Abstract Antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from pet dogs can be considered a potential threat of infection for the human population. Our objective was to characterize the resistance pattern, extended spectrum beta-lactamase production and genetic relatedness of multiresistant E. coli strains isolated from dogs (n = 134), their owners (n = 134), and humans who claim to have no contact with dogs (n = 44, control), searching for sharing of strains. The strains were assessed for their genetic relatedness by phylogenetic grouping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Multiresistant E. coli strains were isolated from 42 (31.3%) fecal samples from pairs of dogs and owners, totaling 84 isolates, and from 19 (43.1%) control group subjects. The... |

Blood specimens from clinically normal military dogs and their trainers, in Lara, Venezuela were screened for Anaplasma platys, A. phagocytophilum, or Ehrlichia ewingii using 16S rRNA PCR tests. Sixteen percent (7/43) of dog specimens were positive by A. platys PCR test followed by sequencing of the PCR products, and all human blood specimens [25] were negative. All specimens from these dogs and humans were PCR negative for E. ewingii or A. phagocytophilum. Twelve Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks removed from these dogs were negative for A. platys by reverse transcription PCR test. Almost the entire 16S rRNA gene (1,364 bp) and groESL operon (1,646 bp) sequences of A. platys isolated from a dog were determined, revealing that both sequences were closely... |

ABSTRACT: Orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) disintegrate rapidly in the mouth in seconds when placed at the tongue. The introduction of ODTs for dogs can address many needs, ranging from convenient dosing for dogs with dysphagia to extending life cycle of drugs. Now, different technologies are widely combined for developing ODTs. The combination makes ODTs have more properties, obtaining orally disintegrating sustained release tablets or orally disintegrating enteric tablets or enhancing the dissolution rate and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs and so on. The aim of this article is to give a comprehensive prospect to the application of ODTs to dogs, including ideal properties of drugs, indications of ODTs, considerations in developing ODTs... |

The objective of this research was to present an experimental model for the prolapse of the third eyelid gland in male, adult mongrel dogs by the use of a periorbital glandular support conjunctiva tissue resection followed by macro and microscopic assessments. Length, thickness and width of normal glands were statistically studied at baseline and then again after a period of 30 days of exposition. In relation to the experimental model, 84.21% of glands, which underwent the resection of the conjunctiva support tissue, support tissue, remained protusioned. There were significant differences between normal and protusioned glands. Protusioned glands were larger in respect to length, thickness and width. For the microscopy studies, two experimental groups were... |

The lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands produce the aqueous component of the preocular tear film. In this research, morphologic and morphometric assessments of the parenchyma and stroma of both lacrimal glands of healthy adult mongrel dogs were performed. Both lacrimal and third eyelid glands of fourteen dogs were collected, summing fifty-six samples. The macroscopic and morphometric data were statistically analyzed, according to the glandular type (lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands) and sexual dimorphism (male or female). The lacrimal glands were significantly larger and longer than the superficial glands of the third eyelid. Expressive morphometric differences of interlobular duct, lymphocytic infiltration, interlobular vessels and... |

Tear film disorders in dogs can be classified into quantitative or qualitative abnormalities, or both, and are commonly observed in daily clinical practice. Inadequate production of one or more tear film components can lead to variable degrees of ocular disorders, called keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs has several causes, but in most cases the disease is idiopathic, with T lymphocytes playing a role. In veterinary medicine, the diagnosis is made based on the results of the Schirmer tear test. In this article, we review aspects related to the etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs and discuss new therapeutic modalities for this disease. |

Cutaneous food allergy is an adverse immunological response, triggered by antigenic dietary components that may escape the digestion process and are absorbed intact through the gastrointestinal mucosa. In Brazil, there are only a few reports on cutaneous food allergy and antigenicity of food components used in pet food production. Thus, the aim of this report was to assess and describe data from medical records of canine patients diagnosed with cutaneous food allergy at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital from Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, in order to evaluate epidemiological and clinical aspects related to this skin problem. From 2007 to 2012, 29 dogs received the diagnosis of cutaneous food allergy after an eight-week hypoallergenic elimination trial. Among them,... |
