Seasonal concentrations of some heavy metals in muscle tissues of Siganus rivulatus and Sargus sargus fish from El-mex bay and eastern harbour, Alexandria, Egypt OceanDocs
Khaled, A..
The concentration of seven heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were detected seasonally in muscle tissues of two fish species (Siganus rivulatus, Sargus sargus) collected from El-Mex Bay and Eastern Harbour. In both species, levels of the seven metals were significantly higher in summer compared with other seasons. The concentrations of such metals decreased in the order Fe > Zn > Cu > Ni ≥ Pb > Mn > Cd. The metal pollution index (MPI) for the two species fluctuated between 0.9 and 1.8 in El-Mex and Eastern Harbour. Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) demonstrates that the concentration of the metals (Cd, Cu and Pb) in the muscle of Siganus rivulatus and Sargus sargus from El-Mex Bay and Eastern Harbour are much lower than...

Distribución y abundancia de huevos y larvas de langostino patagónico (Pleoticus muelleri) (Penaeoidea, Solenoceridae) en las temporadas estivales de 2008 y 2009 OceanDocs
Moriondo Danovaro, P..
The study on distribution and abundance of eggs and early planktonic stages of red shrimp, Pleoticus muelleri (Bate, 1888), contributes to a better knowledge of the species dynamics. Results from processing and analyzing 72 plankton samples collected with Bongo net during two research cruises on board of FV “Arbumasa XVIII” and RV “Capitán Oca Balda”, carried out in the Patagonian littoral in March 2008 and January 2009, are presented. In both cruises, eggs and larval stages were found all over the study area. The highest punctual densities of eggs were recorded in the area known as “La Pared” (46° 45’ S-65° 55’ W and 46° 50’ S-65° 55’ W). Eggs indicate the presence of shrimp reproductive concentrations which, while migrating eastwards towards waters of...

Análisis de la utilización de la captura por unidad de esfuerzo de pescadilla de red (Cynoscion guatucupa) como índice de abundancia anual. Período 1992-2004 OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Ruarte, C.O..
The stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) caught in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (SW Atlantic) has a wide latitudinal distribution (22° S-43° S). In Argentina there are two main fishing areas, the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone and 'El Rincón', southern zone of the Buenos Aires littoral. The importance of the species makes it necessary to define an annual abundance index that would allow to diagnose the state of the stock. The model adjusted to calculate the index is the General Linear Model. The factors used were Year, Quarter, Length, Stratum (4 categories) and sub-areas (5 categories), all statistically significant. The problem generated by the presence in the model of first order interactions that include the Year factor is discussed. The...

El rol del frente de mareas de Península Valdés en el control de la comunidad zooplanctónica OceanDocs
Derisio, C..
The Península Valdés tidal front was studied in its rol in the control of the spatial distribution, abundance, assemblages, diversity and life histories of the zooplankton community using samples from two oceanographic surveys. Although the front showed in general high zooplankton abundances, highest values, mainly due to the presence of immature stages of copepods, were recorded in the transitional and stratified zones coinciding with highest values of chlorophyll a. The zooplankton groups showed a distinctive spatial distribution across the front. The results showed that this front did not exert any control on zooplankton composition and diversity, but did on the abundance. In the homogeneous zone the harpacticoid copepods were more abundant, followed by...

Efecto del alga invasora Undaria pinnatifida sobre la comunidad de peces de arrecife en los golfos Norpatagónicos OceanDocs
Irigoyen, A.J..
This study investigates the impact of Undaria pinnatifida on the reef fish assemblage associated with the coastal rocky reefs of Golfo Nuevo in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Undaria pinnatifida is a laminarian kelp, indigenous to the temperate regions of Japan, China and Korea. It has spread around the world by international shipping and has also been introduced in some regions for mariculture. Its expansion into the northern Patagonian gulfs and Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, may threaten eco-tourism activities that depend on local biodiversity and the esthetic quality of the ecosystem. In particular, there is concern about the impact of Undaria on a variety of recreational activities including diving, angling and spear fishing, which...

The Marine Environment in Angola: Threats and Methods of Management OceanDocs
Sardinha, M.d.L..
The Angolan sea is an important centre of marine biodiversity and biomass of zooplankton, fish, sea birds and marine mammals, and supports also an important reserve of oil and gas. Fishing resources are important sources of proteins and employment as well as a significant source of income of foreign currency. Angola has become in recent years a major producer and exporter of oil in Africa. The utilization of the resources can be negatively influenced if management options are not appropriately implemented. The knowledge of the ecosystem, the dynamic of the resources and the factors that have a negative impact on the environment is important to manage the ecosystem on a sustainable way.

Rodrigues, K.A.; Macchi, G.J..
Spawning and reproductive variables of the northern hake stock were analyzed using macroscopic and histologic gonad information derived from samples collected in May 2009. The study includes estimates of batch fecundity, spawning frequency, oocyte dry weight and size at first maturity. During May 2009 the reproductive activity of the northern hake stock took place mainly near the 50 m isobath, north of 37° S. Spawning occurred within a temperature range of 9 °C-15 °C that coincided with a bottom thermal front. Size at first maturity, much lower than that reported at the beginning of the 1980s, showed differences between males (27.16 cm TL) and females (32.84 cm TL). The reproductive frequency was estimated at one spawning every 13 days and mean batch...
