Enhanced degradation of metalaxyl in agricultural soils of São Paulo State, Brazil PAB
Papini,Solange; Andréa,Mara Mercedes de.
This work investigated the effect of repeated applications on enhanced degradation of metalaxyl in two different agricultural soils used for cultivation of orange and lemon from Casa Branca and Itapetininga districts of São Paulo State, Brazil. Soil samples were collected from areas repeatedly treated with commercial ridomil 50GR for six successive years, and from other areas never exposed to this fungicide. At the laboratory, soil samples received a 14C-metalaxyl solution and its degradation was studied through radiometric techniques to measure biomineralization and recovery of extractable- and soil-bound products. Enhanced degradation was verified only in one soil, although partial degradation and mineralization of the fungicide were detected in both...

Chemical Use Reductions in Urban Fringe Agriculture AgEcon
Adelaja, Adesoji O.; Sullivan, Kevin P.; Hailu, Yohannes G.; Govindasamy, Ramu.
Using an augmented profit function framework designed to account for externalities related to chemical use in agriculture, this paper explains the chemical use choices of farmers in an urban fringe farming environment. It further estimates empirical logit models of reduced insecticide, fungicide, herbicide, and fertilizer usage. Results suggest that farmers who perceive their regulatory environment to be strict, who have experienced right-to-farm conflicts, and who have farms larger in size are more likely to reduce their chemical use over time, vis-à-vis other farmers. The results also suggest the importance of other farm structural and business climate factors in determining chemical use reduction choices.

COST-BENEFIT AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF FUNGICIDES FOR SUPPRESSION OF FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT (SCAB) IN HARD RED SPRING WHEAT IN 1997 AgEcon
Haugen, Ronald H.; Aakre, Dwight G..
A cost-benefit and statistical analysis of fungicides for suppression of fusarium head blight (scab) in hard red spring wheat was completed on data from physical experiments done in Fargo and Carrington, North Dakota in 1997. Various fungicide data were analyzed by applying revenues and costs to the experiment yields to determine net revenue. The net revenues were analyzed statistically using a one-way ANOVA (analysis of variance). No statistical difference was found between the control and other treatment with the Fargo data. There was a statistical difference between the control and other treatments with the Carrington data. The data sets were combined and analyzed; location proved to be a significant factor.

Chemical and biological treatments of castor bean seeds: effects on germination, emergence and associated microorganisms Rev. bras. sementes
Marroni,Igor Villela; Moura,Andrea Bittencourt; Ueno,Bernardo.
The effect of chemical and biological treatments on castor bean emergence, seedling vigor, dry matter production, and also the control of microorganisms associated with seeds of the AL Guarany 2002 and Lyra cultivars, was evaluated. The products tested were carbendazim + thiram, carboxin + thiram and a product based on Trichoderma. Total seed and seedling emergence were evaluated at 27 days after sowing whereas dry matter production was verified for plants removed 45 days after sowing. The Guarany 2002 AL cultivar had a higher incidence of microorganisms than the Lyra cultivar. The chemical treatment was 100% effective in controlling fungi but the biological treatment did not reduce microorganism incidence on the seeds. Chemical treatment resulted in...

High level of copper application to soil and leaves reduce the growth and yield of tomato plants Scientia Agricola
Sonmez,Sahriye; Kaplan,Mustafa; Sonmez,Namik Kemal; Kaya,Harun; Uz,Ilker.
Copper-containing fertilizers, fungicides and bactericides are extensively used in greenhouses in Turkey. Informations on effects of these applications to plants are scarce. The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of Cu application to a calcareous soil and to leaves on the yield and growth of tomato plants. Cu was first applied to soil as CuSO4.5H2O in three different levels (0, 1000, and 2000 mg Cu kg-1) and then to leaves in three different frequencies (no application, biweekly and weekly) using two cupric fungicides (Cu oxychloride, and Cu salts of fatty and rosin acids) in pot experiments carried out in a computer-controlled greenhouse. Total yield, fruit number, dry root weight and plant height decreased with increasing Cu application...

Chemigation with benomyl and fluazinam and their fungicidal effects in soil for white mold control on dry beans Trop. Plant Pathol.
Vieira,Rogério F.; Pinto,Cleide M. F.; Paula Júnior,Trazilbo J. de.
The effectiveness of fungicides in controlling white mold (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) of dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) was evaluated when they were applied through irrigation water directly onto the plants or only to the soil. Two field trials were installed in April 1998 and April 1999 in Viçosa, MG. Trials were conducted as a (2 x 3) + 1 factorial: two fungicides x three application modes + one untreated control. The fungicides were benomyl (1.0 kg a.i. ha-1) and fluazinam (0.5 l a.i. ha-1). The three application modes were: (a) by backpack sprayer (667 l ha-1), (b) by garden watering-cans simulating sprinkler irrigation with 35,000 l ha-1 of water, and (c) by garden watering-cans applying water between the rows and near the soil surface in 35,000 l ha-1...

EFFECTS OF FUNGICIDES ON ENDOPHYTIC FUNGI AND PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN SEEDLINGS OF A TROPICAL TREE, Guarea guidonia (Meliaceae) Acta biol.Colomb.
GAMBOA GAITÁN,MIGUEL A.; WEN,SHIYUN; FETCHER,NED; BAYMAN,PAUL.
Endophytes are microorganisms that live within healthy plant tissues, and include fungi and bacteria. They can be mutualists, comensals or even latent pathogens. Presence of these endosymbionts may affect host physiology, for example by consuming products of photosynthesis (endophytes are heterotrophs) or producing toxic metabolites. In this work two fungicides were used to eliminate fungal endophytes from seedlings of Guarea guidonia. Lightsaturated photosynthesis (Amax) was measured in endophytefree plants and compared with control plants. Each fungicide killed different fungal endosymbionts. Phomopsis was more susceptible to benomyl while Colletotrichum was more susceptible to propiconazole. Although suggestive, values of Amax were not significantly...
