The genus llithucia Stal, 1869, considered up to now as a junior synonym of Antonae Stal, 1867, is revalidated. Otherwise, the genera Centrugonia Stal, 1869, Electrophina Buckton, 1905, Penichrophorus Richter, 1943, and Achantomedes Fon-seca & Diringshofen, 1974, are brought into llithucia Stal as new synonyms, except Electrophina already considered so. Some other nomenclatural changes are introduced, such as revalidated names, new combinations, restored combinations, and new synonymies: llithucia Stal, 1867 nom. rev. = Centrugonia Stal, 1869 syn. n. = Penichrophorus Richter, 1943 syn. n. = Achantomedes Fonseca & Diringshofen, 1974 syn. n.; llithucia brevicornis (Richter, 1941) comb, n.; llithucia centrotoides (Walker, 1858) comb. n. =... |

ABSTRACT The first record of Phyllanthus chacoensis for the Brazilian Amazon is presented, based on a specimen from Rondônia state. The species can be recognized by its cauliflorous inflorescence, staminate and pistillate flowers with 4 sepals, devoid of a floral disk, 4 stamens, 2-carpellary ovary, drupaceous, ellipsoidal fruits, with one seed per locule. The species was previously known only from the central-western and northeastern regions of the Caatinga and Pantanal domains in Brazil. We provide a list of synonyms, a detailed description, an updated geographic distribution map in Brazil, data on habitat and conservation status, illustrations of its reproductive characters, and detailed photographs. We also propose a lectotype for the species. |

The fern genus Elaphoglossum has received a great deal of attention in Brazil over the last two centuries. Nevertheless, many of the early names remain inadequately typified. In this paper, the nomenclature of some Brazilian species of Elaphoglossum sect. Polytrichia is discussed under the rules and recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. Lectotypes are designated for the following names: Acrostichum amplissimum Fée; A. apodum Kaulf. var. sprucei Baker; A. glaziovii Fée; A. lindbergii Mett. ex Kuhn; A. prestonii Baker; Elaphoglossum spannagelii Rosenst.; and Elaphoglossum ulei H. Christ. Most of these types were collected in Brazil during the 19th century and are now preserved in several European herbaria. |

ABSTRACT During taxonomic review of the Brazilian species of the Passiflora subgenus Astrophea and P. subg Decaloba, six names published by the Brazilian botanist João Barbosa Rodrigues were found in need of discussion: Passiflora alliacea, P. amalocarpa, P. cabedelensis, P. hexagonocarpa, P. hydrophila and Tacsonia coccinea. The original illustrations are here designated as lectotypes for P. alliacea, P. amalocarpa, P. cabedelensis (a synonym of P. amalocarpa), P. hexagonocarpa, P. hydrophila (a synonym of P. costata) and Tacsonia coccinea (a synonym of P. spinosa). |

The nomenclature and taxonomy of the 25 species of Passifloraceae named by Vellozo in Flora Fluminensis were reviewed by examining the plates and Latin diagnoses. Passiflora mediterranea, P. ovalis, P. porophylla, P. silvestris, P. tetraden, and P. villosa are species proposed by Vellozo that are accepted herein. Fifteen species (P. arvensis, P. bilobata, P. dentata, P. diaden, P. globosa, P. lunata, P. maliformis, P. oliviformis, P. pallida, P. pertusa, P. polyaden, P. quadrangularis, P. rubra, P. sururuca, and P. violacea) are synonyms, were misidentified, or have illegitimate names.Passiflora edulis, P. foetida, and P. racemosa were correctly identified; however, the plant recognized by Vellozo as P. foetida is now considered P. foetida var.... |

ABSTRACT The subgenus Astrophea is one of the most critical and neglected subgenera of the genus Passiflora. Seven Brazilian species of P. subg. Astrophea were found to be in need of typification. Lectotypes are designated for the following names: Passiflora cauliflora, P. leptopoda, P. ceratocarpa, P. faroana, P. rhamnifolia, P. sclerophylla and P. tessmannii. An epitype was also designated for the name P. tessmannii. In addition, Passiflora alliacea was synonymized with Passiflora pentagona. |

The papilionoid genus Stylosanthes Sw. includes about 50 spp. distributed world wide in the tropics, approximately half of them grow in South America. The present study focuses on South American Stylosanthes. Based on examinations of herbarium specimens, as well as field observations, a total of 25 taxa (23 spp. and 2 varieties) are here described and identified with a key. Most of the species have been found to be more widely distributed than expected from the previous taxonomic literature, and the genus appears to be mainly concentrated in Brazil and Paraguay. Stylosanthes leiocarpa Vogel is new to the flora of Argentina and the presence of S. nervosa J. F. Macbr. is confirmed in Argentina. The nomenclature of S. guianensis (Aubl.) Sw. is analyzed.... |

We present relevant data about the taxonomy and distribution of 20 species of the genus Carex in the Neotropics from the Caribbean region to Patagonia. We provide a total of 19 new records, two of them for species not previously recorded from South America, ten species newly reported from different countries, and seven species here reported as new regional records in Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. We lectotypify nine species names (C. brehmeri, C. catharinensis, C. ecuadorica, C. firmicaulis, C. fuscula, C. mandoniana, C. phleoides, C. polysticha, and C. subantarctica) and epitypify one of these names (C. fuscula). Finally, we propose Carex koyamae as a new synonym of Carex phleoides. |
