Considerações sobre índices de produtividade da pecuária de corte em Mato Grosso do Sul. Infoteca-e
ZIMMER, A. H.; EUCLIDES, V. P. B.; EUCLIDES FILHO, K.; MACEDO, M. C. M..
Do...

Étude dynamique de la population de Nucula nucleus (bivalve, protobranche) du cap de Flamanville (Manche) ArchiMer
Chardy, Pierre; Guillaumont, Brigitte; Hamon, Dominique.
Annual production and turnover rate of biomass are estimated on a population of the bivalve, Nucula nucleus, dominant on the sublittoral area of Cap de Flamanville (Manche). Investigations on reproductive cycle established on the gonads maturity index over one year indicate a single spawning period in autumn. Age is determined from a study of the ring pattern on the shells, in which annual signification is outlined. The Von Bertalanffy curve and the exponential function give an adequate description of growth and mortality. The studied population is considered as near a theoretical population with constant recruitment and mortality; this simplification is discussed through the comparison of the demographie structures obtained in the same station in 1978 and...

Diatom response to oceanographic and climatic changes in the Congo fan area, equatorial Atlantic Ocean, during the last 190ka BP ArchiMer
Hatin, T.; Crosta, X.; Le Herisse, A.; Droz, L.; Marsset, Tania.
Changes in siliceous productivity in the eastern Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, off the Western African margin, over the last several glacial cycles have been either related to global-to-regional oceanographic changes (upwelling intensity) or climate changes (precipitation and river discharge). Based on diatom assemblages in core KZAI-02, located to the south of the mouth of the Congo River, integrated with a selection of geochemical proxies, we show that siliceous productivity in the southeastern Angola Basin responded to non-linear interactions between both oceanographic and climate changes over the last 190,000 years. High diatom accumulation rates were recorded in the middle part of MIS 6, in cold substage MIS 5d and in MIS 3-2. During these intervals,...

Alternatives to taxonomic-based approaches to assess changes in transitional water communities ArchiMer
Mouillot, D; Spatharis, S; Reizopoulou, S; Laugier, Thierry; Sabetta, L; Basset, A; Chi, T.
1. Transitional waters, described as critical transition zones because of their position at terrestrial, freshwater and marine interfaces, provide essential goods and services to the biosphere including human populations. These ecotones face increasing human influence mainly due to population density increase in coastal areas. 2. Transitional water bodies have, to date, received little attention in the development of ecological status indicators, this is a critical deficiency when trying to meet the Water Framework Directive objective of all significant water bodies achieving good ecological status by the year 2015. 3. In order to assess changes in transitional water communities many taxonomic-based indicators have already been proposed but there are a...

Siliceous productivity changes in Gulf of Ancud sediments (42 degrees S, 72 degrees W), southern Chile, over the last similar to 150 years ArchiMer
Rebolledo, Lorena; Gonzalez, Humberto E.; Munoz, Praxedes; Iriarte, Jose L.; Lange, Carina B.; Pantoja, Silvio; Salamanca, Marco.
We evaluated changes in siliceous export production and the source of organic matter preserved in sediment core MD07-3109H recovered from the Gulf of Ancud, Chiloe Inner Sea (42 degrees S, 72 degrees W, water column depth: 328 m), southern Chile. We analyzed the abundance of siliceous microfossils (diatoms, silicoflagellates, sponge spicules, Chrysophyte cysts, phytoliths), geochemical proxies (weight percent silicon %Si(OPAL), organic carbon, total nitrogen. C/N molar), and sediment stable isotopes (delta(13)C(org), delta(15)N). Chronology based on (210)Pb and (14)C provided an accumulated age of 144 years at the base of the core. Sediments of core MD07-3109H are predominantly marine in origin, averaging delta(13)C(org)=-20.75 parts per thousand+0.82,...

Better off alone? Compared performance of monoclonal and polyclonal stands of a cultivated red alga growth ArchiMer
Usandizaga, Sara; Buschmann, Alejandro H.; Camus, Carolina; Kappes, José Luis; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Mauger, Stéphane; Valero, Myriam; Guillemin, Marie Laure.
The objective of this study was to test, using a field experiment, the effect of genotypic diversity on productivity of farmed populations (Ancud and Chaica, Chile) of the domesticated red alga Agarophyton chilense (formerly known as Gracilaria chilensis), a species considered as economically important in Chile. Monoclonal and polyclonal (4 and 8 genotypes) subplots were outplanted into the mid intertidal in Metri Bay (Puerto Montt, Chile) during summer, a season in which A. chilense face higher temperatures (>18°C) and low nitrogen availability (<4.00 μmol). Ancud farm genotypes show higher growth rates in the monoclonal rather than the two polyclonal subplots. A similar tendency, yet not significant, was discernible in Chaica. In addition, whatever...

High species richness and unique composition of the tanaidacean communities associated with five areas in the Pacific polymetallic nodule fields ArchiMer
Błażewicz, Magdalena; Jóźwiak, Piotr; Menot, Lenaick; Pabis, Krzysztof.
The benthic fauna associated with polymetallic nodule fields is scarcely studied. Studies on species richness and distribution patterns are indispensable for the conservation of the abyssal ecosystem and for the development of management strategies for sustained commercial activities in the future. Here, we analysed the distribution patterns and diversity of tanaidacean communities associated with four International Seabed Authority licenced areas (BGR, IOM, GSR, Ifremer) located in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (North-East equatorial Pacific) and the one Area of Particular Environmental Interests (APEI3). The study was based on 34 box core samples collected at depths ranging from 4,200 to 5,000 m. Altogether, 98 species (446 individuals) were...

Reconstruction of late Quaternary marine and terrestrial environmental conditions of Northwest Africa and Southeast Australia. A multiple organic proxy study using marine sediments ArchiMer
Lopes Dos Santos, Raquel A.
NW Africa and SE Australia are regions which are particularly vulnerable to climate change. In this thesis, organic proxies are used from marine sediment cores to reconstruct past environmental conditions from these areas. In sediments from NW Africa, the UK'37 showed an efficient proxy for sea surface temperature (SST) reconstruction, while the TEXH86 reconstructed thermocline temperatures. The UK'37 and TEXH86 records for the last 192 ka showed that periods of reduced AMOC coincide with a reduction in the vertical temperature gradient. Thus, variations in AMOC strength is a driver of the thermocline structure in the tropical Atlantic. Three independent organic proxies (UK’37,TEXH86 and LDI) were used to reconstruct SSTs for the last 135 ka in sediments...

The Manila clam population in Arcachon Bay (SW France): Can it be kept sustainable? ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Gam, Meriame; Paroissin, Christian; Bru, Noelle; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
The venerid clam Ruditapes philippinarum is the most prominent suspension-feeding bivalve inhabiting muddy intertidal seagrass beds in Arcachon Bay (SW France). It is exploited by fishermen, and Arcachon Bay ranks number one in France in terms of production and total biomass of this species. Previous studies revealed a decrease in the standing stock of R. philippinarum since 2003 and unbalanced length-frequency distributions with a lack of juveniles and of adults >40 mm. Consequently, the population dynamics of this bivalve were studied at four intertidal sites and one oceanic site in Arcachon Bay. As clam size structure did not allow classical dynamics computations. field monitoring was coupled with field experiments (tagging-recapture) over two years....

Paleoceanography of the southern Agulhas Plateau during the last 150 ka: Inferences from benthic foraminiferal assemblages and multispecies epifaunal carbon isotopes ArchiMer
Diz, Paula; Hall, Ian R.; Zahn, Rainer; Molyneux, Elizabeth G..
Benthic foraminiferal assemblages and the carbon isotope composition of the epifaunal benthic foraminifera Epistominella exigua and Fontbotia wuellerstorfi have been investigated along core MD02-2589 located at the southern Agulhas Plateau ( 41 degrees 26.03'S, 25 degrees 15.30'E, 2660 m water depth). This study aims to evaluate changes in the benthic paleoenvironment and its influence on benthic delta(13)C with a notable focus on E. exigua, a species associated with phytodetritus deposits and poorly studied in isotope paleoceanographic reconstructions. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages (> 63 mu m) show large fluctuations in species composition suggesting significant changes in the pattern of ocean surface productivity conceivably related to...

Sea surface temperature, productivity, and terrestrial flux variations of the southeastern South China Sea over the past 800000 years (IMAGES MD972142) ArchiMer
Shiau, Liang-jian; Yu, Pai-sen; Wei, Kuo-yen; Yamamoto, Masanobu; Lee, Teh-quei; Yu, Ein-fen; Fang, Tien-hsi; Chen, Min-te.
Variations in sea surface temperature (SST), productivity, and biogenic components such as total organic carbon (TOC), carbonate, and opal contents measured from IMAGES (International Marine Global Changes Study) core MD972142 provide information about long-term paleoceanographic changes during the past similar to 870000 years in the southeastern South China Sea (SCS). MD972142 U-37(k)-SSTs varied from 25 to 29 degrees C, paralleling the glacial to interglacial changes. MD972142 biogenic components show relatively high carbonate and opal, and low TOC contents in interglacial stages, and low carbonate and opal and high TOC contents in glacial stages, and these variations appear to be sensitive to regional terrestrial sediment input and productivity. Dynamics of phytoplankton diversity structure and primary productivity in the English Channel ArchiMer
Napoleon, Camille; Fiant, Liliane; Raimbault, Virginie; Riou, Philippe; Claquin, Pascal.
The dynamics of the phytoplankton assemblage, the physical, chemical and biological parameters, and primary productivity and production were monitored in the central English Channel along a transect between Ouistreham and Portsmouth from January to December 2010. The spatial patterns of the phytoplankton assemblage were controlled by the hydrological characteristics of the water masses, and the annual structure of the phytoplankton assemblage was characteristic of the central English Channel and was controlled by seasonality. The spring bloom was dominated by a single species, Chaetoceros socialis, and associated with low microphytoplankton evenness and Shannon-Wiener indices, whereas the evenness index was high from late spring to winter and associated...

New insights into productivity and redox-controlled trace element (Ag, Cd, Re, and Mo) accumulation in a 55 kyr long sediment record from Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California ArchiMer
Chang, Alice S.; Pichevin, Laetitia; Pedersen, Thomas F.; Gray, Victoria; Ganeshram, Raja.
A high-resolution, 55 kyr long record of chalcophile and redox-sensitive trace element accumulation (Ag, Cd, Re, and Mo) from MD02-2515, western Guaymas Basin, is investigated in conjunction with patterns in stratigraphy and productivity. High opal concentrations (~59 wt. %), representing increased diatom production, coincide with laminated sediments and dilute the concentrations of organic carbon (Corg) and metals. A similarity between opal and normalized Corg, Ag, and Cd concentrations suggests delivery to the sediments by diatom export production, while patterns in normalized Re and Mo accumulation suggest a different emplacement mechanism. Although Mo enrichment in organic-rich, laminated sediments typically represents anoxic conditions at other...

Hydrographic conditions along the western Iberian margin during marine isotope stage 2 ArchiMer
Voelker, A. H. L.; De Abreu, L.; Schoenfeld, J.; Erlenkeuser, H.; Abrantes, F..
The surface water hydrography along the western Iberian margin, as part of the North Atlantic's eastern boundary upwelling system, consists of a complex, seasonally variable system of equatorward and poleward surface and subsurface currents and seasonal upwelling. Not much information exists to ascertain if the modern current and productivity patterns subsisted under glacial climate conditions, such as during marine isotope stage (MIS) 2, and how North Atlantic meltwater events, especially Heinrich events, affected them. To help answer these questions we are combining stable isotope records of surface to subsurface dwelling planktonic foraminifer species with sea surface temperature and export productivity data for four cores distributed along the western...

Rapid longitudinal migrations of the filament front off Namibia (SE Atlantic) during the past 70kyr ArchiMer
Romero, O. E.; Crosta, X.; Kim, J. -h.; Pichevin, L.; Crespin, J..
Although productivity variations in coastal upwelling areas are mostly attributed to changes in wind strength, productivity dynamics in the Benguela Upwelling System (BUS) is less straightforward due to its complex atmospheric and hydrographic settings. In view of these settings, past productivity variations in the BUS can be better investigated with downcore sediments representing different productivity regimes. In this study, two sediment cores retrieved at ca. 25°–26°S in the BUS and representing different productivity regimes were studied. By using micropaleontological, geochemical and temperature proxies measured on core MD96-2098, recovered at 2910 m water depth in the bathypelagic zone at 26°S off Namibia, variations of filament front location,...

CHANGES IN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF A TYPIC HAPLOCAMBID BY ANNUAL CROP CULTURE J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Seguel,O; Baginsky,C; Contreras,A; Covarrubias,J; Gonzalez,C; Sandoval,M.
As an alternative to organic soil amendments used in the Copiapo Valley (northern Chile), this study analyzed the magnitude of changes in physical soil properties associated with different crop rotations on the rows on a grape orchard. The study was performed in the locality of Los Loros, Atacama Region, during the 2006-2008 seasons. In a Typic Haplocambid soil (2-5% slope, coarse loam) with a 6-year old grape plantation, a control and three crop rotations were established, each with four replicates. Soil samples were taken at three depths (0-10; 10-40; 40-60 cm), evaluating bulk density, penetration resistance, aggregate stability, pore size distribution and air and water flux. Crop rotation did not produce statistical differences in soil density compared...
