N availability is one of the main factors limiting productivity in organic arable systems. Legume-based catch crops (CC) were shown to both increase N yield and reduce N leaching at the crop rotation scale, but strategies to stabilize their growth are required (De Notaris et al., 2018). The present study showed that early CC sowing time and an increased main crop row space can help stabilize CC growth and increase N accumulation, especially when the conditions for the CC are not favorable. Despite the variations in N accumulated in CC biomass, legume-based catch crops represent a valuable source of N for the subsequent crop, with their fertilizer value being less variable than the N accumulated in CC biomass. |

During the past few years, organic dairy farming has grown dramatically in Denmark. Consequently, an increasing number of people are encountering this method of production for the first time. Amongst these, many veterinarians have suddenly had to deal with organic herds in their home district, and, meeting examples of poor animal welfare, they have recently started to express some concerns. Against this background, a so-called “Synthesis of Knowledge” project was initiated to examine the health and welfare of dairy cattle and the use of medication in the transition to organic production. The aim of the project was to investigate associated problems from the point of view of the dairy herd. Based on qualitative research interviews with vets and... |

Marginal willingness to pay for eggs carrying labels indicating different productions methods is estimated using Danish purchase data on individual level. Among other things the labels indicate environmental features and different levels of animal welfare for the hens that produce the eggs. Results show that consumers are generally willing to pay for labels indicating animal friendly production methods. It also appears that consumers living in urban areas are willing to pay more for animal welfare than people in rural areas and that people who perceive the level of animal welfare in organic eggs as higher are willing to pay more not only for organic eggs but also for other labels indicating increased animal welfare. The age of the main buyer has no... |

Organic agriculture has potential for making a special contribution towards nature and landscape and the farmer plays an important part as decision maker. A qualitative interview study show that the farmer's production strategy often has an inpact on how he acts in relation to nature. At the same time it is difficult for the individual farmer to express concrete expectations of nature quality. |

Within organic farming there is a continued effort to close nutrient cycles in order to improve nutrient use efficiency for crop production while also minimizing environmental impacts. In Denmark a long-term crop rotation experiment on three soil types, i.e., Jyndevad (4.5% clay, 2.0% C), Foulum (8.8% clay, 3.8% C) and Flakkebjerg (15.5% clay, 1.7% C), provides a platform for studies of agronomic and environmental aspects of organic farming. Selected results from investigations at these sites are presented. In 2007 and 2008 one study determined soil microbial biomass N and mineralizable N on all three locations during the growing season in four selected rotations, three organic and one conventional; the objective was to evaluate the role of soil... |

For many years, disinfection of the soil by means of steaming has been a common method for eliminating weeds and fungal diseases. However, surface steaming of soil is a very energy-intensive process, and consequently, efforts have been made to develop a machine for narrow-band steaming of the soil under and around rows of cultivated plants prior to seeding. The use of this machine may achieve up to 90% energy savings, and will also reduce the amount of damage to the flora and fauna. A special test rig has been developed with the objective of obtaining new information about narrow-band soil steaming. The test rig consists of a revolving ditch, in which the soil can be heated by means of submerged steam jets. The rig is equipped with thermosensors for... |

This report is a mapping of the activities within public procurement of organic food for youth in Denmark, with a special focus on school meals. In Denmark, it is voluntary whether local municipalities or schools arrange school meals or not. Over time, more and more schools or municipalities choose to establish school meal systems, but these vary extensively in the way they are organized, what kind of food is served, and how they are financed. This report includes an overall mapping of the different ways of organizing school meals and their dissemination. Organic food has also been increasingly debated in relation to public procurement for children and youth. Whether the subject of organic food is discussed and implemented depends on the local values,... |

The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the factors which historically have shaped the evo-lution of the Danish organic food and farm sector, and to determine what its near future could be in terms of new supplier motivations for converting to organic, eventual changes in the farm structure and new modes of organizing the governance structure between farmers and retailers. From a slow introduction during the 1980s the development of the organic farms sector itself takes on speed during the 90’s getting broad societal recognition and political support. However, by the turning point of the millennium organic farming in Denmark had reached maturity and even started to decline in 2004 in terms of number of farms and land converting to organic... |

This report is the first mapping of the activities and state-of-the-art on public organic food procurement for youth. The report, on the Danish activities, comes together with similar reports from Finland, Italy and Norway. These four reports will inform a comparative analysis conducted by DTU in workpackage 2 of the iPOPY project. The major focus of the reports is school meals and the use of and potentials for organic products in this setting. But also other important settings than schools are included. The perspectives of the reports are on the policies and the policy processes influencing the extension of organic school meals. The report is produced within the project “innovative Public Organic food Procurement for Youth”, iPOPY, and will be updated... |

The health of weaned pigs should be described using several information sources to get an overall assessment of the health state in the herd. In this case study four organic pig herds each fattening between 800 and 3500 pigs per year provided data from clinical examination of a sample of animals, pathological findings at slaughter, post weaning mortality and medicine usage in the herd. Clinical symptoms were present in 8 – 18 % of the pigs, and 2 – 6 % of the pigs showed more serious symptoms of disease. At slaughter 10 – 17 % of the pigs got remarks for pathological lesions, primarily liver spots, abscesses and chronic pericarditis. The post weaning mortality varied between herds, while the usage of medicine was rather low in the herds. The herd health... |

The introduction and communication of new technologies in the food industries has given rise in the past to some scientific uncertainty that hampers informed choice. Here we draw upon the case of Genetically Modified (GM) technology and, in particular, on different types of GM food, to investigate consumers’ behavioural reactions to GM food as well as their willingness to pay for avoiding GM food in three EU countries, Denmark, GB and Spain in 2007. Our unique contribution lies in that our empirical analysis concerns two food products containing different characteristics. In particular, we compare consumers’ reactions to cornflakes (to represent a processed food) and tomatoes (to represent a 'fresh' food) juxtaposed with GM and conventionally produced... |
