Genetics and morphology of the genus Tritetrabdella (Hirudinea, Haemadipsidae) from the mountainous rain forests of Sabah, Borneo, reveal a new species with two new subspecies Naturalis
Kappes, H..
Blood-feeding terrestrial leeches of the family Haemadipsidae are a notorious part of the invertebrate diversity in Asian and Australian rain forests. All hitherto published records of terrestrial leeches of Borneo belong to the genus Haemadipsa. Here, a second, poorly known haemadipsid genus is reported from Mount Kinabalu and Crocker Range National Park. The individuals were barcoded and compared to sequences available in GenBank. The results show that the genus Tritetrabdella has representatives in the Indochinese and the Sundaic bioregions. All six specimens from Borneo are from a single new Tritetrabdella lineage, T. kinabaluensis spec. nov. Within the Bornean lineage, two groups differing 4-5% in the COI barcoding sequence were identified. Because 1)...

Natural enemies of the chinch bug, Blissus antillus Leonard (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae: Blissinae), pasture pest in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
CORACINI,DÉBORAH L.A.; SAMUELS,RICHARD I..
This study aimed to identify natural enemies of the chinch bug, Blissus antillus Leonard, which attacks Tanner grass (Brachiaria arrecta) and Tangola (hybrid of B. arrecta and B. angola), in poorly drained pastureland in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State. Immature stages of a parasitic mite, identified as Leptus sp. (Parasitengona: Erythraeidae), were commonly found attacking nymphs and adult chinch bugs in all sampled areas of Rio de Janeiro State. An egg parasitoid, Eumicrosoma sp. (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), was observed on only two occasions attacking eggs which had been collected on plant stems in the field. These natural enemies are possible candidates for biological control programs. Despite extensive sampling, B. antillus was not observed...

Ectoparasite occurrence associated with males and females of wild rodents Oligoryzomys flavescens (Waterhouse) and Akodon azarae (Fischer) (Rodentia: Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) in the Punta Lara wetlands, Argentina Neotropical Entomology
Lareschi,Marcela.
The objective of this research was to study infestation parameters and indexes of ectoparasites associated with each sex of the wild rodents Oligoryzomys flavescens (Waterhouse) andAkodon azarae (Fischer) in the Punta Lara wetlands, Argentina. A trend towards higher mean abundance (MA) and ectoparasite specific richness was observed in males of O. flavescens whereas those values were similar for both A. azarae sexes. The prevalence of the following ectoparasites was significantly higher on males (P < 0.05): Mysolaelaps microspinosus Fonseca (65.2%) and Hoplopleura travassosi Werneck (73.9%) on O. flavescens, and Ixodes loricatus Neumann (71.4%) on A. azarae. Only H. travassosi mean abundance was significantly higher on males (MA = 44.1). Since I....

Ecology and life history of an Amazon floodplain cichlid: the discus fish Symphysodon (Perciformes: Cichlidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Crampton,William G. R..
The discus fishes of the genus Symphysodon are popular ornamental cichlids that occur in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon Basin. These habitats are characterized by extreme seasonal fluctuations in the availability of food, shelter and dissolved oxygen, and also the densities of predators and parasites. Most aspects of discus biology are influenced by these fluctuating conditions. This paper reports an autoecological study of the western Amazonian discus S. haraldi (until recently classified as S. aequifasciatus). This species feeds predominantly on algal periphyton, fine organic detritus, plant matter, and small aquatic invertebrates. At high water it forages alone or in small groups in flooded forests. At low water it forms...

Reproduction of Pratylenchus zeae on Weeds Planta Daninha
BELLÉ,C.; KASPARY,T.E.; KUHN,P.R.; SCHMITT,J.; LIMA-MEDINA,I..
ABSTRACT Weeds can be hosts of root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus spp.), maintaining or increasing their population in the soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reaction of 25 weeds species to the nematode Pratylenchus zeae. The weed plants were individually inoculated with 1,000 individuals of P. zeae and maintained in a greenhouse for 90 days. After this period, eggs and nematodes were extracted, quantified, and the reproduction factor (RF = final population/initial population) was calculated. All tested weeds were susceptible (RF>1) to P. zeae, and the species Brachiaria decumbens, Rhynchelytrum repens, Digitaria insularis, D. horizontalis, B. brizantha were the most susceptible to this parasite.

Host-parasite interaction and impact of mite infection on mosquito population Rev. Bras. entomol.
Atwa,Atwa A.; Bilgrami,Anwar L.; Al-Saggaf,Ahmad I.M..
ABSTRACT During the present study, the host-parasite relationship between mosquitoes and parasitic mites was investigated. The 8954 individuals of male and female mosquitoes belonging to 26 genera: seven each of Aedes and Culex, six of Anopheles and one each of Toxorhynchites, Coquillettidia and Uranotaenia were collected from 200 sites. The male and female mosquitoes were collected from the State of Uttar Pradesh, located at 26.8500° N, 80.9100° E in North India by deploying Carbon dioxide-baited and gravid traps. The intensity of mite's infection, type and number of mites attached to mosquitoes, mite's preference for body parts and host sexes were the parameters used to determine host-parasite relationship. Eight species of mites: Arrenurus acuminatus,...

Epithelial sentinels or protozoan parasites?: Studies on isolated rodlet cells on the 100th anniversary of an enigma RChHN
SCHMACHTENBERG,OLIVER.
Rodlet cells are an unusual cell type found exclusively in teleost fishes. Their principal characteristics are a fibrous capsule and arrow or club-like structures pointing towards the apex of the cell, which are called rodlets. Rodlet cells were first described by Thelohan (1892) as undetermined sporozoan fish parasites, and soon after named Rhabdospora thelohani by Laguesse (1895). In 1906, a presently ongoing controversy started, with Plehn's independent characterization of rodlet cells as endogenous glandular cells, and a prompt refutation by Laguesse (1906). Both maintained their position, and during the following century both views continued to coexist with varying popularity, while additional interpretations of rodlet cell function were proposed....

Vanamea GEN. NOV. FOR Livoneca symmetricaVAN NAME,1925, (CRUSTACEA, ISOPODA, CYMOTHOIDAE) AND A REDESCRIPTION OF THE SPECIES BASED ON SPECIMENS FROM BRAZILIAN PIRANHAS Acta Amazonica
THATCHER,Vernon E..
Studies of the cymothoid isopod Livoneca symmetricaVan Name, 1925, showed that this species has characters that preclude its inclusion in LivonecaLeach, 1818, or in any other known genus. The species is redescribed on the basis of male and female specimens from the mouth cavities of Amazonian piranhas (Serrasalmus spilopleura(Kner) and S. elongatusKner) and Vanameagen. nov. is proposed for it. The new genus is defined as having: a cephalon that is not immersed in pereonite 1; mandibles that are "foot-shaped" and without incisors, pereopods that are long and unequal in size and shape; a pleon that is not immersed in the pereon; and a pleotelson that is inflated anteriorly and medially.

Supplementary taxonomic description of Demidospermus pinirampi (Monogenoidea, Dactylogyridae), with a new host record and an expansion of its distribution range Acta Amazonica
AGUIAR,Julio Cesar Cenci de; BUENO,Glauco Baptista Franco; SANTOS,Sonia Maria Cursino dos; ADRIANO,Edson Aparecido.
ABSTRACT During a survey conducted in the Lajeado Reservoir of the Tocantins River, in the state of Tocantins, Brazil, dactylogyrids were recovered from the gills of Pimelodina flavipinnis. Initial morphological analysis showed these dactylogyrids shared aspects of character with species of Demidospermus, with affinity to Demidospermus pinirampi, despite exhibiting differences with the original description by Kritsky et al. (1987) regarding the vagina, the base of the male copulatory organ and the shape and length of the bars. The analysis of the holotypes of D. pinirampi and its most morphologically close species, Demidospermus luckyi, revealed that these dactylogyrids were indeed D. pinirampi. This study therefore reports a new host and locality of...

Ecological aspects of Langsdorffia hypogaea (Balanophoraceae) parasitism in the Pantanal wetlands Acta Botanica
Lehn,Carlos Rodrigo; Salis,Suzana Maria; Mattos,Patrícia Póvoa.
Most studies on holoparasitic plants have focused on taxonomic or systematic issues. The objective of this study was to examine the ecological aspects of parasitism of Langsdorffia hypogaea (Balanophoraceae) in the Pantanal wetlands. Individuals of L. hypogaea were dug out by hand and the host trees were identified. Eighty-eight percent of host trees exhibited zoochory dispersal syndrome. Protium heptaphyllum and Cordiera sessilis represented 50% of the sampled trees. Both species are evergreen and are preferentially shade-tolerant species growing under the canopy of other trees. Fecal sample of collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu) had seeds from both the host tree (Protium sp.) and the parasite L. hypogaea. We therefore propose the hypothesis that P. tajacu...

Metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) parasite of Brochis multiradiatus and Corydoras splendens (Siluriformes: Callichthyidae) from the Peruvian Amazon Biological Sciences
Morey, Germán Augusto Murrieta.
Corydoras splendens (Castelnau, 1855) and Brochis multiradiatus (Orcés V., 1960) are highly demanded for exporters in the Peruvian Amazon and importers all over the world.  The exportation of this fish species may represent a gateway for endoparasites to enter in a new environment with serious effects, so, the present study reports the presence of Tylodelphys sp. infecting C. splendens and B. multiradiatus. Fish were acquired from fishermen of the city of Iquitos, Peru. After the necropsy and analyses of the fish, metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. were found in the liver and intestine. This finding represents the first report of Tylodelphys Diesing, 1850 infecting a fish in the Peruvian Amazon. Considering the possible damages caused by species of...
