L'huître et l'ostréiculture ArchiMer
Trochon, Pierre.

Stock characteristics of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in France: a review ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick.
The general characteristics of the main salmon (Salmo salar L.) stocks in the Massif armoricain (Brittany and Lower Normandy), in the Loire-Allier and in the Adour-Gaves-Nive have been summarized. Due to the poor quality of the previous fishing statistics, there is no clear picture of the historical evolution of the salmon stock. However, a dramatic decrease in the endemic range of Atlantic salmon in France can be shown since the mid-18th century a nd more particularly during the last 50 years. The lack of precise informations describing the size of the catches and the levels of exploitation at sea and in the estuaries make it impossible to estimate the impact that exploitation has led on the evolution of salmon stocks. The mean age of salmon in freshwater...

ArchiMer
El Gharbi, Salwa; Rousset, Viviane; Raibaut, André.
Lernaeenicus sprattae is a blood-feeding copepod parasite of the pilchard, Sardian pilchardus . The larval stages of L. sprattae attach to the skin or the fins of the larval fish when the fish enter the lagoons. The mature, and in some cases ovigerous females of L.sprattae seek out the base of the fins or directly implant in the eye of juvenile or adult pilchards. The copepod has a particularly serious effect at the site of infection: its feeding has a severe effect on the fish. The pilchard returns to its breeding grounds in the open sea at the end of summer; this migration allows the copepod to complete its reproductive cycle and a new cycle of infestation is able to begin.

PCB, PCDD/F and PBDE levels and profiles in crustaceans from the coastal waters of Brittany and Normandy (France) ArchiMer
Bodin, Nathalie; Abarnou, Alain; Fraisse, D; Defour, S; Loizeau, Veronique; Le Guellec, Anne-marie; Philippon, Xavier.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were analysed in the muscle of various edible marine crustaceans (spider crab, edible crab, velvet swimming crab and Norway lobster) from the Brittany and Normandy coasts (France). The highest concentrations were measured in species collected from Antifer (Seine Bay). PCB and PBDE patterns in crustacean muscles were similar and independent of the geographical area with the predominance of the high chlorinated PCBs (CB 15 3, 138, 118 and 180), and of a few PBDE congeners (BDE47, BDE99, WE 100 and BDE28). Oppositely, dioxin contamination differed with site. The major component in crustaceans from the Seine Bay was...

The specific analysis of preys allows to determine the composition of cuttlefishes alimentary diet in natural conditions. This analysis based on exploitation of stomachal contents shows a majority of Fishes and Brachyura Crustaceans consumed. The alimentary diet with a Fish dominance in winter area (off Belle-Ille island) becomes a Crustacea dominance when adult cuttlefishes come in Morbihan Bay, in March, for reproduction. As for newly-born, they eat exclusively Crustacean Amphipoda and Macrura.

Polymorphisme enzymatique de trois populations de palourdes (Ruditapes decussatus L.) de Bretagne ArchiMer
Moraga, D; Lucas, A.
The three populations studied were situated on the west coast of Brittany: to the North (Diben), to the West (Tinduff) to the South (Ile Tudy). 25 to 57 analysis were carried out on each of the 19 enzymatic systems where 27 loci had been recognized. Six of which were not interpreted, 10 were monomorphic, 11 polymorphic. Among these latter, the analysis of 4 of the loci were not used as the determination was too confused. Therefore, the comparison of the 3 populations was carried out on 7 polymorphic loci (EST3, HK2, LAP2, MDH1, MDH2, GPI, PGM2). Only a rare allele showed one qualitative difference; this coupled with slight quantitative differences in the distribution of the alleles did not permit to distinguish the three various populations. The genetic...

ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Maurer, Daniele; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Dumas, Franck.
Introduction and objectives of the study: Understanding the operation modes of the coastline systems requires the study of the hydrodynamics responsible for transporting the whole of the chemical and biological elements of which they are composed. The idea of maintaining a close connexion between the physics, biology, geology and chemistry of the oceans is not new, and was for that matter the subject of a note in the first report of the International Council for the Study of the Oceans (ICSS) in 1902 (Sverdrup et al., 1954): " it was seen from the beginning that the study of the physical conditions, of the chemical nature of the ocean waters, of the currents, etc., was of the greatest importance for the investigation of the problems connected with life,...

Waechter, Magali.
Summer mortality has been observed on oyster spat Crassostrea gigas since 1991 on french coasts. In our study, we deseribed symptoms observed during the mortality, especially adductor muscle weakness and we isolated strains on Zobell medium and TCBS from moribund spat. Strains isolated during a high mortality (60 %) were selected by experimental pathology on spat. Inoculation by bath led us to select a pathogenic strain (TNEMF6) for oyster spat. Phenotypic identification, phylogenetic study on 16S rDNA and quantitative DNA/DNA hybridisation showed that this strain belongs to Vibrio splendidus biovar II. Phenotyping and ribotyping with strains isolated during the study showed that only TNNIII7 and TNMB5 are similar to the pathogenic strain TNEMF6....

Metal bioaccumulation and physiological condition of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in two shellfish basins and a marina in Normandy (northwest France) ArchiMer
Seguin, A.; Caplat, C.; Serpentini, A.; Lebel, J. M.; Menet-nedelec, Florence; Costil, K..
A 5-month experiment combining a geochemical survey of metals with a bioaccumulation study in batches of Crassostrea gigas was conducted in two shellfish farming areas and a marina in Normandy (France). Various endpoints at different levels of biological organization were studied. ROCCH data showed differences in biota contamination between the two shellfish areas but the present study revealed only slight differences in metallic contamination and biomarkers. By contrast, significantly different values were recorded in the marina in comparison with the two other sites. Indeed, higher levels of Cd, Cu and Zn were measured in the oysters from the marina, and these oysters also showed a poorer physiological condition (e.g., condition index, histopathological...

New observations on the eutrophication of the Gulf of Lion due to the nutrient input by the Rhone River ArchiMer
Coste, A; Cadenes, A; Minas, H.
During the cruise EURHOGLI (Eutrophication by the Rhone of the Gulf of Lion) of the R.V. Le Noroit , a grid of stations covering the dilution area of the Rhone River has been carried out two times with a time interval of about two weeks. An exceptional growth during the two months preceding the cruise, has produced an important dilution effect over a wide spread areas. The absence of nutrients demonstrates their general consumption by biological activity. The tracer properties of the nutrient can be observed only in a small area near the mouth of the river. Nutrients are becoming the tracer of this dilution, and a great development of chlorophyll associated to this same area, show that nearly all the biological activity of nutrient assimilation is...

Robert, Jean-michel.
Previously, Navicula ostrearia B. has been described only from the Marennes-Oleron district of the Atlantic coast of France. However, this pennate diatom is also present In the Bay of Bourgneuf where breeding of green-gilled oysters were recognized in sea basins called oyster ponds. A short description of observations made with the optical microscope precedes description of high magnification examination of the frustule made with the scanning electron microscope. This combination of techniques shows a polymorphism between the external and internal surfaces of diatom valves.

Estimation of Age, Growth and Fishing Season of a Palaeolithic Population of Grayling (Thymallus thymallus) Using Scale Analysis ArchiMer
Guillaud, Emilie; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig; Bearez, Philippe.
The fish remains sampled from archaeological sites are generally the result of human food refuse; therefore, the study of retrieved fish scales may provide reliable information on the season of capture and on paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental changes. Among Western European freshwater fishes, the grayling, Thymallus thymallus¸ has the most easily recognizable scales and is a commonly recovered species from Paleolithic contexts. This study, therefore, is based on the growth pattern analysis of modern and archaeological scales from grayling specimens. The modern specimens were collected monthly in France (n = 22), Switzerland (n = 16), Finland (n = 20) and Sweden (n = 10). Scale growth patterns were measured using numerical analysis to a high accuracy. The...

Production de Saumon Atlantique (Salmo salar L.) Juveniles et Adultes sur un Ruisseau Pepiniere de Bretagne Nord (France) a Partir d'une Souche Irlandaise. ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
An extensive restocking experiment has been undertaken in 1977 on a tributary of Elorn river in the framework of an Atlantic salmon management program of this river of northern Brittany. The results gathered during this experiment permitted the analysis of S. salar production during the juvenile and adult stages from immersion of unfed fry of Irish origin in small nursery streams. The annual production during the first year represented 72% of the total production of two years of growth. Adult runs into the nursery stream were observed between mid-November and mid-December. These runs were initiated by high increases of flow rates of the nursery stream. The whole of the adult population is constituted by late grilses whose female. Their rate of return was...

Benthic metabolism over the emersion - Immersion alternation in sands colonized by the invasive Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Migne, Aline; Trigui, Rima Jihane; Davoult, Dominique; Desroy, Nicolas.
The effect of an invasive infaunal suspension-feeding bivalve, the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, on benthic inorganic carbon and nutrient fluxes was examined through in situ incubations. Measurements were performed in spring and summer on a tidal sandflat of the Rance estuary (south part of the Western English Channel) colonized by the Manila clam after its deliberate introduction in the 1990's. Benthic inorganic carbon fluxes were measured using light and dark benthic chambers both at emersion and immersion. Benthic nutrient fluxes were measured using dark benthic chambers at immersion. Inorganic carbon (IC) and ammonium sediment release under darkness at immersion reached 5.60 mmol m−2 h−1 and 441 μmol m−2 h−1 respectively for a clam density of...
