Resistance patterns, ESBL genes, and genetic relatedness of Escherichia coli from dogs and owners BJM
Carvalho,A.C.; Barbosa,A.V.; Arais,L.R.; Ribeiro,P.F.; Carneiro,V.C.; Cerqueira,A.M.F..
Abstract Antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from pet dogs can be considered a potential threat of infection for the human population. Our objective was to characterize the resistance pattern, extended spectrum beta-lactamase production and genetic relatedness of multiresistant E. coli strains isolated from dogs (n = 134), their owners (n = 134), and humans who claim to have no contact with dogs (n = 44, control), searching for sharing of strains. The strains were assessed for their genetic relatedness by phylogenetic grouping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Multiresistant E. coli strains were isolated from 42 (31.3%) fecal samples from pairs of dogs and owners, totaling 84 isolates, and from 19 (43.1%) control group subjects. The...

Prevalence and molecular analysis of Anaplasma platys in dogs in Lara, Venezuela BJM
Huang,Haibin; Unver,Ahmet; Perez,Miriam J.; Orellana,Nelson G.; Rikihisa,Yasuko.
Blood specimens from clinically normal military dogs and their trainers, in Lara, Venezuela were screened for Anaplasma platys, A. phagocytophilum, or Ehrlichia ewingii using 16S rRNA PCR tests. Sixteen percent (7/43) of dog specimens were positive by A. platys PCR test followed by sequencing of the PCR products, and all human blood specimens [25] were negative. All specimens from these dogs and humans were PCR negative for E. ewingii or A. phagocytophilum. Twelve Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks removed from these dogs were negative for A. platys by reverse transcription PCR test. Almost the entire 16S rRNA gene (1,364 bp) and groESL operon (1,646 bp) sequences of A. platys isolated from a dog were determined, revealing that both sequences were closely...

The application prospects and development trends of orally disintegrating tablets to dogs Ciência Rural
Yi,Tingting.
ABSTRACT: Orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) disintegrate rapidly in the mouth in seconds when placed at the tongue. The introduction of ODTs for dogs can address many needs, ranging from convenient dosing for dogs with dysphagia to extending life cycle of drugs. Now, different technologies are widely combined for developing ODTs. The combination makes ODTs have more properties, obtaining orally disintegrating sustained release tablets or orally disintegrating enteric tablets or enhancing the dissolution rate and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs and so on. The aim of this article is to give a comprehensive prospect to the application of ODTs to dogs, including ideal properties of drugs, indications of ODTs, considerations in developing ODTs...

Qualitative and quantitative tear film abnormalities in dogs Ciência Rural
Ribeiro,Alexandre Pinto; Brito,Fabio Luiz da Cunha; Martins,Bianca da Costa; Mamede,Fabrício; Laus,José Luiz.
Tear film disorders in dogs can be classified into quantitative or qualitative abnormalities, or both, and are commonly observed in daily clinical practice. Inadequate production of one or more tear film components can lead to variable degrees of ocular disorders, called keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs has several causes, but in most cases the disease is idiopathic, with T lymphocytes playing a role. In veterinary medicine, the diagnosis is made based on the results of the Schirmer tear test. In this article, we review aspects related to the etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs and discuss new therapeutic modalities for this disease.
