The abundance, biomass and composition of pelagic ciliates in East African lakes of different salinity and trophy OceanDocs
Yasindi, A. W.; Taylor, W. D..
Planktonic ciliates were studied in 17 tropical East African lakes of different salinity and trophic status. Oligotrichs (e.g., Strombidium, Strobilidium and Halteria) and scuticociliates (e.g., Cyclidium, Pleuronema, Cristigera), dominated the ciliate communities. Conductivity and trophic status were the most important environmental variables influencing the distribution of ciliate species in East African lakes. Herbivorous oligotrichs were important in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes, as they are in temperate and subtropical lakes, but their importance decreased with increasing chlorophyll a concentration and conductivity. On the other hand, the importance of scuticociliates (primarily bacterivores) increased with increasing chlorophyll a and...

Variabilidad del plancton en estaciones fijas frente a la costa ecuatoriana OceanDocs
Coello, D.; Prado, M.; Cajas, J.; Cajas, L. de.
Planktonic information obtained in four fixed stations in front of Esmeraldas coast, Punta Galera, Puerto López and salinas is analyzed, during 1999-2000 and 2003-2006 periods. Temporal variability of phytoplankton and zooplankton densities between 2004 and 2006 were mainly determined by the oceanographic characteristics, and by the interrelations between the components of plankton and seasonal distribution of the organisms, as well. Higher phytoplankton productivity was determined in front of Esmeraldas, whereas the higher concentrations of zooplankton were obsrved in Puerto López, this evidences the predation at the first by the second trophic level. the phytoplankton composition in Esmeraldasis mainly influenced by the Esmeraldas river whereas in Port...

Plankton size distributions and trophic relations before and after the construction of the storm-surge barrier in the Oosterschelde estuary OMA
Tackx, M.L.M.; Herman, P.M.J.; Van Rijswijk, P.; Vink, M.; Bakker, C..
Phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass distributions were calculated on a carbon basis for the inland part of the Oosterschelde, in the period before (1983), during (1984, 1986) and after (1987, 1988) the construction of the storm-surge barrier. In all years studied, both phytoplankton and zooplankton distributions are very irregular, and little consistent patterns emerge. The data were used to test the model of Sheldon et al. (1977). The observed standing stock ratios of zooplankton to phytoplankton agree with the model predictions in 1983, and are slightly higher during the period 1984-1987. In 1988, the model predictions are very different from the observed values, because of important changes in the zooplankton species abundance occurring in this year.

Planktic Cyanobacteria from São Paulo State, Brazil: Chroococcales Rev. Bras. Bot.
Sant'Anna,Célia L.; Azevedo,Maria Teresa de P.; Senna,Pedro Américo C.; Komárek,Jirí; Komárková,Jaroslava.
The biodiversity studies of planktic cyanobacteria started in 1997 with intensive collecting in different water bodies of São Paulo State. Due to the problems brougth by eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms, the samplings were concentrated in reservoirs of Alto Tietê region that supply drinking water to millions of people. The samples were collected with 20 µm plankton net or Van Dorn's bottle. Part of each one was preserved in formaldehyde or lugol solution and part was isolated. The culture strains were kept in BG11 and/or AMS1 media. Based on natural and culture material, 26 species were identified belonging to the families Chroococcaceae (2 taxa), Merismopediaceae (12), Microcystaceae (7) and Synechococcaceae (5). Among these species, six are...

A molecular method to detect and identify the native species of southwestern Atlantic Crassostrea (Mollusca: Ostreidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ludwig,Sandra; Patella,Raquel; Stoiev,Sérgio; Castilho-Westphal,Gisela; Girotto,Marcus V. F; Ostrensky,Antonio.
Among oysters, species of Crassostrea (Sacco, 1897) are the most attractive to aquaculture. In Brazil, the genus is represented by C. rhizophorae (Guilding, 1828) and C. brasiliana (Lamarck, 1819). Because the maturation and breeding technology is not well developed for these species, aquaculturists need a reliable method to decide the correct time to place spat collectors in the field, and to identify both species, which are morphologically similar. In this study a specific Multiplex PCR protocol was developed, using one pair of universal primers from 18S rDNA as a positive control and a pair of specific primers for each target species. The sensitivity and specificity of the protocol was evaluated. It detected C. rhizophorae DNA in low concentrations, and...

Reproductive timing and larval dispersal of intertidal crabs: the predator avoidance hypothesis RChHN
CHRISTY,JOHN H..
Many intertidal and shallow water crabs have strong reproductive cycles and migratory larvae. Females release larvae near the time of high water of the larger amplitude nocturnal tides during the semilunar or lunar cycles. Newly hatched larvae move quickly at night toward and into the sea where, weeks later, they develop to megalopae that then ride nocturnal flood tides inshore and up estuaries to settle in adult habitats. It was first thought that crabs might time larval release so that larvae will become megalopae when they can ride the larger amplitude spring flood tides to adult habitats. This idea was rejected when it was found that were was no change in the timing of hatching during the breeding season by several estuarine species that would...

Finding patterns of distribution for freshwater phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish, by means of parsimony analysis of endemicity RChHN
OYANEDEL,J. PABLO; VEGA-RETTER,CAREN; SCOTT,SERGIO; HINOJOSA,LUIS FELIPE; RAMOS-JILIBERTO,RODRIGO.
During the last decades, limnological studies on Chilean systems have contributed to know the species composition and main environmental variables of many water bodies distributed over a wide latitudinal interval, from 18º to 53º S. However, we still lack of a comprehensive view about the structure and functioning of regional freshwaters. In this work we review the available information about pelagic biota from Chilean basins, in order to reveal patterns of species distribution and their possible association with environmental variables. We built presence-absence matrices for phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish over lakes and basins. From this database, we performed parsimony analysis of endemicity as a tool for determining fundamental distribution...

Chemical composition of phytoplankton from the estuaries of Eastern Amazonia Acta Amazonica
Vilhena,Maria do Perpetuo Socorro Progene; Costa,Marcondes Lima da; Berrêdo,José Francisco; Paiva,Rosildo Santos; Almeida,Pryscila Denise.
Phytoplankton is important bioindicator of chemical and biological modifications of natural ecosystems. The objective of this study was to determine the total chemical composition of the phytoplankton of the Pará and Mocajuba estuaries on the eastern coast of the Amazon region in the Brazilian state of Pará. The chemical composition of the surface water, bottom sediments (total sample and bioavailable fraction), and the phytoplankton were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Phytoplankton contained high concentrations of Ca, P, Mn, Fe, Zn, Al, Ba, and Pb. The phytoplankton of the Mocajuba estuary is rich in Fe (2,967-84,750 µg g-1), while those from the Pará is rich in Al (1,216-15,389 µgg-1), probably reflecting...

The adequate diet of Nile tilapia in their growth early stages is fundamental to the success of culture subsequent stages. The goal of the present work was to evaluate the Nile tilapia growth fed with different diets, and to morphometrically characterized the gastrointestinal tract of this species. The treatments consisted of three diets: (D1) natural food, (D2), commercial feed and (D3) commercial feed + natural food. In the qualitative phytoplankton analysis, there was greater representation of the genus Chlorella, while zooplankton community analysis revealed greater number of Brachionus rotifer. Growth and survival in D2 and D3 did not reveal differences (p > 0.05), while in D1, the results were significantly lower (p < 0.05). The...

Influence of Eichhornia crassipes and Lemna sp. on the natural diet of Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000 in the initial stages Biological Sciences
Galdioli, Eliana Maria; Hayashi, Carmino; Soares, Claudemir Martins; Soares, Telma; Wolff, Liu.
Aiming to study the changes in the diet of Astyanax altiparanae in the early developmental stages, in the presence of Eichhornia crassipes (EC) and Lemna sp. (LM), larvae of Astyanax altiparanae were stocked in eight tanks of 900 L (500 ind. tank-1), four with EC and four with LM covering 50% surface. Tanks were inoculated with plankton and received 3.0 g inorganic fertilizer (NPK-7:14:8) and 1.5 g every week. At every three days, three larvae were taken from each tank, fixed in 4% formaldehyde and grouped into four age classes (I: 6 to 12 days, II:15 to 21 days, III:24 to 30 days; IV:33 to 39 days). The analysis of dominance and frequency of occurrence (FO) of food items indicated that, at this stage, A. altiparanae is generalist. In class I, there was a...

An annotated checklist of the Arcella (Arcellidae) from littoral zone of Paranoá lake-Brazil, with a pictorial key Biological Sciences
Silva, Mariana Lessa Carneiro da; Rangel, Elisangela Reis; Lansac-Tôha, Fabio Amodêo; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto; Joko, Ciro Yoshio.
The pictorial key contributes to taxonomic analysis, as it lists the species found in a given environment, and points out the morphological characteristics that differs one specific taxon from the others. Arcellidae Ehrenberg, 1830 is one of the testate amoebae families with highest representativity in terms of richness and abundance, including three genera, that Arcella shows greater dispersion in different types of aquatic biotopes. The zooplankton community in the Paranoá Lake has been extensively studied over the decades. However, there are no studies on testate amoebae in this environment. The study aimed to develop a pictorial key to help in the identification of Arcella in the Paranoá Lake. Samples were taken with plankton net at 13 sites in the...

Copepod distribution and production in a Mid-Atlantic Ridge archipelago Anais da ABC (AABC)
MELO,PEDRO A.M.C.; MELO JÚNIOR,MAURO DE; MACÊDO,SILVIO J. DE; ARAUJO,MOACYR; NEUMANN-LEITÃO,SIGRID.
The Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago (SPSPA) are located close to the Equator in the Atlantic Ocean. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial variations in the copepod community abundance, and the biomass and production patterns of the three most abundant calanoid species in the SPSPA. Plankton samples were collected with a 300 µm mesh size net along four transects (north, east, south and west of the SPSPA), with four stations plotted in each transect. All transects exhibited a tendency toward a decrease in copepod density with increasing distance from the SPSPA, statistically proved in the North. Density varied from 3.33 to 182.18 ind.m−3, and differences were also found between the first perimeter (first circular distance band) and the...

Protozooplankton is an important component of the aquatic microbial food webs and its composition, density, and distribution reflect the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the environment. Considering the scarce literature on freshwater protozoans in Brazil and on protozoan ecology in subtropical environments, we listed the ciliates and amoebae taxa found in 13 water bodies in São Paulo State and analyzed their abundance in relation to the environmental variables. We collected two samples in each environment, fixed immediately with mercuric chloride and stained with bromophenol blue. After microscopical analysis, 74 protozoan genera were identified and the Ciliophora were dominant in the majority of the environments. The Stichotrichia,...

Effect of coastline properties and wastewater on plankton composition and distribution in a stressed environment on the north coast of Olinda-PE (Brazil) BABT
Pereira,Luci Cajueiro Carneiro; Jiménez,José Antonio; Koening,Maria Luise; Porto Neto,Fernando F.; Medeiros,Carmen; Costa,Rauquírio Marinho da.
A study of the structure of the plankton community along the coastal zone of the Casa Caiada-Rio Doce area (Pernambuco, Brazil) is presented. The results obtained indicated that in the protected zones the water presented high turbidity, high temperature, low salinity and high nutrient and oxygen rates. All of these conditions were responsible for the reduction in plankton diversity and an increase in the biomass of the most opportunistic (r-strategist) species e.g. Gyrosigma balticum and Bacillaria paxillifera (Phytoplankton) and Euterpina acutifrons (Zooplankton). The differences found with respect to others area studies performed in pristine conditions indicated that plankton structure could be used as an environmental health indicator and that, in this...
