This study aims to integrate the problems associated with port development and related activities in an economic monitoring programme that surveys all the activities associated with the marine environment. The economic monitoring programme in this sector also includes studying coastal spatial planning. This type of study concerns the creation and remodelling of sites that involve investments. We can consider two types of coastal spatial planning: one which integrates port development, tourism, aquaculture and fisheries and one that deals with the marine environment (Abric, 1989). Economic surveys of port development on French coasts supposes that the problem of identifying information sources have been resolved and the sectors and the activities that... |

Fishing is an economic activity that, in a general way, requires the implementation of regulatory measures to avoid crises. This problem is linked to certain peculiarities inherent to fishing: the renewable and common character of the exploited resource, and the great variability of catches. Since the entire means of production coming into play in fishing is designated by the term fishing effort, various regulatory policies will become attached to the idea of fitting the level of the fishing effort to that of the exploited resource. After introducing the evolution of the fishing sector in an early section, we will study the main lines of EU policy in the sphere of fishing in section II. Section III will be devoted to the Multi-Year Orientation Programme... |

Many theoretical studies since after the war have been devoted to the biological and economic aspects of exploiting halieutic resources. They often lead to, indeed focus directly on, the interest of limiting the fishing effort. In the simplest case, the one in which production automatically finds an outlet, the idea of limiting the fishing effort comes from an argument that can be presented schematically in three points: a) halieutic resources and their renewal are limited; b) an increase in overall fishing effort cannot therefore be done while maintaining the same level of catches per unit of effort; the latter inevitably decrease. Additionally, beyond a certain level of fishing intensity, a supplementary increase of the overall fishing effort brings... |

In the context of an economic crisis with the recession in 1993 and a fall-off in demand, the combination, in the beginning of 1993 and 1994, of the following eventsled to a drop in prices which triggered off a social faintness in the French fishing industry, e.g. the adjustment of exchange rates, the reduction in air-freight tariffs, etc... The problem is not so much about the significance of the short term drop inprices - which is usual at this time of the year- but about the long term trends whichthis sector has been subject to for decades. Beyond the resource's biological constraints, the 1975 difficulties of French fisheries have revealed their vulnerability and dependence on the market of competitive agricultural products, the international market... |

This econometric study is an integral part of a series of research works that IFREMER is undertaking on use planning of scallop fishing in St Brieuc Bay. It aims to provide a quantification of changes in the value of new and used boats in use in St Brieuc Bay. This study will make it possible to: (i) explain the importance of the capital invested in scallop fisheries; that will be used for analysis of the growth of this fishery from 1965 to 1985; (ii) evaluate the pace of depreciation of the capital; this latter will be integrated into a bio-economical model that analyzes various strategies of long-term exploitation of the scallop stock (see "A bio-economic model for the scallop in St Brieuc Bay", by J.M. GATES, document DRV/SDA 86.06). |

The term "extensive mariculture" covers two main types of production : the exclusive territorial right based aquaculture of fixed species and stock enhancement based fisheries. The releasing of juveniles, with or without the supply of adequate habitat, is presently the main form of stock enhancement. Japanese experience shows the difficulty to clearly assess the benefits of marine ranching, and then to ensure its management. Some of the main aspects of this management are presented here : public and private costs-benefits analysis, the relation fishing/aquaculture/sea-ranching and the role of collective organization for management. |

In the Portuguese national economy, the role of the fishing industry is very important, although its contribution to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is only about 1%. This sector employs 41,724 fishermen and more than 50,000 people for all activities associated with fishing. The volume of exports ensures a relatively large in-flow of foreign currency. It must be emphasized that the fishing sector is the main supplier of raw materials for the conversion industries. Fish products supply up to 40% of the animal proteins meant for human consumption. Portugal is the leading consumer of seafood in Europe: 35 kg per inhabitant per year. Up until 1971 and for the period of 1978-1980, the trade balance of seafood was positive with an annual average of 168 MF from... |

This document follows on from the study of the French industry of St-Jacques and pectinides ("Coquille St-Jacques et pectinidés en France") conducted between January and November 1992, as a common initiative of the Ifremer and the Fiom, and analysing the situation of the industry. Considering the recent evolutions in this industry (growth in national production, trading difficulties, etc.), it seemed necessary to update the results and take into account these evolutions. This study divides into three: The first paragraph updates and completes the analysis of the national production through a new campaign analysis. The second part deals with pectinides consumption in France. And the last paragraph studies external trade and its recent evolutions.... |

This document is meant to contribute technical and economic factors that make it possible to give an assessment of the experiments in salmon farming conducted on St Pierrre and Miquelon and to envisage strategies for the future. Before participating in a potential transfer of this activity to the professionals, IFREMER's Department of Living Resources requested the RA and SDA departments to conduct a study on salmon farming potential in the archipelago with regard to ecological, technical and economic constraints. By reason of the short time period, a certain number of points were not delved into; they could be the subjects of more in-depth studies by specialist organisations. The appendices to this document evaluate the history of the program (appendix... |

The role of epiphytes in an intertidal Zostera noltii seagrass bed in Marennes-Oleron Bay was assessed in comparison with the other main benthic primary producers (Z. noltii, microphytobenthos) at two bathymetric levels and on a seasonal basis. Assemblage and biomass of epiphytes were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Z noltii and its detrital matter followed a typical seasonal pattern: microphytobenthos was present in large quantities throughout the year representing 21% of the total biomass while detrital matter, above-ground parts and below-ground parts accounted for 65, 9 and 5%, respectively. Only two species of epiphytic diatoms, Cocconeis scutellum and Cocconeis placentula, were observed on seagrass leaves. Epiphyte biomass was very... |
