Leaching of nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium in a sandy soil cultivated with sugarcane 86
Oliveira,Mauro Wagner de; Trivelin,Paulo Cesar Ocheuze; Boaretto,Antônio Enedi; Muraoka,Taskashi; Mortatti,Jeferson.
A lysimeter experiment was carried out with sugarcane aiming to evaluate the leaching of nitrogen derived from either urea (15N) or the soil/sugarcane crop residues. The leaching of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ was also evaluated. The experiment was a factorial 2x4. The influencing factors were: firstly, the differential addition of two kinds of sugarcane remains to the soil, simulating conditions of cane- plantation renewal after the cane crop harvest, with and without previous straw removal by burning; secondly, four doses of N: 0, 30, 60, and 90 kg ha-1. During the experimental period the total volume of water received by the sugarcane-soil system was 2,015 mm, with 1,255 mm as precipitation and 760 mm as irrigation. The loss of N by leaching from the fertilizer...

Adoption of Maize Production Technologies in the Coastal Lowlands of Kenya 31
Wekesa, E.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; Danda, Milton Kengo; De Groote, Hugo.
Maize is the major food crop grown in the coastal region of Kenya and constitutes a major component of the diet of the population in the region. However, average yields are far below the potential for the region and low production levels create serious food deficits. Over the years, new technologies have been introduced but adoption has remained low, especially for fertilizer. This paper examined current maize-farming practices and technological and socioeconomic factors that influenced adoption in the Kilifi and Kwale Districts of the Coast Province, that together account for half of maize production in the region. The study found low adoption levels for improved maize varieties and technology, especially fertilizer, among farmers in the area. Farmers...

A balança comercial do agronegócio brasileiro de 1989 a 2005 31
Barros, Geraldo Sant'Ana de Camargo; Silva, Simone Fioritti.
This study aims to analyze the agribusiness contribution to Brazil’s trade balance. A new classification of the agribusiness trade balance was proposed and used to analyze the aspects of the exported products –agricultural products, products of animal origin, industrialized foods and imported inputs – represented by fertilizers. Imports and exports vector autoregression models were used to explain the behavior of these variables. An increase of 1% in the attractiveness – product of the exchange rate by the international prices – boosts immediately the exports of non processed agricultural products by 1.71%, stabilizing at 2% after some trimesters. The attractiveness explains 60 to 74% of the forecast error variances of these exportats. It is noted that an...

Research Investments and Market Structure in the Food Processing, Agricultural Input, and Biofuel Industries Worldwide 31
Fuglie, Keith O.; Heisey, Paul W.; King, John L.; Day-Rubenstein, Kelly A.; Schimmelpfennig, David E.; Wang, Sun Ling.
Meeting growing global demand for food, fiber, and biofuel requires robust investment in agricultural research and development (R&D) from both public and private sectors. This study examines global R&D spending by private industry in seven agricultural input sectors, food manufacturing, and biofuel and describes the changing structure of these industries. In 2007 (the latest year for which comprehensive estimates are available), the private sector spent $19.7 billion on food and agricultural research (56 percent in food manufacturing and 44 percent in agricultural input sectors) and accounted for about half of total public and private spending on food and agricultural R&D in high-income countries. In R&D related to biofuel, annual...

Fertilizer use on Smallholder Farm in Eastern Province, Zambia 31
Dayanatha, Jha; Behjat, Hojjati.
IN Sub-Sahara Africa, Which so far has benefited little from the green revolution. the adoption of high-yielding maize had great potential for closing the gap between food demand and supply. To bring about this transformation, fertilizer is essential for realizing the yield potential of hybrid maize while sustaining the fertility of Africa's fragile land. This study of Eastern Province, Zambia, shows that use of fertilizer on traditional varieties can also be a catalyst for agricultural growth. This work is part of an extensive body of research on adoption of new agricultural technology carried out by IFPRi in Asia and Africa. The study was undertaken in collaboration with several Zambia institutions, including the Rural Development Studies...

Improved inputs use and productivity in Uganda’s maize sub-sector 31
Godfrey, Okoboi.
This paper used the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) data set of 2005/06 to examine the productivity of improved inputs used by smallholder maize farmers in Uganda. Yield and gross profit functions were estimated with the stochastic frontier model. Results revealed a significant effect improved inputs use on yield but not gross profit. Moreover, farmers who planted recycled seed (of improved variety) without fertilizer obtained lower yield but the highest gross profit. Furthermore, if the opportunity cost of own land and labour inputs in maize production were imputed, overall, farmers made economic losses. Based on the prevailing farmers’ production technology and market conditions, maize cultivation in the range of 2‐3 ha was found to give optimum...

Determinantes da Escolha de Arranjos Institucionais: Evidências na Comercialização de Fertilizantes para Soja 31
Leme, Maristela Franco Paes; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
Transactions among agribusiness agents are not exclusively carried out on the market, being also governed by alternative types of institutional arrangements, some of which determined upon contractual agreement. In the fertilizers sector, the companies intensified the offer of input packages to farmers, more specifically to soybean producers, object of this article. In order to acquire the fertilizers, these producers may choose to use their own financial resources, to obtain resources through financing with third parties, or they may recur to the said packages, which include soybean and financial resources in addition to the fertilizers, referred by the soybean producers to as “exchange”, since they acquire fertilizer paying with soybean for future...

ADOPTION OF MAIZE AND WHEAT TECHNOLOGIES IN EASTERN AFRICA: A SYNTHESIS OF THE FINDINGS OF 22 CASE STUDIES 31
Doss, Cheryl R.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; De Groote, Hugo.
This paper synthesizes the findings of 22 micro-level studies on technology adoption carried out by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) with national agricultural research systems in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from 1996-1999. The authors found that technology adoption is taking place across Eastern Africa but considerable scope remains to improve the productivity of smallholder agriculture in higher potential regions with high levels of adoption. Extension was the variable most highly correlated with technology adoption, and extension services continue to play an important role in disseminating information on new varieties and how to manage them. Despite the usefulness of the micro-study results, especially for priority...

Rosado, Thiago Lopes; Gontijo, Ivoney; Almeida, Marcelo Suzart; Chambela Neto, Alberto; Simon, Carla Penha.
Nitrogen influences numerous physiological and morphological traits of forage grasses, which ultimately interfere directly with production and forage quality. Aimed to study was to evaluate the production of dry matter and the number of tillers of Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça grown with different sources and levels of applied nitrogen. The experiment was conducted at the Federal Institute of the Espírito Santo, Campus of Santa Teresa. The experimental design consisted of a randomised block design with three replicates in a 3 x 6 factorial design and three nitrogenous fertilizers (urea, ammonium sulphate and calcium nitrate), which were applied at six different levels (0, 120, 240, 360, 480 and 600 kg ha-1) during the experimental period, for a total of 54...

Water quality and head loss in irrigation filters 63
Ribeiro,Túlio Assunção Pires; Paterniani,José Euclides Stipp; Airold,Rogério Pereira da Silva; Silva,Marcelo Jacomini Moreira da.
Among the irrigation systems used today, trickle irrigation is one of the most efficient methods. This research, conducted by means of field tests, had the objective of comparing head loss evolution on water filtration with a disc filter (130 mum) and a non-woven synthetic fabric filter used in a drip irrigation system. The test consisted of fertirrigation with organic fertilizer, and chemical treatment of the water with sodium hypochlorite. Physical, chemical, and biological parameters were analyzed, such as: pH, turbidity, suspended solids, dissolved solids, EC, hardness, Langelier index, total iron, manganese, sulfides, algae, and bacteria. The water source used in this experiment was from an open reservoir, where an experimental trickle irrigation...

Absorption and mobility of radio-labelled calcium in chili pepper plants and sweet cherry trees 63
Bonomelli,Claudia; Alcalde,Carolina; Aguilera,Camila; Videla,Ximena; Rojas-Silva,Ximena; Nario,Adriana; Fernandez,Victoria.
ABSTRACT: Calcium (Ca) is often supplied to crop species to prevent the occurrence of Ca–related disorders. Mechanisms of Ca absorption and transport are not fully understood and the effectiveness of root and/or foliar Ca fertilization may be variable. To characterize the rate of Ca absorption and transport, trials were developed with chili pepper and sweet cherry plants, using 45CaCl2 as a tracer. The Ca treatments supplied were: (1) No 45Ca (control); (2) 45Ca soil application; (3) 45Ca supply to basal leaves, and (4) 45Ca application to apical leaves. After two months, plants were harvested for biomass and Ca content determination. The recovery of 45Ca in different plant parts was measured with a liquid scintillation counter and leaf traits were...
