The abundance, distribution and structure of the zooplankton community in southern Patagonia (SW Atlantic Ocean) were studied during late summer (March-April 2000) from samples obtained with Nackthai (390 ~km) and Multinet (150 ~km) samplers. Total concentrations of zooplankton biomass, integrated in the water column, ranged between 1.0 and 14.5 g m-2 (dry weight) and reached the highest values in the mid and outer shelf off Bahía Grande (Santa Cruz Prov., Argentina) (51~'S). The < 5 mm size fraction, composed mainly of copepods represented, on average, 45% of the total; amphipods and euphausiids accounted for 20% and 31%, respectively. Amphipods were, almost exclusively, Themisto gaudichaudii and euphausiids most abundant species Euphausia lucens and... |

In August 1996 acoustic methods were employed to estimate mackerel (Scomber japonicus) abundance in the Buenos Aires, Argentina shelf area of "El Rincón" (4,287 mn2), located between 39°- 40° 30' S. Results showed a biomass estimate of 77,260 t. ASIMRAD EK-500 equipment operated with a 38 KHz split-beam transducer was used. Midwater fishing trawls were employed to identify echotraces and to collect mackerel samples.Trawls 4 and 5 were the most successful. Samples included only adult fish (310-470 mm Lt and ages ranging 2-11). Length and weight growth parameters and mortality rates were estimated. Analysis of the stomach contents revealed that mackerel was feeding exclusively on zooplankters over 2 mmlength. The analysis of the characteristics (dimensions... |

The age-class distribution of the Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis in relation to environmental variables in spring and winter, and the growth of both sexes, were studied in the SW Atlantic Coastal System (SACS)(34°S-31° S). Growth was studied from 1449 individuals (n=853, spring (1998 + 2000), n=596, winter (2004)) to which size (TL), sex, and age were determined. Age was determined considering that an opaque plus a hyaline band (present in the transverse section of the sagitta otolith) represented 1 year of life. The age-class distribution in spring and winter was established through hierarchical clustering and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (nMDS analysis). This analysis grouped sampling stations (n=109, spring 1998; n=160, winter 2004)... |

The distribution, abundance and population structure of Illex argentinus in relation to the oceanographic conditions during summer 1997, were analyzed as a result of the research cruise carried out by R/V Shinko Maru No.3 on the Argentine shelf (39-50°30'S). Besides, abundance and biological features of Ommastrephes bartrami are analyzed. The main activities carried out during the cruise included jigging operations, tagging (only for I. argentinus) and biological sampling. In addition, meteorological and oceanographic data were collected. A total of 30,2000 individuals were tagged and released. The recapture rate was 0.156. (47 recoveries/30,200 released), considerably higher than that of 1996 (0.030; 4 recoveries/13,191 released). I. argentinus was... |
