 9,085 ind.m-3 with the peaks exceeding 15,000 ind.m-3 in the summer and autumn during the first three years (1993 - 1995). The PCA analysis was used to relate the environmental conditions with the distribution of the copepods. The increases in the abundant species, namely Acartia lilljeborgi, Oithona hebes, Oithona oculata, Paracalanus quasimodo, Parvocalanus crassirostris and Euterpina... |

Mesozooplankton abundance and distribution at Suape Bay, Pernambuco, was studied to assess the impacts caused by the construction of an internal port to increase the capacity of the Suape Port Complex. Zooplankton sampling was done at 3 stations during the dry (November-December/1997) and rainy (April-May/1998) seasons. A plankton net with 300 µm mesh size was used. Wet weight plankton biomass ranged from 44 mg.m-3 to 3,638 mg.m-3. Forty-five macrozooplankton taxa were registered. The most abundant was Copepoda. Among copepods, Acartia lilljeborgi, Parvocalanus crassirostris, Oithona hebes, Corycaeus (C.) speciosus and Temora turbinata were most frequent. Minimum abundance was 9 ind.m-3 and maximum was 2,532 ind.m-3. Average species diversity was 2.55... |

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of concentrations of imazethapyr, imazapic, and bispyribac-sodium herbicides on zooplankton community (Cladocer, Copepod and Rotifer) in rice paddy fields. The decrease of half-life dissipation (DT50) of the herbicides under study in water was: imazethapyr, imazapic, and bispyribac-sodium with an average of 3.75, 3.73 and 1.91 days, respectively. The mixture of imazethapyr with imazapic caused change in the analyzed zooplankton, with an increase in the densities of Cladocer and adult Copepod groups, while bispyribac-sodium caused a reduction of density in Copepod group, both adults and nauplii, in the initial samples. Among the groups, Rotifer was slightly sensitive to the herbicides. |
