Background: Genetic Improvement Programs (GIP) aim to enhance productionefficiency of beef cattle. The main way to guide this enhancement is by choosing thebest mates among sires and cows, in order to maximize the offspring GeneticQualification Index (QGI), which is measured by an index defined by the GIP andcomputed for each animal of the herd. This paper describes a genetic algorithm, whichcan recommend an optimal set of matings among sires and cows, in order to maximizethe QGI of the herd. Breeders can define constraints regarding level of problems, which must be avoided, and they also can alter the traits relative importance consideredin QGI, according their particular interests. This algorithm was applied to a herd of aBrazilian breeder, which... |

Abstract: The objective of this study was to compare the corn-based (FLU), high linoleic acid flushings(LAF), and a control treatment (un supplemented, CON); two genetic groups:Morada Nova (MN) and Brazilian Somalis (BS), on the productive and reproductive performance of ewes and their lambs. A total of 156 non-pregnant ewes were supplemented three weeks before and after the breeding season. Supplementation with either FLU or LAF increased ewe body condition score (BCS) at the beginning of the breeding season and at lambing compared to CON. The BS ewes had greater body weights at the supplementation end, and BCS both at the supplementation start, and at lambing compared to MN. Similarly, ewes with three lambs per birth had greater BCS at the beginning of... |

Abstract Background: Copy number variations (CNVs) are a major type of structural genomic variants that underlie genetic architecture and phenotypic variation of complex traits, not only in humans, but also in livestock animals. We identified CNVs along the chicken genome and analyzed their association with performance traits. Genome-wide CNVs were inferred from Affymetrix® high density SNP-chip data for a broiler population. CNVs were concatenated into segments and association analyses were performed with linear mixed models considering a genomic relationship matrix, for birth weight, body weight at 21, 35, 41 and 42 days, feed intake from 35 to 41 days, feed conversion ratio from 35 to 41 days and, body weight gain from 35 to 41 days of age. Results: We... |

Supplementation with the use of additives for 3 to 4-month old calves can increase their productive performance, due to alterations that occur in the gastrointestinal tract and the decrease in cow milk production during this period. Thus, the use of supplements becomes necessary to increase weight gain rates. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the productive performance of suckling Nellore calves under mineral supplementation with and without virginiamycin. |

This study aimed to evaluate levels of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) extract (YME), as a feed additive in the diets of growing lambs on serum biochemical parameters and hematological indices, animal performance, body metrics and carcass traits. Thirty-six entire (nine per treatment), male growing lambs, weighing 23.8 ± 3.7 kg, were fed the experimental diets which were treatments consisting of increasing levels of YME (0, 1, 2, and 4% inclusion on a dry matter [DM] basis) during an experimental period of 53 days. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, which initial body weight was used as blocking factor and the results were analyzed by orthogonal contrasts (linear, quadratic, and cubic). Yerba mate extract did not change the... |

[Effects of different methods of caatinga vegetation on the performance of sheep in the... |
