The Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming (DARCOF) was established in 1995 as a so-called "centre without walls" where the actual research is performed in interdisciplinary collaboration between the participating research groups. The remit of DARCOF is to coordinate research for organic farming, with a view to achieving optimum benefit from the allocated resources. Its aim is to elucidate the ideas and problems faced in organic farming through the promotion of high quality research of international stan-dard. |

An analysis is made of the differences between the EU regulation 2092/91 and se-lected organic standards as well as national governmental rules as part of an EU-funded research project on the revision of this regulation. The results show that many differences have specific justifications, influenced by specific national or regional circumstances or policies. The possible impacts/conflicts of the differences on con-sumer/public perception, trade and on the organic farming principles are explored. Main potentials for harmonisation, simplification and regionalisation of the EU regula-tion for organic food and farming are identified in the following areas: labelling, seeds, fertilising, pest and disease control, wild plants, animal feed, processing,... |

Ecological justice is a challenging concept in relation to the current development of agriculture, because it positions social and ecological interests against market liberalism and economic growth. Ecological justice concerns fairness with regard to the common environment based on the idea that environments are fundamen-tally shared. This chapter investigates the role that ecological justice may have in relation to the global challenges of organic agriculture. We perform a philoso-phical analysis of the ethics of ecological justice and the relation to sustainability and globalization. On this basis, we discuss the challenges that this important concept poses to organic agriculture and how it can be put into organic practice. Organic agriculture is in an... |

"Biological agriculture" is a synonym for organic farming, but the term was developed independently from ‘biological control’. Therefore, it cannot be taken for granted that all methods of biological control are acceptable or even a first choice in organic farming. In this chapter, we explore the attitude of organic farming towards methods of biological control. Although organic farming has become popular during the last decade, organic farms are still a minority in all countries. Furthermore there is a lack of profound knowledge about the regulatory framework for organic farming (i.e. public regulations and private standards). Therefore, we will firstly give a brief introduction to organic farming. |

This paper explores the potential of utilising robust crops and livestock for improving sustainability of agriculture. Two approaches for dealing with unwanted fluctuations that may influence agricultural production, such as diseases and pests, are discussed. The prevailing approach, which we call the ‘Control Model’, is to protect crops and livestock from disturbances as much as possible, to regain balance with monitoring and intervention and to look for add-on solutions only. There are a number of problems associated with the Control Model, including reduced animal welfare, environmental pollution and low public support. An alternative approach, which we call the ‘Adaptation Model’, is based on reducing the consequences of disturbances rather than taking... |

The rapid development of the organic sector, and the ever increasing demand for organic products have resulted in new challenges for the organic guarantee system. It has also meant that an adequate response along the whole supply chain is required. Acknowledging that this is an important issue, representatives of the trade, certification bodies operating in the international sector and a few authorities met in May 2007 at the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) in Bonn, Germany, to discuss the matter. |
