Caleman Neto,Agostinho; Rasmussen,Lucas T; Labio,Roger W de; Queiroz,Valdeir F de; Smith,Marília de AC; Viani,Gustavo A; Payão,Spencer LM.
Background : Epidemiological investigations have indicated thatHelicobacter pyloriinduces inflammation in the gastric mucosa regulated by several interleukins. The genesIL1BandIL8are suggested as key factors in determining the risk of gastritis. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the association of gene polymorphism of interleukin-1 and interleukin-8 with chronic gastrits inH. pyloriinfected patients. A total of 60 patients underwent endoscopic procedure. Biopsy samples were collected for urease test, histopathological and molecular exams. The DNA of theses samples was extracted for detection ofH. pyloriand analysis of the genes mentioned above. Patients with gastritis had a higher frequency ofH. pylori-positive samples. Results : H. pyloriwas detected...

Alelle number and heterozigosity for microsatellite loci in different stingless bee species (Hymenoptera: Apidae, Meliponini) Neotropical Entomology
Francisco,Flávio de O.; Brito,Rute M.; Arias,Maria C..
In the present study we compare genetic characteristics (allele diversity and observed heterozygosity) of microsatellite loci, from three stingless bee species (Plebeia remota Holmberg, Partamona mulata Moure In Camargo and Partamona helleri Friese), amplified by using heterospecific primers originally designed for Melipona bicolor Lepeletier and Scaptotrigona postica Latreille. We analyzed 360 individuals of P. remota from 72 nests, 58 individuals of P. mulata from 58 nests, and 47 individuals of P. helleri from 47 nests. The three species studied showed low level of polymorphism for the loci amplified with primers derived from M. bicolor. However, for the loci amplified with primers derived from S. postica, only P. remota presented low level of...

Detection of mitochondrial DNA restriction site differences between the subspecies of Melipona quadrifasciata Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) Neotropical Entomology
Moretto,Geraldo; Arias,Maria C..
The endemic range of the stingless bee Melipona quadrifasciata Lepeletier extends from the southern most state in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, up to the state of Paraíba, where it originally inhabited the Atlantic Rain Forest. Two subspecies have been morphologically recognized based on the tergal band pattern (yellow stripes across the abdomen), M. q. quadrifasciata and M. q. anthidioides. The objective of the present study was to characterize restriction site variation in the mitochondrial DNA of each subspecies. Four colonies of each subspecies were sampled. One individual per colony was used for DNA extraction and further analysis through amplification of nine fragments of the mitochondrial genome and digestion with 13 restriction enzymes (PCR+RFLP)....

Genetic variability of native populations of Wasmannia Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and their biogeographical implications Neotropical Entomology
Souza,Ana L B; Tavares,Mara G; Serrão,José E; Delabie,Jacques H C.
Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger) and Wasmannia rochai Forel are economically important ants in the Southeast and Southwest regions of Bahia State, Brazil. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to distinguish and analyze the genetic variability of populations of both species from Ilhéus, Jequié, BA and French Guyana. The genetic distances among W. auropunctata and W.rochai populations (55.8-71.4%) suggest genetic differentiation among them. Wasmannia auropunctata populations from sugarcane and banana plantations in Jequié were the most distant genetically (30.1-46.3%) and may represent populations restricted to isolated fragments. The high genetic distances among W. auropunctata populations from CEPLAC experimental areas, in Ilhéus...

Chromosomal variability in the wild ornamental species of Symphysodon (Perciformes: Cichlidae) from Amazon Neotropical Ichthyology
Mesquita,Débora R.; Porto,Jorge I. R.; Feldberg,Eliana.
Cytogenetic studies were conducted on three discus species which inhabit the Amazon in Brazil: Symphysodon haraldi from Manacapuru, S. aequifasciatus from Tefé and S. discus from Barcelos. All individuals showed 2n=60 chromosomes, most of them biarmed. No sexual chromosomal heteromorphism was verified. However, different karyotypic formulae, owing to the presence of subtelocentric chromosomes, were verified for S. aequifasciatus and S. discus. One of the karyotypic formulae from S. aequifasciatus (cytotype 2) differs from the others, due to one of the homologues in the first chromosome pair being significantly larger than the other. A large variability was observed toward the nucleolar organizer regions (NOR) of S. haraldi and S. aequifasciatus. Although...

KAWASAKI, Yurie; AOKI, Yuka; MAGATA, Fumie; MIYAMOTO, Akio; KAWASHIMA, Chiho; HOJO, Takuo; OKUDA, Kiyoshi; SHIRASUNA, Koumei; SHIMIZU, Takashi; 宮本, 明夫; 清水, 隆.
The present study aimed to assess the effect of polymorphisms in the tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) promoter (A/A, A/G and G/G) and exons (T/T, T/C and C/C) on immune function and reproductive performance in dairy cows. The occurrence of the first postpartum ovulation within 3 weeks in the cows with the TNF-α promoter A/G and G/G genotypes was higher than in the A/A group. Among the different TNF-α exon genotypes, the occurrence of early first postpartum ovulation was higher in the T/C and C/C genotype groups than in the T/T group. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TNF-α gene did not affect the rate of artificial insemination (AI) or duration from parturition to next conception (days open). The apoptosis rate of polymorphonuclear leukocytes...

Relationships Between the First Ovulation Postpartum and Polymorphism in Genes Relating to Function of Immunity, Metabolism and Reproduction in High-producing Dairy Cows OAK
The decrease in fertility and conception rates of high-producing dairy cows is one of the major negative impacts for today's producers. The recovery of ovarian activity postpartum is affected by the status of immunity, metabolism and reproduction and plays a critical role in subsequent fertility after parturition in the cow. In the present study we investigated the relationships between polymorphisms in genes relating to the above functions and the first postpartum ovulation as a marker of the recovery of ovarian function in the cow. In immune function related-factors, the occurrence of first postpartum ovulation within 3 weeks in the C/C genotypes of tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) exon (55.4%) and the A/G genotypes of TNFα promoter (55.4%) was...

The advertisement call, color patterns and distribution of Ischnocnema izecksohni (Caramaschi and Kisteumacher, 1989) (Anura, Brachycephalidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Taucce,Pedro P. G.; Leite,Felipe S. F.; Santos,Patrícia S.; Feio,Renato N.; Garcia,Paulo C. A..
Ischnocnema izecksohni inhabits the gallery forests from the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Southern Espinhaço range, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, and it is considered endemic to this region. Its closest related species is I. nasuta according to the original description. We describe the advertisement call of I. izecksohni based on specimens recorded and collected at the municipality of Nova Lima, state of Minas Gerais, distant about 10 km straight line from its type locality. The advertisement call consists of a group of notes emitted sporadically without a regular interval between the calls. Call duration (n = 36 calls in four individuals) ranged from 1.03 to 1.85 s (= 1.52 ± 0.21 s) and the call rise time from 0.66 to 1.52 s (= 1.16 ± 0.25 s),...

Extreme homogeneity among Brazilian wheat genotypes determined by RAPD markers PAB
FREITAS,LORETA BRANDÃO DE; JERUSALINSKY,LEANDRO; BONATTO,SANDRO LUIS; SALZANO,FRANCISCO MAURO.
Random amplified polymorphic DNA markers (RAPD) were used to estimate the variability of 14 genotypes of Brazilian wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), using a set of 50 random 10mer primers. A total of 256 reproducibly scorable DNA amplification products were obtained from 48 of the primers, 83% of which were polymorphic. Genetic distances among genotypes were calculated and a dendrogram and a principal coordinates analysis showing the genetic relationships among them were obtained. Despite the low variability found (average genetic distance of 27%), two groups of genotypes could be identified, which probably reflect how they were formed. Studies such as this one may be important in the planning and development of future improvement programs for this plant...

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes IGF1 (AF_017143.1:g.198C>T), MSTN (AF_320998.1:g.433C>A), MYOD1 (NC_007313:g.1274A>G) and MYF5 (NC_007303:g.1911A>G) on carcass and meat traits in Nelore (Bos indicus) and Nelore x B. taurus. A total of 300 animals were genotyped and phenotyped for rib eye area (REA), backfat thickness (BT), intramuscular fat (IF), shear force (SF) and myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI). The effects of allele substitution for each SNP were estimated by regression of the evaluated phenotypes on the number of copies of a particular allele using the general linear model. The polymorphism at IGF1 was non-informative in Nelore animals. In crossbred...
