The NW Madagascar continental margin receives high loads of terrigenous particulate organic matter during the wet season and especially linked to extreme events, originating from two major rivers, the Betsiboka and the Mahavavy Rivers. This particulate matter contains a high content of iron minerals from the weathering of red ferruginous/ferralitic soils of Madagascar. The presence of pockmarks, i.e. gas or fluid expulsion features on the continental slope, testifies to past/present methane migration through the sedimentary column, associated with early diagenetic processes. This study globally aims at deciphering the interactions between episodic sedimentation and geochemical processes influenced by fluids upward migration, using a sediment trap mooring... |

This study contributes to inventory programme on emerging pollutants in French waters and to the general reflection which will enable to update the list of relevant substnaces to be included in the new monitoring programmes to come. This work concerns the coastal part of the inventory programme on marine waters and sediments of France and five overseas french departments (OFD). In this goal, passive sampling techniques and direct extraction techniques have been tested through the implementation of in situ systems integrators POCIS (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler) and the extraction by SBSE bars (Stir bar sorptive extraction) directly in the waters sampled. Finally, analyzes of sediment completed the acquisition of data. Arount 40 stations were... |

The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin de Thau is reproduced with a two-dimensional numerical model of horizontal ciruclation using an Alternate Direction Implicit scheme. A stochastic analysis of frequencies on a yearly time scale of the velocity fields computed in the model and a spatial and stochastic treatment of the term (H2 y2), similar to an effective coefficient of horizontal dispersion by shear effect are presented. This approach will allow the delineation, in a stochastic manner, of the main structures of the circulation in the lagoon and the spatial heterogeneity of its ecohydrodynamic features. Two attempts of analogical research are presented, with sorne examples of the spatial structure in the phytoplankton biomass and the map of the... |

Sediments quality assessment is of priority concern to provide a comprehensible overview of ecological and chemical state of an ecosystem. The Marennes-Oleron Bay, hosting the largest oyster production in France, is influenced by the historic polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary. Despite, management efforts and decreasing emissions in the Gironde watershed, Cd levels in oysters from the bay are close to consumption limit (5 pig g(-1) dw. EC no. 466/2001). In this context, the aim of the study was to assess the priority metal (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb and Th) concentrations in sediment within the Bay, by investigating spatial and temporal distribution variations and the role of hydrodynamic forcing. For that we selected three sites (east,... |

A study was conducted in seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and oyster (Crassostrea gigas) ponds to assess the levels of heterogeneity of sediments and settling particles. The intensity of sampling to estimate with high accuracy some characteristics will depend on the magnitude of the variation within the population under consideration. Several variables, such as total phosphate (Tot-P), total iron (Tot-Fe), total ammonium nitrogen (TAN), organic carbon (Org-C), total nitrogen (Tot-N) and P fractions were analysed during the rearing period. The box-and-whisker plots were used as graphical/statistical tools to visualize the descriptive statistical characteristics of the data. In the fish pond, the sediments have high concentrations of Tot-P, Tot-Fe and TAN in... |

In this study, we undertook a reconnaissance study of sediments provenance in the Gulf of Lions focusing over the last 16 ka. We used geochemical and isotopic tracers to determine the source of sediments and give insight into the weathering conditions prevailing. Sediments samples were selected both onshore and offshore from the western, eastern, and central part of the Gulf of Lions. We analyzed bulk sediments, coarse and fine silt, and clay fractions. Elemental and Nd isotope compositions appeared to differ from one grain size fraction to another one. These are interpreted in terms of zircon addition in the coarse silt fraction for the elemental concentrations and variable sources influences for the Nd isotope compositions. Our results indicate that... |

The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. Furthermore, for the first time, metal concentrations found in P. oceanica have been compared with those found in the water column, in the sediment and in the... |

The presence of highly pathogenic Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in shellfish, upstream waters and sediment from coastal shellfish sites was evaluated using the ISO/TS-13136 method. Shellfish (oysters, mussels and cockles), water and sediment samples were collected monthly over a period of 1 year. The method used real-time PCR detection of stx1, stx2 and eae genes and genetic markers corresponding to the five major serogroups (O157, O26, O103, O111 and O145) on enrichment broths and the identification of STEC when these genes and markers were detected. stx genes were detected in the broth of 33% of shellfish batches (n = 126), 91% of water samples (n = 117) and 28% of sediment (n = 39). One stx1+, eae+ O26:H11 strain was isolated from a... |

The evolution of nitrogen content in experimental closed circuit ¿and filters was followed, each tank being fed with different quantities of soluble organic matter. According to the trophic conditions, two types of metabolism could be observed : - a loss of nitrogen (denitrification), reaching almost 90% of the nitrogen input in eutrophic conditions, and close to 35% in mesotrophic conditions. - a gain in nitrogen (fixation), a predominant metabolism in oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. Nitrogen retention in the sediment increases slightly with the organic matter input, but no proportionality could be established. It seems that the sediment, by its bacterial metabolisms, regulates its own organic matter richness. |

The phenomenon of summer mortalities of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas is observed in France since the beginning of the 90's. These mortalities are classically associated to younger stages and summer temperatures and occur during the reproduction period of the animal. The studies undertaken during the project Morest (2001-2005), showed that a number of biological and environmental risks, the interaction of them induces lethal stresses for animals in physiological weakness, exists in summer. Among these risks, that which is withstood by the oysters bred close to the sediment proved to be significant in intertidal areas. In Quiberon bay (southern Brittany, France), the breeding practices of sowing oysters in deep water is thus likely to expose... |

Background Toxic cyanobacterial blooms are recurrent in Patos Lagoon, in southern Brazil. Among cyanotoxins, [D-Leu1] microcystin-LR is the predominant variant whose natural cycle involves water and sediment compartments. This study aimed to identify and isolate from sediment a bacterial strain capable of growing on [D-Leu1] microcystin-LR. Sediment and water samples were collected at two distinct aquatic spots: close to the Oceanographic Museum (P1), in Rio Grande City, and on São Lourenço Beach (P2), in São Lourenço do Sul City, southern Brazil. Methods [D-Leu1] microcystin-LR was isolated and purified from batch cultures of Microcystis aeruginosastrain RST9501. Samples of water and sediment from Rio Grande and São Lourenço do Sul were collected.... |

The technology available for the control of sediments, nutrients, and adsorbed biocides in surface irrigation return flows has been reviewed and evaluated. Some of this technology could be applied immediately to reduce sediment and associated nutrient and biocide concentrations in surface irrigation return flows. Much of the available information needs to be integrated to develop improved control practices. New ideas and new control technology are needed. Economic incentive programs are needed to improve acceptance of control technology. The factors controlling erosion and subsequent sediment concentrations in surface irrigation return flows, and how these factors can be managed to reduce erosion and sediment concentrations are reviewed and... |
