Improving disease resistance of pea through selection at the plant-soil interface Organic Eprints
Wille, Lukas; Hohmann, Pierre; Messmer, Monika; Studer, Bruno.
Pea (Pisum sativum L.) belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae). Legumes form mutualistic symbiosis with nitrogen fixing rhizobacteria and, thereby, are able to improve soil fertility. Legume crops are important protein source for food and feed and contribute to the nitrogen demand of succeeding crops. Despite their importance, cultivation of cool-season legumes in temperate zones remains below expectations due to low and unstable yields. Soil fatigue is caused by a complex of different soil-borne pathogens and thought to be the main reason for yield losses, especially in pea. Plants have the ability to actively shape the community of root associated microbes through root exudations. Evidence is growing that there is considerable genetic variation for plant...

Steigerung der Anthracnoseresistenz von Rotklee durch rekurrente Selektion Organic Eprints
Jacob, Irene; Hartmann, Stephan; Schubiger, Franz Xaver; Struck, Christine.

Marker assisted breeding and mass selection of wheat composite cross populations Organic Eprints
Steffan, Philipp; Borgen, Anders; Lazzaro, Mariaterresa; Backes, Gunter; Rasmussen, Søren Kjærgaard.
Utilising diverse populations instead of single line varieties is expected to lead to a number of advantages in cereal production. These include reduced epidemics of plant diseases, improved weed competition and better exploitation of soil nutrients, resulting in improved yield stability. However, a number of challenges must be met before diverse wheat populations can be introduced into commercial wheat production: one of these is the development of breeding technologies based on mass selection which enable breeders and farmers to improve specific traits in populations and maintain diversity at the same time.

Anfälligkeit von Winterweizen- und Spelzweizensorten gegenüber Steinbrand (Tilletia caries) Organic Eprints
Voit, Benno; Bauermeister, Regula; Killermann, Berta.
15 wheat and 4 spelt varieties suitable for ecological farming have been cultivated and tested for susceptibility to common bunt of wheat (T. caries). The 2-years randomized field trials have been carried out at 1 site, with 4 replicates and 10 m row length on naturally infested fields with T. caries. Sowing, weed control and harvesting was done by hand. The number of infested ears has been counted and the number of spores per kernel or spelt has been determined according ISTA. The infestation by wheat of the highest (Elixer, Meister) and lowest (Butaro, Florian) susceptible wheat varieties was higher than 10,000 and lower than 1,000 spores per kernel, respectively. The four spelt varieties had the lowest infestation significantly below 100 spores per...

Rhizosphere microbiome and disease resistance - Project presentation Organic Eprints
Hohmann, Pierre; Wille, Lukas; Studer, Bruno; Messmer, Monika.
Disease resistance is not a mere plant but a system trait involving the complex plant-associated microbial community (Berendsen et al. 2012). As with pathogens, past research often focussed on single, culturable symbiotic microbes. More recently, microbial shifts on the community level have been linked to disease resistance. However, simplistic statements such as “high microbial diversity equals healthier plants” were not confirmed in most recent microbiome analyses (Hartmann et al. 2014, Yu et al. 2012). Plants have the ability to influence the microbial structure in the rhizosphere. Besides soil type, it has been demonstrated that not only different plant species, but also different genotypes within the same species can modify the rhizosphere microbiome...

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ECOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENTS ON ORGANIC CULTIVATED SOYBEAN (Glycine max (L.) Merril.) Organic Eprints
Borbélyné Hunyadi, Éva.
In recent years different protein sources have gained importance. Crop cultivation plays an important role in meeting the demand for many of these. In order to improve the quantity and the quality of yields; we must acquire a complex ecological attitude and exercise a more rational use of natural resources. To succeed requires favourable material, technical and social circumstances. The exploitation of genetic capability – as a form of renewable resource – is a fundamental method for increasing yields. To do this we must harmonize the biological needs of the given variety, its ecological attributes, with the circumstances of its cultivation. Today, the soybean is one of the most important plant sources of protein and vegetable fats (Bódis and...

Virulence pattern in Danish races of common bunt (Tilletia caries) Common Bunt Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
By harvesting fungal spores from partly resistant varieties (as is the practise in normal organic seed production and farming), virulent races of common bunt builds up to devastating levels. The experiment shows that virulence against rare resistance genes to common bunt might be more frequent than expected, since European resistance screening so far have been done without preselecting of virulent races.

Alternative Oxidase (AOX) Senses Stress Levels to Coordinate Auxin-Induced Reprogramming From Seed Germination to Somatic Embryogenesis—A Role Relevant for Seed Vigor Prediction and Plant Robustness Organic Eprints

Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is the most striking and prominent example of plant plasticity upon severe stress. Inducing immature carrot seeds perform SE as substitute to germination by auxin treatment can be seen as switch between stress levels associated to morphophysiological plasticity. This experimental system is highly powerful to explore stress response factors that mediate the metabolic switch between cell and tissue identities. Developmental plasticity per se is an emerging trait for in vitro systems and crop improvement. It is supposed to underlie multi-stress tolerance. High plasticity can protect plants throughout life cycles against variable abiotic and biotic conditions. We provide proof of concepts for the existing hypothesis that alternative...

Various ways for successful Cultivar introduction in the market Organic Eprints
Nuijten, E.; Zeelenberg, Arend; Janmaat, Leen; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T..
Organic production requires novel, robust cultivars especially for crops such as apple, grape, tomato and potato which are very disease susceptible and are often protected by copper compounds. The European project CO-FREE aims to develop innovative methods, tools and concepts for the replacement of copper to reduce the use of copper in organic farming systems. One key strategy is the introduction of resistant cultivars. However, previous studies have shown that the introduction of novel cultivars often meets substantial obstacles as retailers’ and/or consumers’ awareness has to be generated in order to open the market. Resistance is an important issue for farmers but not immediately appealing for consumers as they are hardly aware of the fact that current...

On farm Haferflugbrand Resistenzzüchtung auf dem Dottenfelderhof von 2005 bis 2012 Organic Eprints
Schmehe, Ben; Becher, Thorben; Spieß, Hartmut.
In 2005 an organic oat (Avena sativa L.) breeding programme was initiated by the on farm breeding and research institute at Dottenfelderhof, Hessen, Germany, with the purpose of releasing oat varieties suitable for organic agriculture. From the very beginning it was one goal to develop varieties resistant to loose smut of oat (Ustilago avenae), which can be a severe problem for the certification of seeds. Therefore registered varieties as well as gene bank accessions were used for crosses and evaluated for resistance to loose smut over the years. In this paper the selection process is being described and the resistant level of the present filial generations in 2012 is shown. Additionally the results of the evaluation of registered varieties from 2010-12...
