Whole body amino acid composition of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and turbot (Psetta maxima) with an estimation of their IAA requirement profiles ArchiMer
Kaushik, Sadasivam.
The amino acid compositions of whole body tissue of European seabass, gilthead seabream and turbot of two different size classes were determined. No significant differences were detected between species and the composition was not affected by body size. Based on whole body indispensable amino acids (IAA) to total IAA ratios (A/E ratios), the IAA requirement profiles for the three species were estimated and compared to data available to date for some amino acids, obtained using dose-response curves.

Hepatic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase gene expression is not repressed by dietary carbohydrates in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer
Panserat, Stéphane; Plagnes Juan, E; Breque, Jeanine; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is a rate-limiting enzyme in hepatic gluconeogenesis and therefore plays a central role in glucose homeostasis. The aim of this study was to analyse the nutritional regulation of PEPCK gene expression in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which are known to use dietary carbohydrates poorly. A full-length hepatic PEPCK cDNA (2637 base pairs with one open reading frame putatively encoding a 635-residue protein) was cloned and found to be highly homologous to mammalian PEPCKs. The presence of a putative peptide signal specific to a mitochondrial-type PEPCK in the deduced amino acid sequence suggests that this PEPCK gene codes for a mitochondrial form, In gluconeogenic tissues such as liver, kidney and intestine,...

Sauriau, P; Baud, Jean-pierre.
Based on Coulter Counter data, a new method is proposed to study the influence of the polymorphous variability in size as well as in shape of the diatom species Skeletonema costatum on the physiological performances of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum . Three conditions are required in order to convert volumetric data determined with the Coulter Counter into metric data, i.e. (1) stability of the pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, (2) statistical independence between length and pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, and (3) negligible level of coincident passages through the aperture orifice. Under these three conditions, the mean length (l) of a S. costatum chain can be related to the mean pervalvar diameter (d) of diatom chains and to the...

Energy-protein management by some warmwater finfishes. ArchiMer
Luguet, P; Moreau, Y.
If warmwater finfish protein requirements as level in diet is low, absolute intake per day is similar to those of coldwater species. But relation of this requirement with specific growth rate differs for strictly warmwater fishes as Tilapias. Analysis of partition between protein and non-protein energy retention shows that these species with Clarias make a better use of non-protein energy provided and consequently improve their protein retention. Better carbohydrate digestibility and metabolism are propounded as part of the explanation.

Colloque sur l'aquaculture - 22 - 24 octobre 1973 - Brest ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien; Reyss, Daniel.

Bador, Régis; Boisson, Gilles; Delafosse, Jean-charles; Le Moullac, Gilles; AQUACOP.

Lipid nutrition and settlement behaviour in American lobster Homarus americanus ArchiMer
Theriault, I; Pernet, Fabrice.
This study examines the effects of varying dietary lipids on growth, survival, lipid composition and behaviour in lobster Homarus americanus (Milne Edwards, 1837) postlarvae. Lobsters were fed one of 3 diets during their early ontogeny: (1) Artemac, a widely used Artemia replacement; (2) a ternary mixture consisting of Artemac, frozen Artemia adults and Artemia flakes; or (3) a mixture of live A. salina nauplii and adults. We evaluated the olfactory capacity (response to predator odour plume) and cryptic behaviour (ability to hide during settlement) of lobster postlarvae as a function of these diets and the lipid and the fatty acid composition of lobsters. Growth and survival of lobster postlarvae were highest in those fed live Artemia, followed by the...

Reproductive performance, biochemical composition and fatty acid profile of wild-caught and 2nd generation domesticated Farfantepenaeus duorarum (Burkenroad, 1939) broodstock ArchiMer
Emerenciano, Mauricio; Cuzon, Gerard; Mascaro, Maite; Arevalo, Miguel; Norena-barroso, Elsa; Jeronimo, Gilberto; Racotta, Ilie; Gaxiola, Gabriela.
A 30-day trial was performed to evaluate the reproductive performance of wild and 2nd generation domesticated Farfantepenaeus duorarum broodstock. Changes in biochemical composition and fatty acids (FA) profile in the 1st and 4th spawn order females were used as indicators of nutritional condition. Wild population of F. duorarum presented significantly better reproductive outcomes as compared to domesticated ones. Wild spawners achieved significantly higher number of eggs per spawn, number of egg per spawn per g of spawner's body weight and number of nauplii per spawn (P<0.05). Latency period was significantly shorter (P<0.05) for wild than for domesticated females (11 vs 17 days). Wild spawners also presented less mortality (6 vs 12%), higher number...

The effects of fish hydrolysate (CPSP) level on Octopus maya (Voss and Solis) diet: Digestive enzyme activity, blood metabolites, and energy balance ArchiMer
Aguila, J; Cuzon, Gerard; Pascual, C; Domingues, P; Gaxiola, G; Sanchez, A; Maldonado, T; Rosas, C.
As has been demonstrated in previous studies, Octopus maya can be fed on artificial diets. In the present study six different diets were assayed. Five diets were designed to test the effect of percentage of inclusion of fish protein concentrate (CPSP: 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%) and were offered to octopuses as a specifically designed artificial diet. The sixth diet consisted of frozen crab (Callinectes spp) and was used as control diet. Blood metabolites and energy budget of octopuses were evaluated to determine how CPSP levels modulate the digestive capacity and allow retaining energy for growth. Wild animals (316.4 +/- 9.8 g) were used in the study. Results showed that CPSP produced a positive specific growth rate (SGR, % day(-1)) with high value in...

Delaporte, Maryse.
In the context of Pacific oyster C. gigas summer mortality, the present study demonstrated that the reproductive effort reduced not only the energetic parameters (carbohydrates and CEA) but also the immune parameters (concentration, phagocytosis and adhesive capacity of hemocytes). Increasing food supply from 4% to 12% (of oyster dry weight) did not counteract this phenomena as most of the additional energy was dedicated to the gametogenesis processes. However, after the gametogenesis, the 12% diet clearly favored energy storage restoration and hemocyte production. Hemocyte parameters were also modulated by the food quality. Indeed, hemocyte concentration tended to increase 20:5n-3 and/or 20:4n-6 were supplied by micro-algae or artificial diets. When these...

Deschaux, P; Peres, G.
The data showed that antibody response and NK cells activity of a teleostean fish Dicentrarchus labrax (Loup de mer) were maximal when animals were bred at a temperature equal to 18 degree C. A proteinoprive diet enhanced T cytotoxic response and diminished NK cell activity. A fast of 15 days had no effect on these two cellular responses.

Effect of environmental and nutritive conditionings on defense mechanisms of oyster Crassostrea gigas during an annual cycle ArchiMer
Delaporte, Maryse; Moal, Jeanne; Soudant, Philippe; Lambert, Christophe; Pouvreau, Stephane; Enriquez, Martha; Degremont, Lionel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Ropert, Michel.
In the frame of MOREST project, a common biological material, resulting of a mixture of different families produced in experimental hatchery, was reared in two different environmental fields : Normandy and Charente. Concomitantly, a pool was conditioned at the Ifremer Argenton hatchery with three different algae levels : 4%, 8% and 12% of algal dry weight per oyster dry weight. During the experiments, five immune parameters were studied in parallel with survival rate and reproductive status (stages and intensity). Site location, seasonal variations and experimental diet level clearly influenced oyster immune parameters. Haemocyte counts were higher for oysters reared in Normandy than those reared in Charente and in hatchery. Granulocyte percentage was...

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer
Watanabe, T.
Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .

Nicolas, Jean-louis; Joubert, M.
Bacteria associated with semi-continuous culture of Brachionus plicatilis , which is used as the first food of marine fish larvae, were counted on Zobell 2216 E medium and identified. The numbers of bacteria were very high in both Brachionus (about 10 super(11) bact. per ml of digestive content) and in water (from 1.6.10 super(6) to 4.7.10 super(7) bact. per ml). The cultures were studied at driving a time when mortalities occurred frequently. The introduction of a Pseudomonas) phenon at a proportion of about 50% to the dominant microflora persisted in time and was little influenced by diet. It has been the cause of the repression of the Vibrio, Aeromonas group which was found in an unusually small proportion. It induced a lack of microflora diversity and...

Anthouard, M; Paris, J.
Movement activity and localization of food were studied dynamically with the objective of establishing the capacities of behavioral adaptation of the young Dicentrarchus labrax faced with a novel situation. The role played by previous rearing conditions was demonstrated, the level of stimulation being a sensitive intervening factor (currents associated with the food). The data show the favourable effects of such treatment, and are in agreement with work carried out on higher vertebrates, which have brought to light the importance of early stimulation in behavioral ontogeny which respect to emotionality as well as capacities of adaptation in subjects reaching adulthood.

Nutrional inadequacy of Nannochloris atomus and Stichoccocucs bacillaris for the oyster Crassostre gigas (Thunberg) larvae ArchiMer
Robert, Rene.
The evaluation of Nannochloris atomliS and StichoccocllS bacillaris as nutrient sources for oyster larvae has been attempted in the present work. After a study of their grawth and size distributions, these two species were used as food for Crassostrea gigas larvae. Despite praper sizes (2.5 to 20 µm3) the larval development of Crassostrea gigas was poor. Evaluation of ingestion and digestion of both algae, by means of epifluorescence microscopy, on 2 day and 6 day old larvae showed that they were normally ingested but weakly digested. Consequently, their nutritional inadequacy for larval molluscs may be also related to their indigestibility.

Is it possible to raise, offspring of the 25th generation of Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) and 18th generation Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) in clear water to 40 g? ArchiMer
Cuzon, Gerard; Arena, Leticia; Goguenheim, Jean; Goyard, Emmanuel.
Peneid shrimp are commonly reared in clear-water aquaria or tanks for short-term studies of 4-6 weeks during controlled experiments, such as nutrition studies to estimate dietary nutrient requirements. Recently, in line with the genetic program at Centre Oceanologique du Pacifique (COP), experimental clear-water facilities were tested for the first time over a longer rearing period. Environmental conditions used to maintain animal growth in clear-water system using a well-balanced diet were defined. After 100 days, shrimp growth rates tended to decrease and only by adjusting the diet could shrimp complete their life cycle and reach maturation size of around 40 g. This paper presents information on stocking density, diet quality and husbandry linked to...
