The objective of this work is to determine factors that explain the alteration of the participation of the Brazilian soybean agro-industry and industry in the international trade. Particularly, it intends to analyze the Brazilian competitiveness in the exports of each segment of the soybean agro-industry. For this, the Constant-Market-Share (CMS) model was used, through which, the discrepancies were computed in the potential and effectual variation of the Brazilian exports of soybeans, soybean meal and oil, disaggregating them in these components: market size, market distribution and competitiveness. The market size was shown positive for the three analyzed segments, demonstrating that the expansion of the world demand of soybean and its by-products it was... |

This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 1999-2009 period by using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to be improving for the next ten years. World demands for both common and durum wheat are expected to grow faster than world production of the two wheat classes, resulting in gradual increases in prices of the wheats, which are predicted to increase 36% for durum wheat and 23% for common wheat for the 1999-2009 period. However, the prices are expected to recover slowly for the next 2-3 years. World trade volumes of... |

The general objective of this work was to analyze the state of technology, inocuity and commercialization of cantaloupe melon of private farmers in Mapimí, Dgo. County, Mexico, to identify opportunities and constraints to export melon of Mapimí to the United States market. To gather information on technology, safety and marketing, was designed and implemented a survey of major producers in the Mapimí County, which by their production volumes have greater export potential. In general it was found that private farmers of Mapimí have a good technological level emphasizing the use of hybrid seeds, plastic mulch, drip tape and pollinating bees. In the case of inocuity producers have an idea of the subject of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good... |

This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2003-2013 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to improve over the next 10 years after the current over-supply is reduced. World demand for sugar is expected to grow faster than world supply, resulting in Caribbean sugar prices gradually increasing from 7.57 cents/lb in 2003 to 8.75 cents/lb in 2013. The U.S. wholesale price of sugar is projected to increase from 25.35 cents/lb in 2003 to 27.0 cents/lb in 2013, if the United States maintains its sugar programs. The CAFTA... |

An attempt is made to evaluate the competitiveness of the fisheries and aquaculture industries of some Mediterranean countries. Revealed Comparative Advantage indices of Italian, French, Greek, Portuguese and Spanish fish products are estimated, in order to gain new insights regarding the position of these products in the market of the European Union, in terms of competitiveness. In addition, this study sheds light on the evolution of competitiveness over the last decade. The estimated Comparative Advantage indices reveal that there is a wide range of competitiveness among fish products in Mediterranean countries. In addition, almost all countries alter their competitive ranking throughout the study period. Consequently, Mediterranean fisheries and... |

The signing of the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between the European Union (EU) and the African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) nations dominated the multilateral trade agenda in late 2007 and early 2008. While the Caribbean nations signed the full EPAs, some of the African countries only singed interim agreements with the EU and a number of West African countries chose not to sign any EPA. Using the case of Botswana’s export markets, especially in agriculture, it is argued that the interim Southern African Development Community (SADC) EPA, which was signed by Botswana and her neighbours, with the exception of South Africa, may have been economically sensible in protecting Botswana’s rural poor, at least in the short run. By tracing trade flows from the... |

Although Greek wine is a high quality product, it is not well known in the international marketplace and it has not a recognised brand name. The aim of the current research is to examine the barriers to the export of Greek wine. In-depth Personal interviews were undertaken with producers, managers and people involved in the Greek wine industry. Participants provided information about the current situation and their projections about future. This research is based on qualitative methods. According to the results of the research the barriers could be separated into three basic categories, logistic and financial barriers, marketing and promotion barriers and policy barriers. This research offers Greek wine export managers and people involved in wine industry... |

Modernization of traditional agriculture entalls increased participation of the smallholder sector in the exchange economy. The achievement of this participation requires an open trade regime, domestic policies that ensure against market failures and public policy that effectively permits use of a new production technology for sustained growth. To open up these opportunities to small farmers, investment in rural intrastate is essential, as is investment in education that will enable these farmers to participate as entrepreneurs in the growth process must stimulate employment and increased returns to land. Nontraditional vegetables for export have a higher labor content and therefore promise to help foster rural modernization. In this study of... |

Contract farming is seen by proponents as a way to raise small-farm income by delivering technology and market information to small farmers, incorporating them into remunerative new markets. Critics, however, see it as a strategy for agribusiness firms to pass production risk to farmers, taking advantage of an unequal bargaining relationship. There is also concern that contract farming will worsen rural income inequality by favoring larger farmers. This study examines these issues in Shandong Province, China, using survey data collected from 162 apple and green onion farmers and interviews with four contracting firms in 2005. Using a probit model to estimate participation in a contract-farming scheme, we find little evidence that contracting firms prefer... |

This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2007-2017 period using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to remain strong for the next ten years. World demand for both common and durum wheat are expected to remain strong. The price levels in 2007, due to high corn demand in the ethanol industry, should be maintained since increases in production are limited due to land constraints in most countries. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to expand, but trade volume of durum wheat may grow faster than that... |

This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2006-2016 period using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to improve for the next nine years. World demand for both common and durum wheat are expected to remain strong, however, the current higher price levels in 2006 due to weather conditions will not be maintained as production is expected to return to normal levels in 2007. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to expand, but trade volume of durum wheat may grow faster than that of common wheat. |

The objective of this work was to estimate and to analyze the elasticity of substitution between Brazil, the USA and Argentina in the soybeans exports in the selected importers markets. This fact is important, considering that, it increases the integration of the world economies, placing in prominence of the adaptability to the world demand, as a fundamental factor for the exports expansion. Like this, given the economical relevance of the Brazilian exports of soybeans it was looked for, specifically, to verify the substitution possibility between the soybeans exports of Brazil, the USA and Argentina. After accomplishment of Dickey-Fuller expanded tests (ADF) for unit root, and Trace test and Max-eingevalue test for co-integration, the Error Correction... |
