Endangered breeds are not compulsory for organic farming, but adapted and local breeds are considered suitable for Organic Farming. In the year 2001, 240 ewes of six different breeds were introduced on the experimental farm of the Institute of Organic Farming in Trenthorst. Two were high yielding breeds, four older endangered German breeds. The whole herd was kept in one herd in a low input – low output system, comparable to agrienvironmental schemes. The scientific programme was to follow the herd’s development in terms of health status, growth rate and product qualities. After three lambing seasons, no real advantages could be found for the old breeds. Nevertheless, high yielding and old breeds did not show big differences in production and health... |

Three different methods of composting (no reverse, 2xreverse, 5xrevers) were conducted in summer and winter over a period of 62 days with respect to the survival of endoparasites. Highest temperatures were reached in compost hills without reversing. Reversing lowered the temperature. Maximum temperatures were almost 70°C but in winter highest temperatures nearly reached 55°C. After two weeks of composting in winter temperatures were always under 40°C. In summer no parasitic larvae could be detected at the end of the trial independent of reverse frequency. In winter larvae could be counted at the end of the trial. |

The ram effect, which is a natural method for the control of reproduction in sheep, is an alternative to hormone treatments that are banned on organic farms. The ram effect induces a combination of ovulation and oestrus in ewes that is acyclic and conducive to artificial insemination. The proportion of acyclic females with induced ovulation and their subsequent fertility at the first oestrus is variable. The control of some breeding factors that have been studied here may help to reduce this variability. The proportion of ewes induced to ovulate by rams increased as the season advanced (54% in April vs. 84% at the end of May, p<0.05) and with a longer time period between drying-off and mating: from 29% to 84% (p<0.001) for 22 and 86 days elapsed,... |

The general objective of the project was to evaluate alternative methods of control of nematode parasitism in small ruminants. More specifically, the project aimed at 1 developing novel methods of diagnosis in order to use more efficiently the available chemical anthelmintics. Novel methods have been developed either on animals or through analysis of the pasture grazing system 2 assessing the interest in organic farming of mixed grazing between cattle and sheep for the control of helminth parasitism of the gastrointestinal tract. The materials and methods used are: - In vivo parasitological and pathophysiological measurements on two flocks: one of cattle plus sheep in mixed grazing conditions and one of sheep alone. -... |

The antioxidant effects of dried citrus pulp on proteins in lamb meat, when used as a replacement of concentrate in the feed, was studied using meat from 26 male Comisana lambs. The lambs of age 90 days had been grouped randomly to receive one of the three dietary treatments: (1) commercial concentrate with 60% barley (Control, n = 8), (2) concentrate with 35% barley and 24% citrus pulp (Cp24, n = 9), or (3) concentrate with 23% barley and 35% citrus pulp (Cp35, n = 9). Slices from the longissimus thoracis et lomborum muscle were packed aerobically and stored for up to 6 days at 4°C in the dark. The citrus pulp groups, Cp24 and Cp35, significantly decreased protein radicals and carbonyls, and preserved more thiols within six days of storage compared to the... |

Dairy goats, naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, were fed 700g sainfoin- or alfalfa-pellets per day, additionally to a non-tanniferous basic diet. The effect of the feeding on the parasite egg excretion per gramm faeces (EPG) was monitored over a period of 7 weeks. The trial was conducted in parallel at two sites; in France and in Switzerland. At both sites the same quality of sainfoin- and alfalfapellets were used. Compared to the alfalfa group the EPG of the sainfoin fed goats were reduced by 12% in France andby 18% in Switzerland. A repeated measurement analysis revealed no significant difference between the feeding groups at neither site. As it is very likely that the effect of condensed tannins on gastrointestinal nematodes is dose... |

It is DEFRA policy is to support sustainable farming methods (including organic farming) that benefit the environment and that provide a competitive and safe food supply chain which meets consumer requirements. The development of organic farming in the hills and uplands has been under-pinned by government support during the period of conversion from conventional to organic status (e.g. the Organic Farming Scheme). For many extensively managed hill and upland organic units the move to organic production systems has not required a substantial change in farm management policy or major loss of physical output during the early years following conversion. Despite this, organic price premiums per unit output (e.g. higher price/kg for beef and lamb) have not in... |

This study investigated the effect of replacing cereal concentrateswith high levels of dried citrus pulp in the diet on lamb meat oxidative stability. Over 56 days, lambs were fed a barley-based concentrate (Control) or concentrates inwhich 24% and 35% dried citrus pulpwere included to partially replace barley (Citrus 24% and Citrus 35%, respectively). Meat was aged under vacuum for 4 days and subsequently stored aerobically at 4 °C. The Control diet increased the redness, yellowness and saturation of meat after blooming (P < 0.01). Regardless of the level of supplementation, dietary dried citrus pulp strongly reduced meat lipid oxidation over 6 days of aerobic storage (P < 0.001), while colour parameters did not change noticeably over storage and... |

Forages rich in condensed tannins have repeatedly shown potential to reduce gastrointestinal nematode infection in sheep. Similarly, several breeds of sheep have shown a relative resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). We hypothesised that additive or even synergic effects may arise from the combination of a relatively resistant breed and a diet rich in condensed tannins. In study I, 160 lambs of the native Red Engadine Sheep (RES) and 113 lambs of the Swiss White Alpine sheep (SWA) were artificially infected with GIN and subsequently grazed for 52 days. The lambs were then distributed to 2 groups for a 14-day experimental feeding period. One group received a diet with a proportion of 55% sainfoin and was compared to a control group on the basis of... |
