Participatory breeding system for laying hens Organic Eprints
Leenstra, Ferry.
Livestock breeds (and breeding systems) developed for intensive production systems often do not perform as expected in organic and extensive systems. For these alternative systems animals need good social and ranging behaviour, which is in general not necessary in intensive systems with greater confinement for the animals. Although this is the case in all the livestock species (e.g. dairy cows, pigs and sheep), in poultry, the differences between organic/free range and conventional systems are comparatively large

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER REGARDING ANIMAL HEALTH Organic Eprints
Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Bielecke, Alexandra; Sundrum, Albert.
Barriers in the process of knowledge transfer in terms of animal health have been the topic of a study taking different stakeholder perspectives into account. Using instruments of communication science, the perspectives of farmers, agricultural and veterinarian advisors as well as animal scientists were brought together and discussed. The process revealed the following obstacles in the transfer of knowledge concerning animal health: diverging understanding of animal health, complexity of the processes leading to diseases, unclear responsibilities, and role conflicts. We conclude that the current communication structure is not appropriate to enable a targeting transfer of knowledge on the topic of animal health. Hence, an impulse from “outside” is required...

Evaluation of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) Used in Footbaths as Treatment and Prevention of Digital Dermatitis in Dairy Cattle Organic Eprints
Christensen, Jesper Ørsnes; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Capion, N..
The effectiveness of a footbath with a calcium carbonate (CaCO3) suspension was evaluated as treatment and prevention of digital dermatitis (DD) in four commercial dairy herds. DD is a serious problem in dairy herds in many countries including Denmark. Footbaths have been the preferred method for treating and preventing DD. Different compounds have been used in these, most og them chemical disinfectants aimed at reducing bacterial infection. However many of these compounds have no proven effect against DD. Others have effect against DD but are either harmful to humans, cows or the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate calcium carbonate (CaCO3) used in footbaths as treatment and prevention of DD. The study was done as a clinical...

Holinger, Mirjam; Ayrle, Hannah; Bochicchio, Davide; Butler, Gillian; Dippel, Sabine; Edwards, Sandra; Holmes, Diane; Illmann, Gudrun; Leeb, Christine; Maupertuis, Florence; Melišová, Michala; Prunier, Armelle; Rousing, Tine; Rudolph, Gwendolyn; Früh, Barbara.
As part of the CoreOrganic II project ProPig, researchers and advisors assessed animal health, welfare and environmental impact on 74 organic pig farms across eight European countries and in different housing systems, including outdoor, indoor and partly outdoor systems. Based on these assessments, improvement strategies were developed together with pig farmers and compiled in this handbook. The recommendations are intended to guide farmers and advisors in developing pig management, housing, and feeding towards optimal animal health and welfare.

Trait Atlas: Guidelines for standardized measurements of fertility-, health- and milk records Organic Eprints
Jaeger, Maria.
2-ORG-COWS aims for an evaluation of novel functional traits and associated environmental descriptors as a prerequisite for both the implementation of organic breeding strategies for local dual-purpose cattle kept in organic pasture based production systems, and for preventive livestock health management. In consequence, the overall objective addresses both adaptation of the dual-purpose cow to pasture based systems, and vice versa adaptation of the system for improving functional (health) traits. Due to this reasons a uniform guide for recording animal welfare (health traits, behavior, fertility), production (milk and meat quality)- and environmental descriptors (feed intake and greenhouse gas emissions) has been developed.

Animal welfare and food safety: danger, risk and the distribution of responsibility Organic Eprints
Kijlstra, Prof.Dr. Aize; Bos, Dr. Bram.
Increased animal welfare may pose risks for public health, such as increased bacterial, viral or parasitic infections or an increased level of environmental contaminants in the food product. Examples include Campylobacter in organic boilers, Toxoplasma in pigs and poultry meat and Mycobacterium paratuberculosis in milk. Concerning environmental contaminants it is known that free-foraging laying hens will produce eggs that contain higher dioxin levels than hens kept in cages. Furthermore, outdoor chickens are considered to play an important role in the case of Avian flu outbreaks. This review indicates that it is possible to tackle each of the issues mentioned. Risk management is not only a responsibility of the government, but also should be divided...

Antiparasitic activity of chicory (Cichorium intybus) and its natural bioactive compounds in livestock: a review Organic Eprints
Peña-Espinoza, Miguel; Valente, Angela H.; Thamsborg, Stig M.; Simonsen, Henrik T.; Boas, Ulrik; Enemark, Heidi L.; López-Muñoz, Rodrigo; Williams, Andrew R..
Increasing drug resistance in gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of livestock and concerns about chemical residues in animal products and the environment are driving the development of alternative control strategies that are less reliant on the use of synthetic drugs. An increasingly investigated approach is the use of bioactive forages with antiparasitic properties as part of the animal’s diet (nutraceuticals) or as potential sources of novel, natural parasiticides. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a multi-purpose crop and one of the most promising bioactive forages in temperate regions, and numerous in vivo trials have explored its potential against parasitic nematodes in livestock. However, it is unclear whether chicory can induce a direct and broad activity...

Bellof, Gerhard; Brandl, Matthias; Schmidt, Eggert.

Spengler Neff, Anet; Schneider, Claudia; Spranger, Jörg.
Over the past 40 years, dairy cow breeding has led to very high yielding cows (more than doubled average annual milk yields in most dairying countries), but also to a deterioration in cow health, fertility and longevity (Pryce et al. (1999)). Consequently, many breeding organizations all over the world are seeking to include functional traits in their breeding programmes (Groen et al. (1997), Christensen et al. (1998)). A great amount of research is done on potential index traits for indirect selection for health traits (Groen et al. (1997)). The whole constitution of the animals is to some extent considered in Scandinavian breeding programmes using the epidemiological data of all herd book animals (Philipsson et al. (2000)) and in breeding for life time...
