Organochlorine pesticides in residues in waters from the coastal area of Dar es Salaam and their effect on aquatic biota OceanDocs
Mwevura, H.; Othman, O.C.; Mhehe, G.L..
Water samples were collected from Msimbazi and Kizinga rivers in Dar es Salaam and from the coastal marine environment receiving waters from these rivers during both the wet season and the dry season and analysed for various organochlorine pesticide residues using GC-ECD. The pesticides p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDT, dieldrin and g-HCH were the only organochlorines detected at significantly greater concentrations above detection limits. There was a marked difference on the frequency of pesticide residue detection during the two seasons. All the wet season samples and 37.5% of the dry season samples contained p,p’-DDE at concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.45mg/l and 0.08 to 0.20mg/l respectively. p,p’-DDT was detected in 25% of the dry season samples at a...

Ocular tentacle malformation in Deroceras reticulatum (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Agriolimacidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Daglio,Eduardo Daniel; Lucía,Micaela de; Robinson,David Gwyn; Gregoric,Diego Eduardo Gutiérrez.
Abstract Malformations in animals have long been known. In gastropod, natural and induced malformations are mentioned in different systems and in ocular tentacles, mainly linked to cases of parasitism and exposure to pollutants (molluscicides and chemicals). In this study we present a new malformation not documented in the ocular tentacles of slug Deroceras reticulatum that could be due to the action of pesticides. This malformation in D. reticulatum is the first malformation to be mentioned for South America in nursery gardens.

Modifications on Labels and Leaflets of Herbicides for Preventing and Managing Resistance Planta Daninha
CARVALHO,S.J.P.; ROSSI,C.V.S.; MELO,M.S.C.; CHRISTOFFOLETI,P.J.; KAGI,F.Y..
ABSTRACT: The challenge of managing herbicide-resistant weeds is an agricultural reality in Brazil that shall not be neglected. In this sense, Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento (MAPA) published Act No. 45 on July 14, 2017, provides the inclusion of a code system on labels and leaflets of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides, in order to demonstrate the mode of action of the active ingredient present in the product. In case of mix formulations, both molecules must be discriminated, adopting the same “Herbicide Resistance Action Committee - HRAC” international reference code. The Act No. 45 facilitates the process to choose and adopt products by all those involved in the chain production. It also collaborates with the possible to...

Controlled Release of TBH Herbicide Encapsulated on Ca-ALG Microparticles: Leaching and Phytointoxication Plants Planta Daninha
MACEDO,D.F.; DOURADO JR.,S.M.; NUNES,E.S.; MARQUES,R.P.; MORETO,J.A..
ABSTRACT: The aim of this work was to demonstrate a detailed study of the controlled release of the herbicide Tebuthiuron (TBH) encapsulated in microparticles of calcium alginate (Ca-ALG), to evaluate the phytotoxicity in different concentrations of herbicide (4, 6 and 8 g L-1), and their correlation with the depth of leaching using bioindicator plants. The Ca-ALG microparticles were prepared from the crosslinking of sodium alginate by Ca++ containing varied amounts of TBH supplied in calcium chloride (CaCl2) aqueous solution. The results showed that TBH herbicide, when encapsulated, leached to shallow depths relative to the conventional, non-encapsulated herbicide (which moved to a depth of 40-50 cm). The concentration of 4 g L-1 was the one that leached...

Computer programs for analysis of droplets sprayed on water sensitive papers Planta Daninha
Cunha,J.P.A.R.; Farnese,A.C.; Olivet,J.J..
The use of water-sensitive papers is an important tool for assessing the quality of pesticide application on crops, but manual analysis is laborious and time-consuming. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate and compare the results obtained from four software programs for spray droplet analysis in different scanned images of water-sensitive papers. After spraying, papers with four droplet deposition patterns (varying droplet spectra and densities) were analyzed manually and by means of the following computer programs: CIR, e-Sprinkle, DepositScan and Conta-Gotas. The diameter of the volume and number medians and the number of droplets per target area were studied. There is a strong correlation between the values measured using the different programs and the...

Comparing Parts with the Whole: Willingness to Pay for Pesticide-Free, Non-GM, and Organic Potatoes and Sweet Corn AgEcon
Bernard, John C.; Bernard, Daria J..
Auction experiments were used to investigate demand relationships and willingness to pay (WTP) for four versions of potatoes and sweet corn—conventional, organic, and two parts of organic: no pesticides and non-genetically modified (non-GM). Elasticities showed strong and asymmetric substitute relationships between organic and its parts. Combined premiums of the parts were not significantly different than the whole organic premium, suggesting WTP for the attributes are not additive. A two-stage heteroskedastic tobit model found significant WTP for each part dependent on demographics and beliefs about conventional versions. Results suggest segments for parts of organic could be established alongside the whole.

Why farmers continue to use pesticides despite environmental health and sustainability costs AgEcon
Wilson, Clevo; Tisdell, Clement A..
Use of chemical inputs such as pesticides have increased agricultural production and productivity. However, negative externalities, too, have increased. The externalities include damage to the environment, agricultural land, fisheries, fauna and flora. Another major externality has been the unintentional destruction of beneficial predators of insects which has led to a virulence of many species of agricultural pests. Mortality and morbidity among agricultural workers, especially in developing countries from exposure to pesticides, are also common. The costs from these externalities are large and affect farmers’ returns. However, despite these high costs, farmers continue to use pesticides and in increasing quantities. In this paper, we examine this...
