Reproductive performance of the Mesa silverside (Chirostoma jordani Woolman, 1894) under natural and controlled photoperiods Biocell
Arredondo-Figueroa,José Luis; Núñez-García,Laura Georgina; Heredia-Guzmán,Paloma Adriana; Ponce-Palafox,Jesús T..
Chirostoma jordani is a native annual species inhabiting lacustrine waters of the Central Mexico Plateau. It is widely distributed and is currently facing high environmental pressures. Five experiments were performed to study the reproductive performance of this species. Four of the experiments were conducted in 270-L indoor recirculation tanks. Two males and one female at the first stage of reproduction were included in each test. A photoperiod of 14 light hours and 10 dark hours was used. In a fifth experiment, 10 females and 15 males were kept in an outdoor 3,000-L recirculation tank under natural photoperiod. The number of spawns, fertilised eggs and 30-day-old juveniles were counted and the survival rate was calculated. The results indicated...

Reproductive biology of Synallaxis albescens (Aves: Furnariidae) in the cerrado of central Brazil Biota Neotropica
Marini,Miguel Ângelo; Rodrigues,Sheila Silva; Silveira,Mariana Batista; Greeney,Harold Francis.
Understanding the causes and consequences of variation in reproductive strategies is a central theme in studies of avian life history evolution. This study describes the reproductive biology of Synallaxis albescens (Furnariidae) in the cerrado biome of central Brazil. We monitored 35 nests during the 2003 to 2011 breeding seasons, visiting them every 2-4 days. Synallaxis albescens breeds from mid-September to mid-January, builds a retort-shaped nest, and generally lays three immaculate white eggs. Eggs weighed 1.75 g and measured 19.7 by 14.4 mm. Most nests studied were in open cerrado or shrub grassland at an average height above the ground of 0.3 m, with a preference for Davilla elliptica (Dilleniaceae) shrubs as a nesting substrate. Incubation period...

Extracts of Ascaris suum egg and adult worm share similar immunosuppressive properties BJMBR
Souza,V.M.O.; Faquim-Mauro,E.L.; Macedo,M.S..
Adult Ascaris suum body extract (Asc) prepared from male and female worms (with stored eggs) down-regulates the specific immune response of DBA/2 mice to ovalbumin (OA) and preferentially stimulates a Th2 response to its own components, which is responsible for the suppression of the OA-specific Th1 response. Here, we investigated the participation of soluble extracts prepared from male or female worms or from eggs (E-Asc) in these immunological events. Extracts from either sex (1 mg/animal) or E-Asc (0.35 or 1 mg protein/animal) suppressed the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction (60-85%), proliferative response (50-70%), IL-2 and IFN-gamma secretion (below detection threshold) and IgG1 antibody production (70-90%) of DBA/2 mice to OA. A dose of...

Campylobacter sp in eggs from cloacal swab positive breeder hens BJM
Fonseca,Belchiolina Beatriz; Soncini,Ricardo Alfredo; Gimarães,Adelia Rodrigues; Rossi,Daise Aparecida.
Campylobacter sp is a microaerophilic, thermotolerating Gram negative bacterium, known to be one of the main causes of food-borne human infections. Among the foods that carry these microorganisms, the chicken is outstanding. In Brazil, a large chicken exporting country, few researches are conducted about their prevalence in breeder hens and the transmission through eggs. The aim of this research was to verify the presence of Campylobacter sp in the shells and within the eggs from positive cloacal swab breeder hens. Microbiological analyses were made on cloacal swabs of 140 weighed breeder hens. The positive breeder hens were set aside and in a total of 244 of their eggs, Campylobacter sp was present in macerated shells and yolk contents during 7 weeks. Out...

Occurrence of Salmonella sp. and coagulase-positive staphylococci in raw eggs and Coalho cheese: comparative study between two cities of Brazil's northeast BJM
Evêncio-Luz,L; Lima-Filho,J.V.; Evêncio-Neto,J..
Microbiological analyses of chicken eggs in Recife and Salvador have shown a high occurrence of Salmonella in the egg shells and yolks. Likewise, the occurrence of Salmonella plus coagulase-positive staphylococci in Coalho cheese reached alarming levels. The data revealed a significant risk of infections and intoxications from consuming these foods in the cities.

Salinity on artificial reproduction of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) Ciência Rural
Martins,Gabriel Bernardes; Piedras,Sérgio Renato Noguez; Pouey,Juvêncio Luís Osório Fernandes; Bongalhardo,Denise Calisto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
Attempting to improve reproduction performance and ichthyo prophylaxis, this study evaluated the effects of maintaining silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) broodstock in different saline concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8‰) on gametes quality and reproductive viability. The results showed that sperm percent motility did not change between 0 and 4‰, but it was reduced at 6‰, and sperm became immotile at 8‰ salinity. Sperm motility time was increased (almost five fold) at 6‰. Salinities up to 4‰ prevented fertilization and hatching, proving their deleterious effects on oocytes and embryos. Therefore, media up to 4‰ salinity may be an alternative for icthyo prophylaxis, although fertilization and incubation must be done in freshwater medium
