Measuring the Relative Profitability of Mid-South Cotton Production from an Alternative Gin Seed Rebate Model AgEcon
Fannin, James Matthew; Paxton, Kenneth W..
The purpose of this paper is to assess the opportunity returns forgone to cotton producers in the lower Mid-South region of the United States for growing cotton, compared to alternative commodities. We calculate the actual net returns per acre for selected cotton-producing counties in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. In addition, we calculate the opportunity returns per acre if the acres planted in cotton were planted in the highest net return commodity per acre between corn and soybeans during the period 1997 through 2008. Our results find that producers in these cotton producing-counties faced sizeable opportunity revenues foregone averaging 43% between 2003 and 2008. Most observers of the cotton industry would argue that these foregone revenues are...

Bulgarian rural development policy implementation and new rural paradigm AgEcon
Peneva, Mariya Marinova; Kopeva, Diana Ilieva.
The role of Rural Development Policy is growing nowadays. As an EU member state Bulgaria started implementation of Rural Development Policy. The paper analyse the level of achievement of the Rural Development Programme’s objectives in Bulgaria. The programme started in 2008 and most of the measures are implemented. But effective payments have been done only under eight measures. The vast majority of financed projects are for investments mainly in agriculture (for perennial crops production, buildings, machineries and equipment). In the paper are specified opportunities and challenges of the rural development policy in Bulgaria in order to be consistent with the new rural paradigm.

Linking Small Scale Farmers in China with the International Markets: A Case of Apple Export Chains AgEcon
Zhang, Xiaoyong; Qiu, Huanguang; Huang, Zhurong.
This study describes how governance mechanisms were formed that link small-scale apple farmers in China with export markets. These institutional innovations have improved the efficiency of price transmission and generated higher profit margins for various actors in the supply chain, in particular for small-scale farmers. Chinese apple exports are highly coordinated through ongoing long term loyal network relationships and vertical integration. Relevant policy implications and further challenges are discussed in the conclusion.

Spatial Marketing Patterns for Corn Under the Condition of Increasing Ethanol Production in the U.S. AgEcon
Conley, Dennis M.; George, Adam.
Events external to agriculture have set in motion the conditions for structural change in the marketing of corn in the U.S. These included a rapid increase in the price of crude oil from $40 per barrel to over $100 caused by hurricanes, geopolitical events, an increased global demand for energy from countries like China and India, and in December 2007, the U.S. raising the renewable fuel standards. The results of this research show that there could be significant changes in the historical utilization and marketing of corn in the U.S. The change in movement patterns provides one source of visible evidence that a structural change is underway.

Crop Production Functions for Analysis of Global Change Impacts in Spain AgEcon
Gomez, Sonia Quiroga; Iglesias, Ana.
The goal of this paper is to increase the capacity of the agriculture sector to understand and respond to the climate variability, by reducing the uncertainty of the farmers over decisions that are affected for meteorological conditions. To study the yield responses to meteorological variables in the past is crucial to understand the vulnerability of the agriculture to the climate change in the future. We have estimated regression models where the historical yields have been put in dependence of variables that can represent main drivers of global change, such as climate variables and technological ones. In this context we evaluate its influence over the yields. Among the conclusions we find that the adaptation to climate change requires challenges in which...

DIRECT PAYMENTS AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE LAND MARKET IN POLAND AgEcon
Dziemianowicz, Ryta Iwona; Przygodzka, Renata; Sadowski, Adam.
The article makes an attempt to answer the question: how direct payments affected the land market in Poland? The first part of the article explains the theoretical aspects of direct payments as an instrument of agricultural policy and their prospective effectiveness. Also the special character of the solutions adopted by Poland in relation with the use of this instrument was shown. The second part presents the main problems of the land market in Poland, taking into account both the supply and the demand factors of this market. The third part concentrates on searching for the cause-effect relations between the direct subsidies and the changes in the land market in Poland. They suggest, among others, that the forecasts regarding the retaining of land in...

Impacts of labour on interactions between economics and animal welfare in extensive sheep farms AgEcon
Vosough Ahmadi, Bouda; Dwyer, Cathy M.; Erhard, H.W.; Morgan-Davies, Claire; Waterhouse, A.; Milne, Catherine E.; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata; Ringrose, Sian; Goddard, Pete; Phillips, Kate; Stott, Alistair W..
This study quantified interactions between animal welfare and farm profitability in British extensive sheep farming systems. Qualitative welfare assessment methodology was used to assess welfare from the animal's perspective in 20 commercial extensive sheep farms and to estimate labour demand for welfare, based on the assessed welfare scores using data collected from farm inventories. The estimated labour demand was then used as a coefficient in a linear program based model to establish the gross margin maximising farm management strategy for given farm situations, subject to constraints that reflected current resource limitations including labour supply. Regression analysis showed a significant relationship between the qualitative welfare assessment...

Análise da participação da agropecuária no PIB dos EUA de 1960 a 2001 AgEcon
Brugnaro, Ricardo; Bacha, Carlos Jose Caetano.
This paper analyses the evolution of agriculture’s participation in the US gross domestic product (GDP) from 1960 to 2001. An econometric model is run in order to identify the main variables that determine this participation. From 1960 to 2001, there is a downward trend of agriculture’s participation in the US GDP with a break from 1971 to 1973, in other words, agriculture’s participation in the US GDP decreased from 1960 to 1970, increased from 1971 to 1973 and decreased again from 1973 to 2001. The 1971-1973´s break in the downward trend of agriculture’s participation is econometrically proved. Dataset organized in graphs show grain and meat production steadily enlarged from 1970 to 2001, what is closely related to the productivity increase and federal...

Consumer Preferences and Trade-Offs for Locally Grown and Genetically Modified Apples: A Conjoint Analysis Approach AgEcon
Novotorova, Nadezhda K.; Mazzocco, Michael A..
Using conjoint analysis methodology, this study used an online survey to measure consumers’ preferences for the apple attributes as place of production, method of production, and price. The results of the conjoint analysis indicate that consumers are willing to make trade offs between the studied attributes. Segment analysis indicates Place-oriented consumers may be willing to pay 60% to 70% premiums for locally grown apples. The high consumer preferences for locally grown products combined with environmental benefits transferred through genetic modification provide an opportunity for producers to capture and build their markets, especially within certain market segments.

Institutional Analysis of Swidden: The Case of Swiddners in Orissa AgEcon
Jyotishi, A..
Swidden being a widespread form of land use in the tropics comprehensively defining it become a difficult task. Its characteristics embrace different types of topography, demographic feature, ethnic and ecological diversities. It also varies in terms of cropping pattern, frequency of land use, tools and methods of practice. It is argued that the institutions governing swidden are static in nature and do not adapt to the requirements of the changing ecological and social needs. This necessitates understanding what characterise institutions in a traditional swiddening society, and hence, changes in these characteristics to appreciate whether swidden is a static form of agriculture or changing over the time and space. There are a few aspects, which underscore...

The Impact of Coordination of Production and Marketing Strategies on Price Behavior: Evidence from the Idaho Potato Industry AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya; McIntosh, Christopher S.; Muthusamy, Kalamani; Patterson, Paul E..
High potato price volatility, decreasing demand for fresh potatoes and prices below the cost of production led to a decision of a number of Idaho potato growers to organize the United Fresh Potato Growers of Idaho, a marketing cooperative. The programs and strategies of the cooperative target both the production and marketing of fresh potatoes in Idaho. To evaluate the effectiveness of the programs implemented by the cooperative, we examine the level and volatility of fresh potato prices during two periods: before the cooperative was organized and when the cooperative is in the market. We find empirical evidence suggesting that fresh potato prices were higher and less volatile during the period when the cooperative was in the market.

UTILIZATION OF RELATIVE LAND ALLOCATION IN THE CALIBRATION OF AGRICULTURE SUPPLY MODELS BY THE PMP APPROACH AgEcon
Barkaoui, Ahmed.
This poster proposes a new procedure in agriculture supply modelling by the positive mathematical programming (PMP) approach. This approach is now widely used in last CAP reform simulations. However, simulation behaviour and performances of PMP procedures depend of the way parameters of the non linear total cost function in the objective function are recovered. We propose a new specification of the total cost function where land is explicitly considered as a fixed input. By using relative parts of land of the different activities this new PMP procedure permits to better capture production behaviour when economic conditions. It also permits to avoid a drawback of the early procedures concerning marginal activities

Welfare Effects of Mandatory Traceability When Firms are Heterogeneous AgEcon
Pouliot, Sebastien.
We develop a framework in which the cost of producing a quantity food and the cost of food safety differs across firms. We show that large firms may supply the safest food even though small firms have a cost advantage in producing safe food. The model shows that mandatory traceability can decrease the overall safety of food when small firms that supply the safest food exit the industry. Our model applies to food safety but can be applied to a wide range of issues related to regulation and product quality.
